Weekend Sports Preview–November 3 & 4–NFL, CIS, NCAA, NBA, World Golf Championship

Saturday, November 3rd, 2012

The most dominant football team in Alberta is not in the Canadian Football League, but in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. On Saturday night at McMahon Stadium, the University of Calgary Dinos (7-1) will host the University of Manitoba in the Hardy Cup semi-final (Saturday, SHAW TV, 5pm).

Quarterback Eric Dzwilewski of Boise, Idaho set a Canada West Conference record with a 70.6 completion percentage, and helped set team records for most points, touchdowns, first downs, passing yards, completions and total yards of offense in 2012.

Bubba Watson wins the Masters

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

Bubba Watson (Carl Linderg, Wikimedia Commons)

One of golf’s most interesting and unique personalities walked away from Augusta Sunday with a green jacket.

American Bubba Watson, known for his creativity and personality, defeated former British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff after shooting a 10-under par and then shooting par, par in a two hole playoff.

Watson’s win Sunday might however have been overshadowed a little by Oosthuizen’s remarkable double eagle on the second hole, becoming only the fourth player in Masters history to accomplish the feat, joining Gene Sarazen in 1935, Bruce Devlin in 1967 and Jeff Maggert in 1994.

Sunday also saw a pair of holes-in-one. One was hit by Adam Scott and the other by Bo Van Pelt, who shot an 8-under 64, tying the course record previously set by Maurice Bembridge (1974), Hale Irwin (1975), Gary Player (1978), Greg Norman (1988) and David Toms (1998).

In the end it was Bubba Watson’s day however. The native of Bagdad, Florida (not Iraq) has always thought he might have Attention Deficit Disorder, but has never had his individual suspicion checked by the medical community. A golfer who plays professionally with a possible mental disability is remarkable. A golfer who possibly has A.D.D. and wins the Masters is even more amazing.

Couples and Dufner lead the Masters

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

The entire golf world knows about 52 year old Fred Couples. The man from Seattle with his rich grey hair and the 1992 Masters Champion.

But what do we know about Jason Dufner, who like Couples is at five under par, and has a one stroke lead on golfers with great major resumes–Rory McIlroy of Great Britain (2011 U.S. Open Champion) and Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa  (2010 British Open Champion), along with American Bubba Watson and Spain’s Sergio Garcia, who are part of the elite group of the world’s best themselves?

Well, Dufner is a 35 year old golfer, born in the same year as I, from Auburn, Alabama, a town that is known more for its university football than golf.  His most famous tournament to date was the 2011 PGA Championship where he lost in a playoff to fellow American Keegan Bradley. He has won twice on the Nationwide Tour, but never on golf’s largest stage.

Just remember, Couples and Dufner are the current leaders at -5, but it is Dufner that is in his prime at the moment, while Couples is the veteran on the Senior Tour.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Weekend Sports Preview–November 5 & 6–NHL, NCAA, CFL, NFL & World Golf Championship

Nikolai Khabibulin (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

From every angle possible, it is a great time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. The kids are producing. The veterans are producing. The entire team is buying into Tom Renney’s defensive-minded system and Nikolai Khabibulin has been completely spectacular.

On Saturday night, the Oilers (8-2-2), visit the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena (CBC, 8pm). Edmonton is currently tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for first place in the Western Conference. They have also only given up 18 goals all season long, five fewer than second place Dallas at 23 goals. The recent play of Khabibulin led Brad May of Rogers Sportsnet to say last night that Khabibulin right now “is the best goaltender in the NHL.”

The Coyotes meanwhile are trying to get to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the third year in a row. The last two seasons they have lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Quarterfinals. So far in 2011-12, they are 6-4-2, and tied with the Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings for fifth place in the Western Conference.

The Coyotes’ top player this season is Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native Ray Whitney, who leads Phoenix with five goals, seven assists.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Canadian advantage at RBC Canadian Open?

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

Mike Weir (Richard Wayne, Wikimedia Commons)

It hasn’t been a great year in Canadian golf. Mike Weir and Stephen Ames haven’t had a great golf season by any means.

But if there was ever a time for someone to step up, it could be this week. Why? Well, the top golfers in the world that are participating, such as Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Rickie Fowler, Jim Furyk, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, all played at the British Open in Sandwich, England last week.

That’s eight time zones away from the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver. Can you spell jet lag?

With all the top talent in the world competing at Royal St. George’s, the Canadians stayed home.

True, none of them qualified, but whatever extra practice any of them received while in Vancouver could be a benefit starting today.

Among the Canadians that will be competing this week include Ames and Dustin Risdon of Calgary and Mitch Evanecz of Red Deer.

Woods to miss British Open

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

Tiger Woods won’t be playing at the British Open next weekend.

According to the Associated Press, Woods’s leg injury will need some more time to heal. Woods also missed the United States Open almost a month ago at Congressional near Washington.

Woods injured his knee and Achilles’ tendon while hitting the ball from an awkward stance on the 17th hole during the third round of the Masters in April. He later admitted he made a mistake in trying to compete at the Players’ Championship in May, an event he withdrew from early.

Woods has also fallen down to seventeenth in the World Golf Rankings. He trails England’s Luke Donald by 4.97 points.

There’s also no word when Woods has the intention of practicing again, not just competing. Woods will be replaced by American Jason Dufner, who is ranked 68th in the world.

The British Open Championship takes place July 14-17 in Royal St. George’s. South African Louis Oosthuizen won the British Open in 2010, while American Ben Curtis won the British Open the last time the event took place at Royal St. George’s in 2003. South African Charl Schwartzel won the 2011  Masters and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland won the 2011 United States Open.

McIlroy shoots -6 in 1st round of US Open

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

Rory McIlroy (Andrew Redington, Getty Images)

Rory McIlroy seems to have put a bad final round at the Masters behind him.

Today in the first round of the United States Open at the Congressional Golf Course near Washington, D.C., McIlroy became the first golfer at the U.S. Open in 35 years to take a three stroke lead after 18 holes when she shot a dazzling 6-under 65.

McIlroy, from Holywood, Northern Ireland, had a bogey-free round. He birdied the first, fourth, sixth, twelfth, seventeenth and eighteenth holes.

But the two golfers who are tied for second, are definitely very strong formidable opponents. Y.E. Yang of South Korea won the 2009 PGA Championship and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa won the Masters this past April. Both are -3.

Other notable names under par include defending British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa (-2), 2008 Canadian Open Champion Chez Reavie of the United States (-1), 2009 British Open Champion Stewart Cink of the United States (-1), 2010 U.S. Open Champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland (-1) and 1997 PGA Champion Davis Love III of the United States.
