When it comes to sports and the internet, sometimes the only thing better than an amazing [insert sport here] highlight is a goofy video!
It’s not always pro athletes trying to be funny either – sometimes it’s a terrible blooper or an ugly fall, occasionally a team mascot might be involved and other times, a popular “trend” may pop up where you least expect it.
Take the act of “Tebowing,” for example.
Ever since quarterback Tim Tebow took over in Denver, “Tebowing” has become an incredibly popular thing to do. The Broncos pivot is deeply religious, you see, and he routinely takes a knee to throw up a prayer, unmoved by anything that is happening around him.
When I say it’s become a popular thing to do, I’m not kidding! The internet is now full of “Tebowers,” and that trend has even made it to semi-pro and pro hockey. My pal Adam Chorneyko threw down a “Tebow” after potting a goal for the ECHL’s Colorado Eagles back in November, and it happened again this week in the NHL:
I mentioned earlier that sometimes mascots get in on the action – check out this video featuring Rocky the Mountain Lion of the Denver Nuggets. (VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP!) (more…)
This week on 15 Minutes of Fame: The Esks spank the Ti-Cats, we discuss a report that says college athletes should be paid, Drew Doughty is a no-show at Kings camp, Buffalo’s Tyler Myers cashes in, an early look at Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and the NHL launches a social media policy.
In the GABBYs: Marc Savard, the Edmonton Capitals, Novak Djokovic, baseball injuries, Dustin Byfuglien, Adam Dunn…and this week’s Punchline is Ron Jaworski!
We’re back for another week of action on “15 Minutes of Fame,” your favorite sports video blog’s favorite sports video blog! In the GABBYs: Mark Texiera, Toronto FC, the Green Bay Packers, tennis player Bojana Jovanovski , boxer Bobby Moreno and the NBA!
It was another solid week in the world of sports, and we are once again here to break it all down for you! On this episode of 15 Minutes of Fame: Ryan Smyth’s return to Edmonton and the accompanying controversy, a look at which Free Agents are still looking for work and a thumbs up to the Edmonton Eskimos!

There’s no question it’s been a tough couple of years for the Edmonton Oilers, but there is a lot to be optimistic about as we inch towards the 2011-12 NHL season.
Another last place finish, while slightly embarrassing, gave the team another first overall pick at the draft, the Oil have been very active in the free agent market so far, and then there was that trade they made somewhere in between.
Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini introduced, or rather, re-introduced Ryan Smyth to the media on Tuesday afternoon, about two weeks after the start of a whirlwind series of events that led to his escape from LA. It was back then that Smyth was rumored to have asked Kings GM Dean Lombardi for a trade to Edmonton, which was followed by denials, anonymous confirmations, silence…and then a trade that was announced at the Draft, but wouldn’t be made final until a couple of days later.
So, what got Smyth longing for Edmonton? He says he landed in the city a few weeks ago with a friend, and it just “felt like home.” (more…)
As always, the birthday of our great nation also signifies the start of free agency in the NHL! Thanks to smartphones and free/stolen wireless internet, it’s now easier than ever to be social and remain glued to your favorite sports sites…but who is going where this year?
The biggest fish in this year’s free agent market is definitely Brad Richards, who is coming off a 77-point season with the Dallas Stars. Richards is a talented playmaking centre who is going to score big money for sure on the open market. There are plenty of teams lining up to make a pitch for the 31 year old, including the Leafs, Rangers and Kings, but it will be interesting to see who is able to land him in the end.
Tomas Vokoun is easily the best available goalie out there this summer, after a 22-win, six-shutout season in Florida. Will he stay with the Panthers? They certainly have the cap space to make a deal, and they need to add over $20-million in salary to reach the cap floor! Adding Brian Campbell could be the first of many big moves this summer for Florida.
As for defencemen, there are a lot of veterans available at the moment, including the likes of Ed Jovanovski and Bryan McCabe. There are some intriguing restricted free agents on defence that could come into play, like Shea Weber and Drew Doughty, but I can’t see Nashville and LA letting these guys get away.
I can’t wait to see how things shake down! (After the jump: Pro tennis player messes with ball boy, Hilarious ESPN “World Cup Fever” commercial and more!) (more…)
After back-to-back last place finishes, the Edmonton Oilers will (barring any earth-shattering wheeling & dealing) once again be stepping to the podium before anyone else at the NHL Entry Draft on Friday.
Last year, they nabbed sniper Taylor Hall with the first overall pick. This year, it looks like it’ll be Red Deer Rebels playmaker Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. That leaves the Oilers stacked to the brim with young talent, especially up front, but maybe lacking the guidance of a few veteran players to help steer the ship.
Enter: Ryan Smyth?
Seemingly out of nowhere on Monday night, rumors started to circulate that Smyth had spoken to the LA Kings about a trade back to the team that drafted him in 1994. TSN’s Bob McKenzie was the first to report the story, saying a deal “certainly isn’t imminent,” but that “both organizations are well aware of the existing situation.” (After the jump: Why Ryan Smyth is a good fit for the Oil…) (more…)
Get ready for another big night of NHL playoff action on Tuesday!
A day after the Tampa Bay Lightning forced a game seven against the Penguins in Pittsburgh and the San Jose Sharks got a big goal from their captain in a series clinching win over the LA Kings, we’ve got a pair of Game Sevens to look forward to. First up, it’s the Sabres in Philly, followed by the Canucks looking to avoid a total collapse when they host the Blackhawks.
Also on Tuesday night: the Habs can take it the distance with a win over the Bruins, which would give us the most seven-game series’ since the 1995 playoffs!
So, who will join Detroit, Washington, Nashville and SJ in the second round? (more…)
The NHL’s head disciplinarian kicked off the 2011 playoffs by handing out a couple of early suspensions to LA’s Jarret Stoll (one game) and Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan (two games). He followed that up by deciding not to suspend Vancouver’s Raffi Torres for a controversial hit on Sunday night (even though Torres probably deserved at least a game or two), which drew the ire of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Well, after Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning, it looks like he’s got another couple of decisions to make! Tampa’s Steve Downie and Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz will both be hearing from the league on Tuesday, though my guess is that Kunitz will be the one facing a ban for his actions. (After the jump: Watch both incidents, plus an UPDATE on the situation) (more…)
This week, the guys talk about the Edmonton Oilers and the fact that they won the first overall pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft. They go over four possible candidates who may be picked by the Oilers.
Then, in the GABBYs – On the good side: The New Jersey Devils go from laughing stock to relatively respectable, the National Hockey League sticks to their guns on suspensions, and Edmonton Oilers Jordan Eberle and Devyn Dubnyk are going to the world championships.
On the bad side: Detroit Pistons Charlie Villanueva acts like a child on the court, Texas Rangers outfieler Josh Hamilton breaks his arm, and the Colombian soccer player who kicked an owl upgrades to kicking someone in the chest. HONORABLE MENTION: Kobe Bryant gets $100,000 fine.
In Quick Hits: Now that the NHL playoffs are underway, who does Kerrzy think can make it all the way?

Well folks, the NHL postseason is finally here: sixteen teams looking for sixteen wins and an opportunity to sip out of Lord Stanley’s famed mug.
The first round of the playoffs begins on Wednesday night and features some burning rivalries, new and old, and some others that are slowing inching toward “rivalry” status. Whatever the case, it won’t be long now until we see the captain of one of the sixteen remaining teams lifting the Stanley Cup proudly over his head…but who will it be?
Here’s a look, through my eyes, at the Western Conference pairings! (more…)
