Alexander Ovechkin (Wikimedia Commons)
Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has won the 2013 Hart Trophy. Ovechkin was the primary reason why the Capitals won the Southeast Division. Ovechkin, who also won the Maurice Richard Trophy, led the NHL with 32 goals.
Other award winners included Paul MacLean of the Ottawa Senators as the Jack Adams Trophy winner for coach of the year, Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks as the Selke Trophy winner as best defensive forward, P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens as the Norris Trophy winner for best defenceman, Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets as the Vezina Trophy winner for best goaltender, Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning as the best gentlemanly player and Jonathan Huberdeau of the Florida Panthers as the best rookie.
The 2013 NHL Awards were given secondary status this season because of the lockout situation. A ceremony would have had to take place in July, after the draft and after free agency.

Team Canada is now two victories away from winning the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship in Ufa, Russia.
On New Year’s Eve, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Edmonton Oilers led the Canadian offensive attack with three assists in an impressive 4-1 win over Russia.
Jonathan Huberdeau of the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League also had a multi-point game. Huberdeau, the Florida Panthers’ third overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and 2011 Memorial Cup MVP, registered a goal and an assist. His goal was an empty netter that sealed the victory.

If the Edmonton Oil Kings are going to win the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League’s greatest prize, goaltender Laurent Brossoit must be better.
The draft pick of the Calgary Flames gave up four goals on 33 shots in a 5-2 loss to the Saint John Sea Dogs at the Memorial Cup Monday night in Shawinigan, Quebec.

For the first time in franchise history, the Edmonton Rush are in championship game. Tonight in New York state, the Rush take on the Rochester Knighthawks for the 2012 Champion’s Cup (Shaw HD, 5:30pm).
Now I’m not a huge supporter of a team with a losing record in the regular season making the playoffs, as the Rush were 6-10 and in fourth place in the Western Division, but you have to give the team credit for getting hot at just the right time.

Team Canada got a significant amount of offense from their defense on Day Four of the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships at Rexall Place Thursday night.
Scott Harrington, Brandon Gormley and Ryan Murray all recorded multi-point games as Canada defeated Denmark 10-2. Harrington, a second round pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins out of the London Knights, recorded one goals and three assists, Gormley a first round pick of the Phoenix Coyotes out of the Moncton Wildcats, recorded two goals and one assist, and Murray of the Everett Silvertips, recorded two assists.
If there was one area of concern for Team Canada, it was their overall team discipline. They took eight minor penalties, including five that involved unnecessary stick work. Brett Connolly and Jonathan Huberdeau, two players Team Canada is counting on offensively, each took a penalty with less than five minutes left. However, even though Denmark scored on the power play, Canada got shorthanded goals from Connolly and Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants and draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens.
But the bottom line is Team Canada needs to better behaved to win the Gold medal. The schedule gets a lot tougher the rest of the way than it did tonight. Team Canada’s next game is Saturday against the United States.
In other World Junior Hockey Championship news, Michael Futa, the Director of Amateur Scouting with the Los Angeles Kings, might have just become one of the richest scouts in professional sports this week. How? Well, he won $87,000 last night in the 50/50 during Canada’s 5-0 win over the Czech Republic.

Team Canada got off to an excellent start at the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships in Edmonton and Calgary.
Mark Stone of the Brandon Wheat Kings, a draft pick of the Ottawa Senators notched a hat trick and Jonathan Huberdeau, the reigning Memorial Cup MVP, notched a goal and four assists as Canada pounded Finland by a score of 8-1.
Mark Visentin was solid in between the Canadian pipes making 24 saves on 25 shots.
The play of Stone was very impressive in this one, as twice he took passes from Huberdeau, standing behind the Finnish net and accurately placed the puck past Finnish goaltender Christopher Gibson.
Ryan Strome also was prolific offensively with a goal and three assists.
If there was one weakness Monday in Edmonton, it was the play of Oil King Mark Pysyk. The local defenceman didn’t so much in blocking the shot from Alexander Ruuttu (son of former Buffalo Sabre Christian Ruuttu) who scored Finland’s only goal, and took a dumb hooking penalty in the third period.
The Canadian team is also anxiously waiting to hear the status of Devante Smith-Pelly, who left the game in the second period after blocking a shot.
Canada next plays the Czech Republic on Wednesday night.

Quinton Howden (Wikimedia Commons)
The Team Canada roster was announced for the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships in Calgary and Edmonton on Wednesday.
Mark Pysyk, a 19 year-old defenceman for the Edmonton Oil Kings, from Sherwood Park, Alberta is the only Alberta native on the roster and only player currently playing on an Alberta based junior team . Pysyk, was Buffalo’s 1st round draft pick, 23rd overall in the 2010 draft. So far this season, he has two goals and 16 assists in 25 games played in the Western Hockey League.
Other notables are four returning players–forwards Brett Connolly, Quinton Howden and Jaden Schwartz and goaltender Mark Visentin.
Connolly is one of two players currently playing in the National Hockey League that made Team Canada. So far this season, he has four goals and four assists with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The other NHL player is Devante Smith-Pelly, who has three goals and two assists in 26 games with the Anaheim Ducks.

Ryan Murphy (Wikimedia Commons)
The Canadian National Junior team will be keeping an eye on the health of two key players with the World Junior Hockey Championships set to start in Edmonton and Calgary six weeks from now.
Forward Jonathan Huberdeau of the Saint John Sea Dogs is currently out of their lineup with a broken foot, while defenceman Ryan Murphy is currently out with a concussion.
Murphy of the Kitchener Rangers suffered a concussion on November 4 after being hit from behind by Tom Kuhnacki of the Niagara Ice Dogs. Kuhnacki was later given an amazing 20 game suspension for the incident by the Ontario Hockey League.
Huberdeau, who was drafted third overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft, has 28 points in 13 games for the Sea Dogs this season. Last year, Huberdeau helped the Sea Dogs win the Memorial Cup in Mississauga, Ontario, and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
Murphy, meanwhile, has been constantly praised by Don Cherry on Hockey Night in Canada, is considered one of hockey’s top defensive prospects. In the 2011 National Hockey League Draft, he was drafted 12th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes.

For the first time in history a team based in Atlantic Canada has won the Memorial Cup.
Sunday night the St. John Sea Dogs defeated the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors 3-1 in Mississauga’s backyard.
The 2011 Memorial Cup would be a completely different story for Calgary-raised Jacob DeSerres. Last year, DeSerres gave up nine goals in the Memorial Cup final with the Brandon Wheat Kings while playing the Windsor Spitfires. This year, he would only give up one in the championship final.
A draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers, DeSerres made 34 saves in the Championship final.
