One thing was clear on Thursday night at the 2013 NFL Draft in New York City. General managers were not afraid to draft offensive linemen in the first round.
A total of nine offensive linemen were drafted in the first round on Thursday, including three of the first four picks.
With the first overall pick, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted offensive tackle Eric Fisher from Central Michigan. What is interesting about Fisher is that he was the second smallest of all first round offensive lineman taken at 297 pounds. The pick was surprising because Central Michigan participates in the lesser known Mid-American Conference.

Andy Reid (Moses Ross, Wikimedia Commons)
Andy Reid was only out of work as a head coach in the National Football League for three full days.
On Friday, Reid signed a five year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.
I guess the Chiefs are getting an improvement. Reid was 4-12 while coaching the Philadelphia Eagles during the regular season, while the Chiefs were 2-14 this year.
However, the 4-12 record Reid posted this last year, was by far Red’s worst. In 14 years as Philadelphia’s head coach, Reid went 130-93-1 and made the playoffs nine times.
Kansas City also announced that they have parted ways with general manager Scott Pioli.
Pioli will probably get a fresh start somewhere else after witnessing linebacker Jovan Belcher commit suicide on December 1.

After Cincinnati’s win over Philadelphia Thursday, I’m now 129-79-1 on the season. Here are the rest of my picks:
11am
Atlanta over NY Giants–The Falcons win a tight, high scoring game at home.
Green Bay over Chicago–I don’t like the Bears offense much.
Cleveland over Washington–No RG3, no win for the Skins.
St. Louis over Minnesota–I really like what the Rams have been doing as of late.
Jacksonville over Miami–The Jags aren’t as bad as their record indicates.
New Orleans over Tampa Bay–The Buccaneers struggle to contain Drew Brees.
Denver over Baltimore–Too much turmoil in Baltimore at the moment.

Jay Cutler (Mike Shadle, Wikimedia Commons)
An 11-5 record and an impressive performance by the Atlanta Falcons defense on Thursday has put me at 109-67-1 for the season heading into Sunday’s week 13 games.
Here are the rest of my week 13 picks:
11am
Buffalo over Jacksonville–I know the Bills’ defense is horrible, but so is Jacksonville’s. Buffalo wins a tight one at home.
Chicago over Seattle–The Bears are back on offense with Cutler at quarterback, which poses problems for the Seahawks.
Detroit over Indianapolis–In an exciting game, the Lions have played very well recently in losses to Green Bay and Houston. Another tough opponent this week, but the Colts will lose a close one on the road.
Green Bay over Minnesota–The Vikings aren’t playing as good of football now compared to the beginning of the season.

Jovan Belcher (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)
According to the Associated Press, Kansas City Chiefs’ linebacker Jovan Belcher was involved in a murder suicide on Saturday.
Belcher was reportedly arguing with his girlfriend Saturday morning before shooting her. He then allegedly drove to Chiefs’ practice complex, and thanked Chiefs’ General Manager Scott Pioli and Head Coach Romeo Crennel, before committing suicide.
Belcher and his girlfriend Kassandra Perkins, leave behind a three month old daughter.
Belcher was in his fourth year as the Chiefs’ linebacker. Undrafted, Belcher signed with the Chiefs in 2009 and had 193 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.
It appears the Chiefs home game against the Carolina Panthers will be played tomorrow in Kansas City despite the tragedy. Do you agree or do you think the National Football League should have a period of grief so the Chiefs can be ready to play from a mental standpoint?

Grey Cup (Roland Tanglao, Wikimedia Commons)
In one of the biggest sporting events of the year, the 100th Grey Cup takes place Sunday in Toronto. The 12-6 Calgary Stampeders face the 9-9 Toronto Argonauts.
The game will have the two finalists for the 2012 Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player award. On Thursday we learned that Argonauts’ wide receiver Chad Owens, who set a CFL record for most all-purpose yards in one season, had more votes than Calgary Stampeder running back Jon Cornish.
This is the third time the Stampeders are facing the Argonauts for the Grey Cup, and 2012 is drastically different compared to 1971 and 1991 when the Argonauts entered the game as the heavy favourite and entered the game as a team the rest of the Canadian Football League were adamantly not pulling for. That tendency isn’t here this time around, and if you go by one Calgary player’s undisciplined actions prior to the Western Final, many football fans nationwide are tempted to cheer for Ricky Ray, Jim Barker and the Argonauts.
The Grey Cup will take place Sunday at 4pm on TSN.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

We now know what the National Football League playoff picture looks like.
With their 31-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys this evening, the New York Giants have won the NFC East. Wide receiver Victor Cruz, who should be going to the Pro Bowl, but got completely snubbed by reporters because they had to get their ballot BEFORE the regular season ended, had a remarkable 178 yards receiving. With the win, the Giants now host the Atlanta Falcons in one NFC Wildcard matchup.
The other NFC Wildcard matchup will have the New Orleans Saints hosting the Detroit Lions. The Saints beat the Lions 31-17 on December 4 in New Orleans. The Saints were an offensive machine at home. They scored 40+ points in five of eight home games, including a 62 point performance in week 7.
In the AFC, the Denver Broncos are hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers in one AFC Wildcard matchup. Today, the Broncos lost 7-3 to the Kansas City Chiefs, but clinched first in the AFC West after the San Diego Chargers defeated the Oakland Raiders 38-26 on three touchdown passes by Philip Rivers.
The Cincinnati Bengals clinched the sixth seed in the AFC, when Denver lost to Kansas City. The Bengals will now play the Houston Texans next week.
The top two seeds go to New England and Baltimore in the AFC and Green Bay and San Francisco in the NFC.

What was supposed to be one of the biggest hockey games in quite sometime for the city of Edmonton, in actuality has no meaning whatsoever at all. When Team Canada faces Team United States at Rexall Place tonight (TSN, 6pm) the Canadians know they will be going directly to the semi-finals of the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship, while the Americans are going to the relegation round.
Still, there are a couple of important factors that will come into play. First, it is important that Canada doesn’t get into any bad habits. Team Canada has been a little bit undisciplined at times through their first three games and it is important the team carries their momentum they have now into Tuesday by playing a complete sixty minutes after deciding to take parts of the third period off against Denmark Thursday night.

Tony Sparano (Chris J. Nelson, Wikimedia Commons)
It was a black Monday for three professional sports coaches.
Terry Murray of the Los Angeles Kings, Todd Haley of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tony Sparano of the Miami Dolphins all lost their jobs.
Murray, is only 13-12-4 with the Kings this season in the NHL, only good enough for 12th in the Western Conference. With the signing of Mike Richards in the off-season, expectations were significantly higher for Los Angeles. But Richards went out with a concussion, Drew Doughty has not played up to expectations, and after four consecutive losses, the Kings are on the outside looking in.
Murray is being replaced by John Stevens, who was the Kings’ assistant coach and has head coaching experience with the Philadelphia Flyers. He went 120-109-34 from 2006-2010.
In the NFL meanwhile, Romeo Crennel is taking over the coaching duties from Haley in Kansas City. Despite winning the AFC West a year ago, the Chiefs were last in the AFC West this year at 5-8. Crennel, the team’s defensive co-ordinator, has head coaching experience with the Cleveland Browns from 2005-08, where he went 24-40. The Chiefs, like the Kings, have had injury issues this season. Star quarterback Matt Cassel is out for the season with a hand injury, and backup Kyle Orton dislocated the finger on his throwing hand last week.
Also, Todd Bowles is taking over the head coaching duties from Tony Sparano in Miami. I will miss Sparano, because professional sports needs more head coaches with the excitement and enthusiasm that Sparano brought to football. Bowles had been the secondary coach for the Dolphins this season, a team that was 4-9, and last in the AFC East. Bowles has no prior head coaching experience.

Anthony Calvillo (Ryan Remiorz, Canadian Press)
It appears Anthony Calvillo will play one final season in the Canadian Football League for the Montreal Alouettes.
On Monday, Calvillo, who is 39 years of age, made the decision to play one more season.
Calvillo is the all-time leader in CFL passing yards, touchdown passes and career completions for a quarterback. The four-time CFL All-Star is also a three-time recipient of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award and three-time Grey Cup champion.
There was substantial speculation that Calvillo would retire at the end of last season, after his Montreal Alouettes lost a dramatic thriller in overtime in the Eastern Semi-Final to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. But the veteran quarterback who has also spent time with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Las Vegas Posse, still feels he still has some more football left in him.
Staying with the Alouettes’ theme, it was interesting to watch former Alouette Tyler Palko record his first win as an NFL quarterback Sunday as Kansas City defeated Chicago 10-3. Palko made 17 completions in 30 attempts for 157 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown pass to Dexter McCluster was of the Hail Mary variety that put the Chiefs up by four points at the end of the first half. If you don’t remember him on the Alouettes’ active roster for three weeks in November in 2009, that’s ok because neither do I. He didn’t see any action because a guy by the name of Anthony Calvillo was leading the Alouettes to a dramatic Grey Cup victory.

The 99th Grey Cup gets under way tomorrow at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver with a game between the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (TSN, 4:30pm).
The Lions are trying to become the first team since 1994 to win the Grey Cup on home soil. But they will have a lot of Edmonton Eskimo fans cheering against them after head coach Wally Buono’s ridiculous comment last week of “I hate Edmonton.”
The Lions have the Grey Cup MVP in Travis Lulay, while the Blue Bombers’ have the league’s top defensive player in Jovon Johnson.
There have been some interesting storylines heading into the Grey Cup. Blue Bombers’ defensive end Odelle Willis tweeted this past week how he wanted to go home to American Thanksgiving rather than practicing on Thursday, and said “a couple of more days and I’m out of this hoe.”
Also, hall of famers, Angelo Mosca and Joe Kapp got into a fight at an alumni luncheon in Vancouver after the two discussed a play in 1963 when Mosca’s hit knocked Lions’ running back Willie Fleming out of the game.
Getting back to the Blue Bombers and Lions, the Blue Bombers beat the Lions twice this year, 25-20 on July 28 in Winnipeg and 30-17 on August 13 in Vancouver.

Kyle Orton (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)
The Kansas City Chiefs believe they are still in contention in the AFC West. On Wednesday, they signed Kyle Orton off waivers from the Denver Broncos, who decided to go with Tim Tebow at the quarterback position instead.
The Chiefs (4-6) were looking for a quarterback after Matt Cassel broke his hand and then realized first hand that former Montreal Alouette Tyler Palko was not the answer after a poor performance against the New England Patriots Monday night in a 34-3 loss.
Another team that might have shown some interest in Orton were the Chicago Bears who lost Jay Cutler with a broken thumb. Cutler, another former Bronco quarterback, might be back for the playoffs however, and don’t forget the Bears have had Orton before.
On Sunday, the most impressive performance came from Ravens’ wide receiver Torrey Smith who had 165 yards receiving in Baltimore’s 31-24 win over Cincinnati. We’ve been talking for years how good the Ravens’ defense is, but lately, the offense deserves some praise as well. The Ravens have scored 30+ points in five games so far. One could say, these aren’t your daddy’s Ravens anymore. Baltimore improved to 7-3, while Cincinnati dropped top 6-4.
In the other high profile matchup, the Atlanta Falcons defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-17. Quarterback Matt Ryan threw for 316 yards, including 147 yards to Roddy White, and Michael Turner, who continues to be under the radar, ran for 100 yards. The Falcons deserve higher praise than they receive, and are a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Atlanta improved to 6-4, while Tennessee dropped to 5-5.

Knowshon Moreno (Jeffrey Beall, Wikimedia Commons)
The AFC West just got significantly more interesting on Monday when it was announced that two key players within the division will miss the rest of the season due to injuries.
The Denver Broncos have announced that running back Knowshon Moreno is out for the year with a torn ACL and that Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Matt Cassel is out for the year with a hand injury. Both injuries occurred in Denver’s 17-10 win over Kansas City on Sunday.
The upset of the week came in Philadelphia, as it appears the Eagles’ season is finally over at 3-6. On Sunday, Cardinals’ quarterback Jon Skelton threw three outstanding touchdown passes–two to Larry Fitzgerald and one to Early Doucet in the 21-17 victory.
There were also five very interesting games yesterday.
The New Orleans Saints defeated the Atlanta Falcons 26-23 in overtime. Falcons’ head coach Mike Smith is getting criticized for gambling on fourth and one and the Falcons having the ball on their own 29 yard line. I suggest the criticism is utter nonsense. Michael Turner is one of the best running backs in the game today and was just stopped by the Saints’ defense. New Orleans was probably going to score anyways because of the ridiculous NFL overtime rules! With the win, New Orleans takes a stranglehold in the NFC South at 7-3, while Atlanta falls to 5-4.

Matt Moore (Greg Keene, Wikimedia Commons)
The biggest surprise from the weekend came from the Miami Dolphins who absolutely hammered the Kansas City Chiefs 31-3. I don’t think anybody who follows the NFL expected a tropical Florida crush in the heart of Missouri, especially after the Chiefs were impressive the previous week in defeating the San Diego Chargers 23-20 in overtime. Quarterback Matt Moore had his finest game of the season, as he threw for three touchdown passes, 244 yards and a quarterback rating of 147.5.
The Dolphins won their first game of the year (1-7), and with all of the talk that Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden taking over from Tony Sparano, it looks like Sparano has saved his job for another week. The Chiefs meanwhile fell to 4-4.
But week nine was about the marquee matchups.
If you liked offense, the Green Bay Packers continued their unbeaten run (8-0) in defeating the San Diego Chargers 45-38, in a game where both teams combined for 83 points. Aaron Rodgers had four touchdowns, and threw for 247 yards, including 105 to Jordy Nelson. Even though Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (4-4) had four touchdowns himself and 385 yards passing, he had three interceptions to Rodgers’ zero.
There were also some very interesting defensive battles Sunday.
