This is sounding like a broken record, but once again Raffi Torres of the San Jose Sharks has been suspended.
This time it is for the remainder of the Western Conference semi-finals for his hit to the head of Los Angeles’ Kings forward Jarret Stoll.
Torres received a two minute minor for the infraction in game one of the series, a series in which the Sharks currently find themselves down 2-0.
A major reason that Torres was suspended for a maximum of six games is because he is a repeat offender. Torres has been suspended three times in the past for 27 games.
The 2013 World Men’s Hockey Championships will commence this weekend with Canada playing two games in Stockholm. The first will be against Denmark on Saturday (TSN, 8:00 a.m.) and the second will be against Switzerland on Sunday (TSN2, 8:00 a.m.).
There are four Oilers and one Flame on Team Canada. Jordan Eberle, Justin Schultz, Devan Dubnyk and Taylor Hall are the Oilers, while T.J. Brodie is the lone Calgary Flame.
Other notable players representing Team Canada are Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, Carolina Hurricanes sniper Eric Staal, Florida Panthers defenceman Brian Campbell (defending Lady Byng winner) and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos, who was second in the NHL in scoring with 29 goals and 57 points. Well you can say the Edmonton Oilers are taking a deep breath today. They finally beat Niklas Backstrom in Minnesota. Backstrom, who was 17-0 against the Oilers in Minnesota prior to Friday, was pulled late in the first period, after Corey Potter put the Oilers up 3-0. Edmonton then went on to win 6-1.
The Oilers won despite being outshot 39-17 by Minnesota. Their play was simply opportunistic. They registered goals on less than one third of their total shots.
Potter and Nail Yakupov scored two goals each for the Oilers, while Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall had a goal and two assists each.
Jeff Petry meanwhile might have had his best game as an Oiler, as he went a +5.
It looks more and more like the Edmonton Oilers will not make the postseason in 2013. However, there is a still a mathematical chance after their impressive 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.
The Oilers played a complete hockey game Friday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Jordan Eberle scored one goal and two assists, while Justin Schultz and Magnus Paajarvi had multi-point games.
The Oilers are now eight points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets with five games to go in the season. The next game on their schedule will be Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks (Sportsnet, 6:00 p.m.). It is basically simple. Their remaining five games, of which four are at home, are mandatory for the Oilers to win.
The Edmonton Oilers are red hot. In fact, with five straight wins, they’re the hottest team in the Northwest Division. On Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome Taylor Hall scored one goal and four assists as the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 8-2.
After believe it or not a slow start for the Oilers after Devan Dubnyk gave up two goals on the first two Flames shots to Matt Stajan, the Oilers tied the score before the end of the period and then scored three times each in the second and third period.
The Oilers, playing with a full lineup, also got two goals each from Jordan Eberle and Nail Yakupov, and a goal from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who also had three assists.
Lennart Petrell just might have scored his biggest goal as an Edmonton Oiler.
Sunday night during the third period at Rexall Place, Petrell received a pass from Sam Gagner on the two on one while Justin Schultz was in the penalty box for smothering the puck and made no mistake as he scored past Pekka Rinne, with a beautiful shorthanded marker.
For Petrell, it was his second of the season and none would have been any bigger.
With the win, the Oilers improve to 11-11-6 on the season and leapfrogged four teams in the Western Conference. They are now two points back of the San Jose Sharks for a playoff spot. The Sharks play the Anaheim Ducks tonight before playing the Oilers in a monumental game on Wednesday night.
The Edmonton Oilers got a much needed victory before they embark on a huge road trip Saturday.
Jordan Eberle scored in regulation and the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 at Rexall Place.
Teemu Hartikainen scored the game tying goal for the Oilers with 11:56 left in the third period on the power play after Keith Yandle took a tripping penalty on Ales Hemsky which should have gone to Rostislav Klesla.
With the win, the Oilers are one point back of the Los Angeles Kings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Kings defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Saturday.
The Edmonton Oilers had a record performance Saturday night in a 6-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche.
The Oilers recorded a club record 56 shots on goal against the Avalanche, breaking a record of 55 shots set on March 21, 1986. The Oilers were once down 3-0 and 4-1 in the game, but marched back scoring five unanswered goals.
If memory serves me right there was a remarkable comeback by the Oilers that night in 1986 as well. Minnesota was once up 4-1, I believe, before the Oilers marched back.
Taylor Hall had eight scoring chances, while Jordan Eberle had seven. According to Kevin Weekes of Hockey Night in Canada, the Oilers had 83 shots during the game.

Heading into Monday’s game against the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers’ head coach Ralph Krueger stressed the importance of the Oilers improving while even strength. To begin the season, the Oilers only scored four even strength goals in four games.
Well on Monday night in Edmonton, you can now make that statistic four even strength goals in five games, but I don’t think Krueger will mind too much.
The reason is that the Oilers still beat the Avalanche 4-1 and in the process scored four powerplay goals. Even though the Oilers didn’t score on even strength, they generated the necessary opportunities to put themselves into the position to have a man advantage.
We haven’t seen much resiliency and patience from the Edmonton Oilers in recent years, but give Ralph Krueger credit Sunday night in Vancouver.
The Oilers were once down 2-0 to the Vancouver Canucks last night, but simply didn’t panic. They kept on going and got timely goals from Jordan Eberle and Ales Hemsky in a 3-2 shootout win.
Sure, there were defensive breakdowns that led to the two Vancouver goals from Alexander Edler and Zack Kassian, but Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk is starting to show great maturity in between the pipes. Dubnyk was sensational in the shootout and just seems more confident in his fourth year with the Oilers.
