Grey Cup (Roland Tanglao, Wikimedia Commons)
The Toronto Argonauts and the Calgary Stampeders will meet in the 100th Grey Cup a week from today at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
On Sunday, three Toronto Argonauts had outstanding offensive performances in a 27-20 win over the Montreal Alouettes. Ricky Ray passed for 399 yards, Chad Kackert had 139 rushing yards and wide receiver Chad Owens had 207 receiving yards.
Toronto bounced back after a 17-10 halftime deficit and an inability to score any points on a second quarter drive where they were first and goal at Montreal’s one yard line.
The Stampeders meanwhile beat the B.C. Lions 34-29 in equally an impressive offensve performance. Quarterback Kevin Glenn, who will be starting in his first career Grey Cup game, threw for 303 yards. Running back Jon Cornish ran for 112 yards and wide receiver Maurice Price had 117 yards receiving.
A major reason for Calgary’s success was because Glenn was able to connect with Marquay McDaniel for a 68 yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and Romby Bryant for a 57 yard pass in the third quarter.

Calgary Stampeders’ quarterback Drew Tate is out for the season surprisingly and will not participate in Calgary’s game against the British Columbia Lions for Sunday’s Western Final.
Tate showed up to practice Thursday with a cast and the diagnosis is a fractured right forearm. It is not known when the injury exactly took place.
Tate led the Calgary Stampeders to a 36-30 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday. He threw a 68 yard touchdown pass to Romby Bryant with 39 seconds left to give Calgary the impressive come from behind victory. He was also named the CFL’s offensive player of the week for the divisional semi-finals.

The Calgary Stampeders are headed to the postseason.
On Saturday, Kevin Glenn threw for two touchdowns and had 286 yards passing in a 32-21 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
With the win, the Stampeders improve to 9-6 and cannot be caught by the 5-10 Hamilton Tiger-Cats, meaning they are guaranteed at least a cross-over into the Eastern Division.
A major reason for the Calgary win was simply turnovers. Winnipeg turned the football over seven times, including four interceptions by quarterback Joey Elliott.

The Calgary Stampeders beat the Edmonton Eskimos 31-30 in your prototypical Labour Day Classic at McMahon Stadium Monday.
Eskimos place kicker Grant Shaw missed a 48 yard field goal on the final play of the game. The kick was returned by Stampeders kick returner Larry Taylor out of the end zone which preserved the two points for Calgary in the western division standings.
With the win, Calgary and Edmonton are both at 5-4 and are tied for second place, but the Stampeders have the tie-breaker with their win today. (more…)

The Calgary Stampeders have moved back to the .500 mark in the CFL’s Western Division.
On Saturday afternoon, according to TSN, Jon Cornish ran for 159 yards on 24 carries as the Calgary Stampeders defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 17-10 to move to 4-4 and in sole possession of third place in the division.
Wide receiver Joe West also had an impact for Calgary. Playing in his very first football game, West scored a touchdown on his very first pass reception. He would end the day leading the Stampeders with five receptions for 68 yards.

Calgary Stampeders’ running back Jon Cornish stepped up with a key game Thursday night at Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium.
After being in the negative category in rushing yards in his last game (-1), and criticizing his offensive line, Cornish was much better last night as he rushed for 170 yards in a 31-20 Calgary win over Hamilton.
With the win, the Stampeders improve to 3-3 while Hamilton fell to 3-3. Just how close is the East at the moment? Hamilton, the Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes are all tied for first place with similar .500 records.
This was the first time the Stampeders played the Tiger-Cats since the two teams made their famous offseason blockbuster deal that saw quarterback Henry Burris traded from Calgary to Hamilton for quarterback Kevin Glenn and offensive lineman Mark Dewit. Ironically both teams came out sluggish and did not score in the first quarter.
The Stampeders dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tiger-Cats 14-0 on an eight yard touchdown run by Romby Bryant and an eight yard touchdown pass from Glenn to Nik Lewis.

The Calgary Stampeders are back at the .500 mark in the CFL’s western division.
Thursday night at McMahon Stadium, wide receiver Nik Lewis had the hat trick, as he caught three touchdown passes as the Stampeders rallied for a 41-38 overtime win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Lewis caught seven passes for 98 yards.
The Stampeders were once down 35-18 in the fourth quarter, but turned things around thanks to a touchdown pass from Kevin Glenn to Lewis followed by an immediate interception by Malik Jackson which set up another touchdown to Larry Taylor.
Then down by only a field goal, Rene Paredes tied the game on the final play of regulation.
The Stampeders had great defense in overtime as they sacked Darian Durant, and forced the Roughriders to kick long field goal in their possession. The Stampeders meanwhile got a touchdown pass from Glenn to Lewis that won Calgary the game.
The Stampeders improve to 2-2 while the Roughriders drop to 3-1.
For Calgary to compete for first in the west, they will need to be better disciplined. They took too many penalties. Offensive lineman Dimitri Tsoumpas was ejected for hitting a Roughrider in the face.
The Stampeders grade this week is a B+ (an A on offence, and a C+ on defense).

On Sunday, the Calgary Stampeders received the news that quarterback Drew Tate has opted for surgery on his non-throwing shoulder and will be out for the next four months.
Tate injured his shoulder in the Stampeders’ loss to the Toronto Argonauts on July 7 at Toronto’s Rogers Centre.
When most teams lose their top quarterback, there is some genuine reason for concern, however Stampeders General Manager John Hufnagel needs to be given some credit for acquiring Kevin Glenn from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the offseason to solidify the spot in case of moments just like these.
At 1-2 the Stampeders season is far from lost. Despite losing two games, Glenn has thrown 44 passes in 58 attempts for 478 yards. He has shown great confidence in the most important position in football.
The reason why the Stampeders are under .500 is because of their defense, not their offense.
The season can still be salvaged and that doesn’t always happen to teams that lose their number one quarterback.

The Calgary Stampeders fell to 1-1 on the season in the Canadian Football League following a disappointing 39-36 loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre in the Ontario capital.
But the Stampeders lost more than a football game. In the first quarter, shortly after leading the Stampeders on a touchdown drive, Calgary quarterback Drew Tate injured his left shoulder and did not return. It is unknown at this time if Tate dislocated or separated his shoulder. He is expected to fly back to Calgary this week to have his arm examined.
Backup quarterback Kevin Glenn, who played the majority of the game against Montreal today is expected to start Thursday in Montreal.
One major concern in Calgary today was their sloppy pass defense. Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray threw for 407 yards–including 118 yards to Andre Durie and 107 yards to Dontrelle Inman. Cory Boyd also had 101 yards rushing.

In a blockbuster trade in the Canadian Football League the Calgary Stampeders have traded Henry Burris to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for Kevin Glenn.
According to Dave Naylor of TSN, offensive lineman Mark Dewit would also be traded from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to the Calgary Stampeders.
In 2011, Glenn was fourth in the Canadian Football League with 3,963 yards, while Burris was fifth with 3,687 yards.
Burris though had a better quarterback rating than Glenn– 93.6 to 86.8 and a better touchdown to interception ratio of 20:12, compared to Glenn’s 19:17.
An interesting element of the deal is that Burris and Glenn were both involved in quarterbacking controversies in 2011, and even though they are trading places, the controversies at the quarterback position does not look like they will quiet down whatsoever.
Expect Tate to still be the number one quarterback in Calgary, but it isn’t completely clear if Glenn will be brought in to compete for the number one job, or if he will be used as a backup.
As for Burris, a similar situation exists. There’s a question if he will be the number one quarterback in Hamilton or if Quinton Porter will compete for the starting job.

Yesterday morning I was at a local bar with a good friend watching about ten NFL games while I had the bartender put the Eastern Division semi-final between the Montreal Alouettes and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on the smaller television in the corner.
Well, after a ton of points were scored, the game should have been on their big screen rather than their little TV.
Every time I looked someone was marching down the field and into the end zone. There was no defense by both teams, as the Tiger-Cats won 52-44 in overtime.
The 96 total points was a CFL playoff record, breaking the 89 points set in 1956 when Montreal defeated Hamilton 48-41 in the second game of the two game total point Eastern Final.
TSN called the game “eastern fireworks”. I think that is a completely fair assessment based on the offensive explosion presented.
But one area that deserves significant question marks is why Tiger-Cats head coach Marcel Bellefeuille decided to go for two points in overtime while leading 50-44. Instead of going for the simple convert, quarterback Kevin Glenn had a two yard pass to Chris Williams. Did Bellefeuille feel a single point wasn’t enough? It worked, but if it hadn’t, there would have been a lot of second guessing in Steeltown.
The Alouettes meanwhile failed to march into the end zone on their overtime possession as Anthony Calvillo had a pass to Brandon Whitaker go incomplete.

The country of New Zealand seems to be very confident. City officials in Auckland are already preparing for a parade.
Tomorrow the biggest event of the weekend takes place in the land of the kiwi, as New Zealand plays France in the Rugby World Cup (Sunday, 2am, TSN).
The Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team can compare to the pressure that New Zealand rugby players are currently going through. They are trying to win the biggest tournament in their country’s number one sport on home soil. New Zealand has beaten France already in the tournament, as they won 37-17 on September 24.

It doesn’t take an analyst to know when you give up 55 points in a sixty minute football game, your performance is very poor.
Sunday in Moncton, the Calgary Stampeders’ defense gave up 55 points in a wild shootout where they scored 36 points and still lost.
Marcus Thigpen had a monster game for the Tiger-Cats as he had three touchdowns– two on receptions from quarterback Kevin Glenn and another when he ran the ball 118 yards to the end zone on an unsuccessful field goal return. Thigpen also had 274 yards receiving.
Hamilton improves to 6-6 while Calgary drops to 7-5 and fall out of first place in the CFL’s Western Division, which is currently occupied by the Edmonton Eskimos.
The turning point seemed to be late in the first half, as the Tiger-Cats were able to score a major with fourteen seconds left in the half. Kevin Glenn threw an eight yard pass to Thigpen.
The Stampeders offense deserves an A, as quarterbacks Henry Burris and Drew Tate each had two touchdown passes. Their defense deserves an F, and special teams deserve a D, for an overall grade of C-.
