The Pittsburgh Penguins once again exemplified outstanding offence and are the first team in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs to advance to the conference championship.

James Neal of Whitby, Ontario had a career night as he recorded his first career playoff hat trick in Pittsburgh’s 6-2 win over Ottawa as the Penguins eliminated the Senators 4-1 in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. The Penguins will now play the Boston/New York Rangers winner in the Eastern Final. The Bruins lead that series 3-1.

Other Penguins with multi-point games Friday were defenceman Kris Letang with a goal and two assists, and reigning Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin with a goal and an assist.

Letang, a native of Montreal, has had an excellent Stanley Cup Playoffs. He leads the Penguins in the postseason with 13 assists and 16 points. His play has been strong enough that he should be given considerable consideration for the Canadian men’s ice hockey team at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Penguins go on offensive surge against the Senators

The Pittsburgh Penguins had no problems scoring whatsoever in game four of the Eastern Conference semi-final against the Ottawa Senators Wednesday evening.

The Penguins score seven times past the two Senators goalies of Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner en route to a convincing 7-3 victory to take a 3-1 series lead.

Defenceman Kris Letang led the Penguins offensive attack with four assists. James Neal was a force with two goals on nine shots, and an assist. While Jarome Iginla, Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis also had multi-point games, with two points each.

The Senators meanwhile do not seem to have any confidence. Captain Daniel Alfredsson stated afterwards, he didn’t think the Senators would be able to put together three wins in a row and come back and win the series. He later stated his words were taken out of context. That backtrack however does not seem all that believable.

Weekend Sports Preview–MLB Playoffs, NHL, NFL, CFL–October 15-16, 2011

Devan Dubnyk (Barry Gutierrez, Associated Press)

Heading into the weekend, there is one particular statistic that stands out to me over all the others.

After eight days in the NHL’s regular season, the Edmonton Oilers are tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the fewest goals allowed in the entire league! That’s right folks, the Oilers and Red Wings have only disallowed three goals each.

Oilers’ goaltenders Devan Dubnyk and Nikolai Khabibulin have actually only given up two regulation goals between them. Dubnyk gave up a softy to Kris Letang in the Oilers’ 2-1 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, while Khabibulin gave up a regulation goal to Matt Cullen in Edmonton’s 2-1 shootout loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

On Saturday night, the Oilers will entertain the Vancouver Canucks at Rexall Place. They will have a tough time containing Daniel and Henrik Sedin though, who have combined for 114 points in 123 games in their career versus the Oilers. Game time is 8pm and can be seen on CBC.

Holy Roli!

Remember the time the Tampa Bay Lightning are tied for top spot in the Eastern Conference?

That time would be now, thanks to a 1-0 overtime win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, a 34-save shutout for newly acquired goalie Dwayne Roloson. The Lightning picked up Roli the Goalie on the weekend for practically nothing from the New York Islanders, sending him from the bottom of the standings to near the top.

I’ve always liked the way the unassuming Roloson carries himself – when he was with the Oilers, the thing that always stuck out for me was his insistence that he still had years of hockey ahead of him despite his age, since he had shared starting duties for a big chunk of his career. Some people didn’t believe him, but here he is at 41 looking like a young buck. (After the jump: All-Star voting, Ovechkin’s new commercial, Kovalchuk’s brutal night and a WJHC final preview!)
