Oilers defenceman Andy Sutton retires

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2013

According to TSN, Edmonton Oilers defenceman Andy Sutton has announced his retirement at the age of 38.

Sutton, had three goals and seven assists in 2011-12  for the Oilers and then missed all of 2012-13 after undergoing knee surgery.

Sutton played 13 NHL seasons with the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild, Atlanta Thrashers, New York Islanders, Ottawa Senators, Anaheim Ducks and Oilers, with 2011-12 being his only year in Edmonton.

Sutton was acquired by the Edmonton Oilers from the Anaheim Ducks for Kurtis Foster on July 1, 2011.

A native of Kingston, Ontario, considered by many a hockey hot bed, Sutton had his best seasons with the Thrashers where he had 67 points over a span of three seasons from 2003-2006. He was also a +5 on the Thrashers blueline during that time, impressive when one can recall that the Atlanta/Winnipeg Jets franchise has only made the playoffs once (2007).

Devils give up a lot for Zidlicky

One of the more intriguing weekend trades happened between the New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild.

On Friday night, the Devils acquired Marek Zidlicky from the Minnesota Wild for former Edmonton Oiler blueliner Kurtis Foster, forwards Nick Palmieri and Stephane Veilleux, and two draft choices.

Is it me, or did the Devils give up a ton for one player past his prime? So far this season Zidlicky has 14 assists, is a -8 and has missed 13 games with a concussion.

Stay tuned to www.anysportanytime.ca for short blogs about most trades that happen today and my opinion for each.

Oilers re-signing of Sutton is positive

Monday, February 13th, 2012

The Edmonton Oilers have decided to re-sign Andy Sutton to a one year deal. The deal is one year and is worth $1.5 million.

This has definitely been an off year for the Edmonton Oilers hockey club with more expected, but Sutton has shown the physical presence  the team expected he would bring when they acquired him in the off-season from the Anaheim Ducks for defenceman Kurtis Foster, who coincidentally has moved on to New Jersey.

If anything, Sutton has possibly been a little too physical, as he has already been suspended for 13 games this season.

I think Sutton’s interest in staying in Edmonton is a positive move and will help the other blueliners with their overall development and maturity. What do you think?

In other Oiler news, former forward Mike Comrie has retired. Comrie, whose father Bill founded the Brick, played last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but never really fully came back after hip surgery. In 2001-02, while with the Oilers he scored a career high 33 goals.

Predators sign Stortini

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

The Nashville Predators now have some added toughness to go along with Jordin Tootoo.

Yesterday the Predators signed enforcer Zack Stortini to a one year deal worth $550,000.

Stortini became a little expendable from the Oilers, when they were able to sign Ben Eager and Darcy Hordichuk and acquire Andy Sutton from the Anaheim Ducks for Kurtis Foster. With the acquisition of these three enforcers, there’s no doubt in my mind that Oilers’ General Manager Steve Tambellini took the time to read the brilliant article written by anysportanytime’s Terry Nistor back in the fall.

Last season Stortini had four assists and 76 penalty minutes for the Oilers in 32 games. In his career he has 718 penalty minutes in 256 career games.

The Predators also signed winger Niclas Bergfors to a one year deal worth $575,000. Last year he had 12 goals and 24 assists with the Atlanta Thrashers and Florida Panthers. He will be relied upon to provide offense to the team after they traded center Matthew Lombardi and defenceman Cody Franson to Toronto for defenceman Brett Lebda and forward Robert Slaney.

In other signings, the Ottawa Senators also got significantly tougher with the acquisition of enforcer Zenon Konopka from the New York Islanders to a one year deal worth $700,000. Konopka led the National Hockey League in penalty minutes with 307 in 2010-11.

Oilers get tougher and stronger for 2011-12

Friday, July 1st, 2011

The Edmonton Oilers spent money to increase their size for the upcoming season.

On Friday, they signed the 6’2″, 235 pound enforcer Ben Eager from the San Jose Sharks to a 3 year deal worth $3.3 million. Eager, a left winger, has 741 penalty minutes in 323 career games with the Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Thrashers and San Jose Sharks. He doesn’t have much of an upside though as he only had ten points in 34 games.

The team also signed Eric Belanger from Phoenix, Cam Barker from Minnesota and Darcy Hordichuk from Florida. The Oilers also traded Kurtis Foster to Anaheim for Andy Sutton.

Belanger is considered an above average faceoff specialist who has had 81 points in the last two seasons with Minnesota, Washington and Phoenix. His 40 points he notched in 2010-11, would have been good enough for fifth in Oilers’ team scoring. His contract is for three years at$5.25 million.

Barker, had an excellent junior career with the Medicine Hat Tigers, but has not equated his junior success to the NHL. The Winnipeg native signed a one year deal worth $2.25 million. With the Oilers not having a strong defensive unit, expectations will be higher for Barker than ever before.
