Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The biggest story heading into Saturday is Tiger Woods. According to CBS there was a possibility that Woods would be disqualified heading into the third round of the Masters (Saturday, CBS, 1:00 p.m.) for dropping his ball in an illegal area after his approach shot on the 15th hole hit the flag stick and went into the water. Woods apparently dropped his ball two yards back from where he should have dropped it.
However, according to ESPN, Woods was only given a two stroke penalty after officials reviewed the tape. Do you think Woods was given preferential treatment by officials because of his status or is a two-stroke penalty considered harsh enough? Please comment at www.anysportanytime.ca. One thing is for sure, and that is a major golf tournament with Tiger Woods boosts television ratings significantly more than a major golf tournament without him.

John Gibbons (Wikimedia Commons)
The Toronto Blue Jays have gone back to the future in hiring their manager for the 2012 season. On Tuesday, Blue Jays General Manager Alex Anthopoulos shocked the world by hiring John Gibbons as the team’s next manager.
Remember him? Gibbons managed the Blue Jays from 2004 to 2008 and posted a record of 305-305.
My initial reaction is this. Why isn’t the team starting fresh? Why have they decided to return with a guy who is ordinary?
Gibbons is obviously excited. Since being fired from Toronto four years ago, he has managed the San Antonio Missions in the AA Texas League and been the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals.
Gibbons was not on anybody’s radar but did fit the credentials for a manager Anthopoulos was looking for– someone with major league experience he was familiar with.
Finally thumbs up to hall of famer Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, who wrote two days ago that Toronto would hire a manager, but his name would not be Jim Tracy or Jim Riggleman, the two weekend favourites for the vacancy.

John Farrell (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The Toronto Blue Jays have traded manager John Farrell and pitcher David Carpenter to the Boston Red Sox for shortstop Mike Aviles.
The fact that Farrell was sent to Boston should come as no surprise because the Red Sox really wanted him to replace Bobby Valentine and the gong show environment that has occurred lately in New England.
Last season Aviles batted .250 with 13 home runs and 60 runs batted in. He also has major league experience with the Kansas City Royals.
It will be interesting to see if Aviles will be replacing Yunel Escobar at shortstop. Escobar seems to have fallen out of the Blue Jays mix after putting a racist slur on his eye black for a game. Escobar was later suspended three games.

Mariano Rivera (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The New York Yankees received a major blow on Friday when they received the news that Mariano Rivera, possibly the greatest closer in the history of the game, will be out for the rest of the season ater tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament last night.
So how did Rivera tear his ACL? Well, in practice. That’s right. Rivera tore his ACL while catching a fly ball in batting practice prior to the New York Yankees 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.
That is why players should possibly listen to NBA great Allen Iverson, and simply not practice.
The good news for Yankees fans however is that Rivera, who has a career record 608 saves, plans to return in 2013 at the age of 43. The bad news is that this doesn’t help me at all in my fantasy baseball pool, where I have had to drop Rivera in favour of Chris Perez of the Cleveland Indians!

Phil Humber (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
History was made in the baseball world on Saturday afternoon in Seattle, as Phil Humber of the Chicago White Sox became the 21st player in Major League Baseall history to deliver a perfect game.
Humber, who had Tommy John surgery, prior to playing in the Major Leagues, struck out nine as Chicago beat Seattle 4-0. There were no perfect games last year. Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies was the last pitcher to throw a perfect game in 2010.
Humber was a very unsuspecting pitcher to throw a perfect game. Last year he went 9-9 with a 3.75 earned run average. He also had the privilege to throw in front of a national television audience on FOX.
In other baseball news, the Toronto Blue Jays might be slow out of the gate at 8-6 but they were ale to deliver some defensive magic Friday night. For the first time since 1979, the Blue Jays turned a triple play in a 4-3 win over Kansas City.
The Blue Jays are 8-6 after their 9-5 win over Kansas City Saturday. Even though all-star Jose Bautista is only hitting .200, the team is only half a game back of the New York Yankees in the American League East.

World Series Trophy (Matthew Sheppard, Wikimedia Commons)
Tonight is literally one of the greatest nights in sports. It’s Game 7. Winner takes all. For some reason, Game 7 of the World Series and Stanley Cup means more than Game 7 of the NBA Finals. But tonight either the St. Louis Cardinals or Texas Rangers will come away with a Championship.
I thought it would be a good time to take a look back in Major League Baseball online archives and look back at the previous game sevens in World Series history.
1909– Pittsburgh Pirates def. Detroit Tigers– Honus Wagner collected six stolen bases and six runs batted in during the Series. Pirates’ starting pitcher Babe Adams won three of the World Series Games, including game seven, where he threw a six hitter as Pittsburgh won 8-0. The Pirates won the 1909 World Series despite poor defense. They committed 12 errors in seven games.
1924–Washington Senators def. New York Giants–The Giants played in a record fourth consecutive World Series. In game seven, and the score 3-3 in the 12th inning, Giants third baseman Freddie Lidstrom had the ball go over his head and allowed Muddy Ruel to score the winning run. Washington won 4-3.
1925–Pittsburgh Pirates def. Washington Senators–In their first World Series win since 1909, the Pirates outslugged the Senators 9-7 in the deciding game. Played in pouring rain, this Game 7 was considered by many as the worst conditions ever for any World Series game. According to www.baseballlibrary.com, there are rumors that Kiki Cuyler’s game winning two run double in the eighth inning was foul, but the umpires couldn’t see it properly because of the heavy fog. Cuyler would later be inducted into Cooperstown in 1968. The Pirates also were the first team in baseball history to come back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series.

Mark Teixeira (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
Records in baseball are few and far between because of the rich history of Major League Baseball dating back to 1869.
But on Tuesday night, New York Yankees’ first baseman Mark Teixeira got into the record books and is now all alone in first place.
Teixeira hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same game for a record twelfth time in Major League Baseball history as the New York Yankees shut out the Chicago White Sox 6-0.
He passes long time switch hitter Eddie Murray (who played eleven seasons with the Baltimore Orioles in his 20 year career) and Chilli Davis who played the majority of his career with the San Francisco Giants and California Angels.
In other baseball news, Canadian Matt Stairs of Saint John, New Brunswick has decided to retire after a 19 year career that started in 1992 with the Montreal Expos. Over time, Stairs was known as one of the best pinch hitters the game has ever seen. His 23 pinch hit home runs is a Major League Baseball record. Since starting with the Expos, Stairs has been a Major League Baseball journeyman, having also played with the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres and Washington Nationals. In 2008, he won a World Series with the Phillies, and hit a key home run against the Los Angeles Dodgers in game four of the National League Championship Series.

Colby Rasmus (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
With the Toronto Blue Jays thirteen games back of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East, it came as absolutely no surprise to me that Blue Jays’ General Manager Alex Anthopoulos made blockbuster deals today.
First, Anthopoulos traded reliever Jason Frasor and pitching prospect Zach Stewart to the Chicago White Sox for Canadian third baseman Mark Teahen and starting pitcher Edwin Jackson.
The Blue Jays then shipped Jackson, outfielder Corey Patterson, pitcher Mark Rzepczynski and possible closer Octavio Dotel to the St. Louis Cardinals for outfielder Colby Rasmus, and pitchers P.J. Walters, and former Blue Jays Brian Tallet and Trever Miller.
Rasmus is the best player the Blue Jays are receiving in the deal. He is batting .246 with 11 home runs and 40 runs batted in after hitting .276 with 23 home runs and 66 runs batted in during 2010. He became expendable a little bit in St. Louis’ lineup who has seen great seasons from Jon Jay, Matt Holliday and Lance Berkman.
Teahen, has represented Canada at the World Baseball Classic because his father is from St. Mary’s, Ontario, is struggling significantly offensively (.203, 3 HR, 11 RBIs) with the White Sox this year, and will probably be used in a backup utility role coming off the bench when needed. Teahen, is very versatile, as he has Major League experience through the infield and outfield.

Corey Patterson (Otto Gruele Jr., Getty Images)
The Toronto Blue Jays got back to the .500 mark Saturday thanks to a 9-8 victory over the Chicago White Sox in a game that lasted 14 innings.
Designated hitter Corey Patterson went five for seven Saturday and got the game winning home run off of White Sox starting pitcher Gavin Floyd, who was making his first relief appearance since 2007.
Jose Bautista also homered for the Blue Jays, his 20th of the year, back in the first inning.
The Blue Jays got an excellent relief appearance from rookie Luis Perez, who won his first game in the Major Leagues.
Perez, who was playing in his sixth career game, lowered his earned run average from 5.87 to 3.97 after throwing three and two third innings with no earned runs.
Toronto improved to 26-26 and are 3.5 games back of the American League East Division leading Boston Red Sox. The White Sox meanwhile dropped to 24-30.

Harmon Killebrew (Wikimedia Commons)
According to the Associated Press, the most famous Minnesota Twin in franchise history, passed away today at the age of 74.
Harmon Killebrew, who had 573 home runs (11th all-time), and 1,584 runs batted in over a 21 year career with the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals died of esophageal cancer.
In 1969, Killebrew won the American League Most Valuable Player Award after setting Twins’ team records for most home runs in a season (49), runs batted in (140) and walks (145).
Killebrew is also known for hitting the longest home run in the history of Met Stadium in Minnesota (where the Twins play) not New York, (home of the Mets). He accomplished that feat on June 3, 1967 when he hit a home run that went 500 feet.
A first baseman, third baseman and left fielder, Killebrew was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1984.

When one takes a look at the Major League Baseball standings this morning, they’ll find the Toronto Blue Jays with the longest winning streak in baseball.
Last night in Detroit, the Blue Jays scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Detroit Tigers 4-2. The win snapped the Tigers’ seven game winning streak and extended the Blue Jays’ streak to six games, the current highest streak in Major League Baseball.

NHL to MMA
Remember Donald Brashear?
If you thought his departure from the NHL last season meant you’d heard the last of him, think again! The 39-year-old is currently plying his trade in the Ligue Nord-Americain de Hockey, a senior league in Quebec full of guys who like to shed the mitts, after wrapping up a big league career that started back in 1993.
When he’s not bulging the twine and throwing bombs with Riviere-du-Loup 3L (he had 17 goals in 28 games this season!), the six-foot-three, 237-pound Brashear is training and preparing for his debut on the Mixed Martial Arts scene! That’s right, fighting without the skates!
Quebec’s Ringside MMA announced this week that Brashear will face 27-year-old Martin Trempe, who used to play hockey himself, on June 4th at the Pepsi Colisee. (After the jump: More on the fight, plus an intro to “Floorball” starring TJ Foster of the Edmonton Oil Kings) (more…)

Despite being considered by many as a middle to low market team, the Minnesota Twins have found ways to increase their overall revenue so they can contend on an annual basis. They moved into a brand new ball park, Target Field, and now have the thirteenth highest payroll in baseball.
The biggest question mark for the AL Central Champion Twins will come from first baseman Justin Morneau of New Westminster, British Columbia and closer Joe Nathan. The 2006 American League MVP had a Major League leading .437 on base percentage and an American League leading .345 batting average (at the time of his injury) when he suffered a season ending concussion after colliding with Toronto Blue Jays’s shortstop John McDonald at second base. If Morneau can rebound and put his concussion problems behind him, he will be a huge force in the Twins lineup. Nathan meanwhile, is one of the best closers in the game, but missed the 2010 season with Tommy John Surgery. The four time all-star has the Twins’ single season save record with 47.

Mamma Messi
We’re going to start off this week talking about birthdays – with all the media attention given to Wayne Gretzky turning 50, you’ve probably had enough of “birthday” storylines, but I’ve got an important question to ask all of you:
What did you get your Mom for her last birthday?
The reason I ask is that there is literally no way it was as awesome as what two-time FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi got for his Mom! When she turned x years old last weekend, her superstar son got her a La Liga goal!
Moments after beating Racing Santander goalie Toño on a 33rd minute penalty kick attempt, the Barcelona striker lifted up his jersey to show off the message he had written on his undershirt before the game: “Feliz Cumple Mami!” (Video after the jump!) (more…)
