Red Sox & White Sox make deal

The Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox have made a baseball trade.

On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox traded third baseman Kevin Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Brent Lilibridge and right handed pitcher Zach Stewart.

Youkilis might be on the downside of his career, but has hit as many as 29 home runs and recorded as many as 115 runs batted in over a season.

This season however, the three-time Gold Glove winner had struggled, as he was only batting .225 with four home runs and 13 runs batted in.

It’s interesting because even though the White Sox are in first place in the American League Central and the Red Sox are in fourth place in the American League East, Chicago and Boston have identical records of 38-34.

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays lost 9-0 Miami on Sunday and fell to 37-35 on the year. Heading into a big three game series this week in Boston at Fenway Park, the Blue Jays are still in playoff contention as they are only 2.5 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the wildcard. They will however continue to struggle if their pitching staff has injury woes.

Jeter collects 3,000th hit

Derek Jeter not only collected his 3,000th hit of his career on Saturday. He did it with remarkable style.

The All-Star Yankee shortstop became the first player in a  Yankee uniform and 28th player in Major League Baseball history to have 3,000 career hits. Jeter accomplished the feat with a home run on a full count in the third inning off of Tampa Bay Rays’ starter David Price.

Jeter had a magical game as he went five for five, with two runs scored, two runs batted in, a double, stolen base, in addition to the home run. He also had the game winning run batted in to score Eduardo Nunez, as the Yankees defeated the Rays 5-4 to move to 52-35, and a game back of the Boston Red Sox for first place in the American League East.

The last player to record 3,000 hits was Craig Biggio of the Houston Astros on June 28, 2007. Pete Rose has the most hits with 4,256.

In other Yankees’ news, third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be out a month with a slight tear in his right knee. He will not represent the American League for Tuesday’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Phoenix. He will be replaced by Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers in the starting lineup and Kevin Youkilis of the Boston Red Sox on the roster.

Major League Baseball Preview–American League West

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

The Texas Rangers were the talk of the American League last year as they surprised many by not only getting by the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners to win the American League West to win the division, but getting by the New York Yankees to win the American League Championship Series in six games as well.

In comes third baseman Adrian Beltre from Boston and catcher Mike Napoli from the Los Angeles Angels (via Toronto) and out goes  ace Cliff Lee to Philadelphia, designated hitter Vladimir Guerrero to Baltimore and closer Frank Francisco to Toronto. Beltre became expendable in Boston when they acquired first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and moved Kevin Youkilis to third. On paper Lee would obviously be the most significant loss, but don’t forget, he only joined the Rangers at the trade deadline last year, when Texas had a huge lead in the division.

Major League Baseball Preview–American League East

In my first of a six-part series this week, I will examine the American League East.

The New York Yankees have dominated the division, winning ten of the last thirteen years. However they have only one World Series since 2001. Despite outstanding production in the middle of their batting order, (Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira) it is the pitching depth that I’m concerned about the most. After C.C. Sabathia, the Yankees don’t have much. A.J. Burnett and Phil Hughes will need to have better seasons in 2011 than 2010, where they each had an earned run average above 4.00.
