Oilers shutout Blue Jackets 3-0

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

If you looked up the word pitiful in the dictionary, you just might see a picture of the Edmonton Oilers/Columbus Blue Jackets game at Rexall Place last night.

I had just seen two very entertaining games earlier in the night (Colorado beating Buffalo 5-4 in a shootout and Montreal beating Ottawa 3-2 in a shootout) and it was easy to see why the Oilers and Blue Jackets were the 29th and 30th ranked teams in the National Hockey League.

Both franchises had significant flaws. The Blue Jackets were completely offensively inept. I felt Blue Jackets superstar Rick Nash didn’t look strong at all. That’s what happens when you only take one shot on net and then a two minute minor for shooting the puck over the glass.

In Edmonton meanwhile, it is clear Ryan Jones is struggling. Jones on one shift while out on the ice to kill a penalty, lost the puck on a breakaway and then fanned on the puck while on a two-on-one. It was interesting to see though that former Oiler defenceman Steve Smith gave Jones a smile when he came back to the bench. I hate to say it, but the only thing that came to mind at the time was 1986.

The Oilers got their goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Taylor Hall and Linus Omark and a 22 save performance by Devan Dubnyk.

The Oilers next host the Calgary Flames Friday.

Oilers lose eleventh straight in 4-2 loss to Wild

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

This just in.

If you watched tonight’s game, you need a life. The Edmonton Oilers are going nowhere this season, and played extremely abysmal hockey once again against the Minnesota Wild.

The Wild beat the Oilers for the 16th straight time at home, tying  the current streak of consecutive home wins against an opponent at home.

Yikes. Well I’ll be honest. As soon as it was 2-0 Minnesota eight minutes in, I changed the channel and watched the Bruins and Leafs for the next two hours. Basically because I have Bruin netminder Tim Thomas in two meaningful hockey pools I’m in.

I then switched back to watch the Oilers and Wild for the final third period and saw Linus Omark’s fantastic power play goal.

Tonight was basically ho hum. Two teams going nowhere. Were you bored watching the Oilers as much as I was tonight? We’re always interested to here what you have to say at AnySportAnyTime.

Weekend Sports Recap–Oilers/Flames, March Madness, Women’s World Curling Championships

Monday, March 28th, 2011

The Calgary Flames are a very lucky franchise. Saturday night they came all the way back to beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 in a shootout after being down 4-1 in the third period.

I agree with Edmonton Oilers’ head coach Tom Renney who was pleased with the Oilers’ effort. For fifty minutes, the Oilers carried the play, and Renney should be delighted with the play of Teemu Hartikainen, Linus Omark, Ryan O’Marra and Magnus Paajarvi. They held their own and played at a high level. The Flames were lucky to beat the Edmonton/Oklahoma City Boilers. (Oarons just doesn’t make any sense!)

In curling, I’ll tell you again, if Amber Holland had Jennifer Jones’ front end, Canada would have won the Women’s World Curling Championship easily this past week. I would take Dawn Askin and Jill Officer over Heather Kalenchuk and Tammi Schneider any day. Team Canada simply could not make a shot in the tenth end of the Gold medal game against Sweden’s Anette Norberg, and at the end of the day, it cost them significantly.

Finally in March Madness, Connecticut, Butler, Virginia Commonwealth and Kentucky are  off to the final four next weekend in Houston. We have two NCAA basketball powerhouses in UConn and Kentucky, and two schools that many basketball fans will cheer for because of their underdog, small school status!

Weekend Sports Recap December 10-12

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Linus Omark (Wikimedia Commons)

Well, folks. The youtube sensation, Linus Omark rocked Edmonton Friday night with an absolute bang.

It was fun. Very fun indeed. Let’s just hope this Swedish sensation is here to stay, and Tom Renney finds a place for him in the lineup when Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky return from their respective injuries.

On Sunday night, the kids had problems getting going and ran into a hot Roberto Luongo. But on the bright side, the Oilers only lost 2-1 to probably the best team in the Western Conference at the moment.

On the dark side, there are still a lot of inconsistencies– one of them is lack of shooting the puck on net for long periods of time. The last two games, the Oilers have had a total of two shots on goal in the third period. Simply inexcusable during the final twenty minutes.

Weekend Sports Preview–December 11-12

Tom Brady (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

Tom Brady could possibly be playing his best football ever. Monday night at Foxboro, Brady was at his best. The former draft pick of the Montreal Expos (that’s right– he was drafted as a catcher in 1995) threw for four touchdowns and 326 passing yards in a 45-3 demolition of the New York Jets.

If this win won’t shut up the cocky Jets who guaranteed a Super Bowl win to begin the year, nothing will.
