Junior Seau (J.J. Hall, Wikimedia Commons)

One of the best NFL linebackers of all-time is dead.

On Wednesday, according to TMZ, Junior Seau committed suicide at his home in Oceanside, California.

Seau played in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers, New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins from 1990-2009.

A 12-time Pro Bowler, Seau was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1992, and was on the NFL’s all-decade team in the 1990s.

He had 1849 tackles, 57 sacks, 18 interceptions, three fumbles and 21 pass deflections.

In 2006, Seau retired with the San Diego Chargers and had an emotional press conference, only to come out of retirement and sign a contract with the New England Patriots four days later.

Another interesting part of his Seau’s life is that he set up the Junior Seau Foundation in 1992 to help children with drug and alcohol awareness and educational programs to help prevent juvenile delinquency.

Seau is survived by two sons and a daughter.  Seau’s death today also reminded me of another outstanding NFL linebacker who was taken from us too soon. Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles also died at the age of 43 in 2004. White passed away at the time of cardiac arrhythmia.
