A Bug’s Life

Are you scared of bugs?

It’s okay, it’s just you and I talking here, I won’t tell anyone. Would you jump if you turned around right now and saw a big spider scampering up the wall? Let’s take it a step further – would you involuntarily take action if you looked down and a big creepy crawly was making its way up your leg, or would you just calmly flick it away? I know for a fact that I’m making some of you uncomfortable by just mentioning the possibility that a big slimy bug might be preparing to lunge towards you at this very moment…but that’s because you’re not answering my question!

I’m somewhere in the middle when it comes to bugs – not a huge fan, but not terrified of them. That said, if I ever wind up in a situation like the one that Florida Marlins left fielder Logan Morrison found himself in this week, I don’t think I’d want a camera filming me!

According to the Palm Beach Post, Morrison approached a praying mantis that had taken over the Marlins dugout late in a win over the Nationals…and it attacked! (After the Jump: Video of the Praying Mantis attack, plus Alomar and Roenick vids!) (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Lockout Professionals?

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

It’s a tale of two lockouts in the world of North American pro sports right now.

In the NFL, the season is fast-approaching as the work stoppage nears its 130th day, but there are rumblings that it may all be over soon. Not so in the NBA though, where players are being encouraged to find somewhere else to play to show the owners what’s up!

Lets start with football: ESPN reports that Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are calling for the end of the lockout, but after another marathon session, the two sides aren’t ready to come together just yet.

There is a lot of talk that July 21st might be a big day in the CBA battle, but there are also rumors that the players still don’t feel like the owners are “giving” as much as they should be in negotiations. Another thing that could potentially slow things down is the legal action being taken by former players who feel they’ve been left out of the whole process. Could that affect a potential deal reached by the players and the owners? I suppose we’ll find out on August 8th when a judge hears the case! (After the Jump: Hilarious “lockout” video from the ESPYs!) (more…)

The Hoop & The Harm: Notes from the Hardcourt

Best Served Cold?

The Miami Heat didn’t have to wait long for a chance to enact a bit of revenge for their worst loss of the season…but could they do it?

On March 4th, the San Antonio Spurs beat the Heat by 30 points, which came a night after Miami blew a huge lead in a loss to Orlando and a few days before they were said to be crying in the locker room following a loss to the Bulls.

The sports world had a good laugh at their expense over “Crygate,” but the Heat seem to have really pulled it together (at least for now) since being embarrassed by their head coach, Erik Spoelstra.

Miami beat the LA Lakers last Thursday, they whooped the Grizzlies on Saturday and on Monday, the Heat recorded the biggest win of them all: a 110-80 victory over the Spurs. That’s right, they lost by 30 in Texas and won by 30 at AmericanAirlines Arena! (more…)

Fired Up?

With “Crygate” now in their rear view mirrors (despite the rest of us still laughing about it), the Miami Heat are gearing up for a meeting with the LA Lakers tonight at AmericanAirlines Arena.

They beat the Lake Show 96-80 back on Christmas day, but a lot has changed since then in FLA! For starters, that last win came in the middle of a run that saw the Heat take 21 of 22 games. At that point I think we all kind of figured that they had sorted out how to win games together and would be unstoppable for the rest of the season. Oh, how wrong we were!

After that streak was over they lost four in a row, won 13 of 16 and now come into tonight’s action having lost five straight. They’re not just losing either, they’re blowing huge leads, getting blown out or losing tight games and (allegedly) crying about it in the locker room afterwards.

I haven’t weighed in on “Crygate” until now, but I think it’s time. Are you ready? (more…)

Nash and Love won’t be in NBA All-Star Game

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

The NBA All-Star Game is and continues to be a game where efforts are made to make sure the big name players play.

It is not necessarily the best players in the league.

That motto has happened once again this year. On Thursday night the reserves were announced. Victoria’s Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns, who is second in the NBA in assists with 11.1 per game, and Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who leads the NBA with 15.5 rebounds per game, were not chosen and completely overlooked.

Now I had a look at the West roster and I don’t believe Nash or Love should take the spot of any of the seven reserves chosen, but what is the harm of increasing the roster size of the NBA All-Star Game from 12 to 15? I’m not saying that every team in the NBA should be represented, but when you don’t have your league leading rebounder and two-time MVP winner not going to Los Angeles February 20, there are some serious issues.
