Wizards fire Saunders

Flip Saunders (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The Washington Wizards have fired head coach Flip Saunders. The news should come as absolutely no surprise whatsoever.

The Wizards are 2-15, and have the worst record in the National Basketball Association. The club replaced him with assistant coach Randy Wittman.

Wittman has head coaching experience in the past with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves. However, he was never successful in the position of power, as he went 100-207 at the helm.

The Wizards were expected to be much better this season, led by sophomore John Wall, who was the NBA’s first overall draft pick in 2010. Wall leads the team with 16.2 points per game and 7.2 assists per game, but they’re not getting a lot of help from everyone else except for Nick Young. I think the team was expecting a lot more when they acquired Rashard Lewis for Gilbert Arenas over a year ago. Lewis is only averaging 8.7 points per game.

Targeting Harrison?

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison is feeling a tad bit paranoid these days, $125,000 later, as the fines handed down by the league continue to add up.

This week Harrison came out and said that he believes he is being unfairly targeted when it comes to supplementary discipline and his teammates seem to agree. It must be frustrating for him to see former Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniel fined $50,000 for his role in a videotape scandal, and two guys fined $25,000 each for an on-field fist fight – all the while, Harrison gets slapped with a $75,000 fine for a hit that wasn’t even penalized on the field!

Adding another interesting wrinkle to this story is the fact that the Steelers are now claiming that Harrison was again targeted this past weekend…this time by the Baltimore Ravens! (more…)

Weekend Sports Preview December 4-5

Troy Polamalu (Karen Blaha,Wikimedia Commons)

This is the time where the National Football League takes center stage with my sports viewing. Please take a look at my weekend picks for Week 13.

If you like defense, there is no better game out there on the weekend than the Sunday Nighter– the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Baltimore Ravens.

Both teams rank among the top five in the National Football League in fewest points allowed. Pittsburgh is led by Troy Polamalu and Baltimore is led by Ray Lewis. The game could go a long way to who will win the AFC North. Both teams are currently at the top of the division at 8-3. The game can be seen at 6pm on Sunday night on NBC.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Andrea Bargnani (Wikimedia Commons)

I watched the Toronto Raptors for the first time this year last night and it didn’t take me long to realize why this team is now 2-9. They just simply lack that difference maker. That player that can be counted on at the offensive side of the floor. What the Raptors have right now are a good mixture of role players, but no superstar that can be counted on to score twenty points per game. There are currently 23 players in the NBA that average 20+ points per game, and none of them play for Toronto.

There’s no question that the Raptors are missing Chris Bosh. But it’s now time for Andrea Bargnani to step up. He’s now in his fifth year in the NBA, and there’s no excuses why he can’t get it done. Last night Toronto’s 109-94 loss in Washington, Bargnani was a dismal -17. Simply not good enough for someone at 7’0″, 250 pounds,  that is expected to get it done on both ends of the court more consistently.
