Mixed day on the Canadian Golf scene

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

With the RBC Canadian Open taking place this weekend at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, I don’t think too many people expected the biggest Canadian golf news to be at a tournament other than the most significant golf tournament on Canadian soil.

But that is what happened today.

Rod Spittle of St. Catherines, Ontario is tied for the lead with Americans Mark Calcavecchia and Lee Rinker at the British Senior Open at Walton on the Hill, Surrey, England.

Spittle, who turned 56 years old four days ago, has one Champions Tour victory to his credit, the AT&T Championship in San Antonio, Texas last October.

Among the three, Calcavecchia is by far the most notable name, having won the 1989 British Open.

Clarke leads Johnson at British Open

Saturday, July 16th, 2011

A variety of weather patterns dominated the headlines at the British Open today at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, Kent, England.

Golfers that teed off early had to battle heavy rain and high winds, while those that teed off late got to play golf in almost perfect weather conditions.

At the end of the day Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke leads American Dustin Johnson by a stroke at -5. There are only four other players under par. American Rickie Fowler and Dane Thomas Bjorn are each at -2, while American Lucas Glover and Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez are each at -1.

It was a very tough day for Glover, who began the day tied at -4 with Clarke. But the 2009 United States Open Champion, who ironically was one of very few golfers not to wear a glove, missed several very short putts that put him four strokes off the lead.

The 68 posted by Fowler was sensational because he played in very difficult weather conditions for the most part.

Clarke, meanwhile has been the most consistent golfer in the tournament so far. He has been in the 60′s for each of the first three rounds, shooting 68, 68 and 69.

Weekend Sports Preview–British Open, CFL, MLB, Women’s World Cup

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Darren Clarke (Paddy Briggs, Wikimedia Commons)

When Darren Clarke’s wife Heather died of cancer in 2006, the entire golf community mourned. But in the last five years, Clarke’s life has turned around a little. Last year, he got engaged to Miss Northern Ireland Alison Campbell, and after round two of the British Open on Friday, Clarke and American Lucas Glover are tied for the lead at -4.

Clarke, who is 42 years of age, is trying to become the third golfer from Northern Ireland to win a major. Graeme McDowell won the 2010 United States Open and Rory McIlroy won the 2011 United States Open.

Glover, meanwhile, is no stranger to major success himself, as he won the 2009 United States Open at Bethpage Black in New York.

However, Clarke and Glover are just the co-leaders in southeast England and have a long ways to go. A remarkable 31 players are within four strokes of the lead. Martin Kaymer and Miguel Angel Jimenez are in a group at -3, Americans Tom Lehman, Davis Love III and Dustin Johnson are in a group at -2, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and English amateur Tom Lewis are in a group at -1, and Y.E. Yang, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia are in a group at even.

TSN’s coverage begins at 4am Saturday morning. I’m waking up when Garcia is teeing off, at 5:25am Mountain Time.

English amateur tied for lead at British Open

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Tom Lewis (Bing Images)

If you didn’t know the name of Tom Lewis, well, I guess you know now.

The English amateur that is only twenty years of age was the story on day one of the third major of the 2011 golf season.

Lewis shot a -5, to tie for the lead with Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn. Lewis, who was named after his playing partner and British Open icon Tom Watson, birdied the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth holes in dominating the back nine of Royal St. George’s.

Bjorn meanwhile had the lead for the majority of the day, until Lewis soared to tie him. Like Lewis, Bjorn birdied each hole from the fourteenth to the sixteenth, but a costly bogey on the eighteenth hole means he is not leading Lewis by a stroke heading into round two.

The most fascinating shot of the day came from American Dustin Johnson, who got a hole in one on the 16th hole. He is sitting at even par.

Unlike the United States Open where Rory McIlroy dominated the field, the British Open is significantly tighter. There are 35 players within four shots of the lead. Among the three that are only one shot back at-4 are American Webb Simpson, Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez (the Mechanic) and American Lucas Glover, the 2009 United States Open Champion.

Weekend Sports Preview May 14-15–NHL Conference Finals, NBA Playoffs, MLB, NLL Champion’s Cup, Players’ Championship

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Ryan Kesler (Bing Images)

A jammed packed weekend of sports takes this weekend. The Vancouver Canucks will host the San Jose Sharks in game one of the Western Conference Final (Sunday, 6pm, CBC).

This is the first Western Conference Final for the Canucks since they went to the Stanley Cup Final in 1994 and lost to the New York Rangers in seven games. But it is interesting that the Canucks’ playoff most valuable player is a Yankee. Ryan Kesler leads all players in the playoffs with 15 points. He also leads the Canucks in the playoffs in +/- with a +6, power play goals (3), short handed assists (1) and game winning goals (2).

Woods withdraws from Players’ Championship

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

After a horrible front nine at the Players’ Championship in Northern Florida, Tiger Woods has pulled out for the weekend.

Woods shot a +6 in the opening nine holes, and is currently 13 strokes back of Nick Watney, the 2011 World Golf Championship-Cadillac Championship winner this past March in Miami, and Lucas Glover, the 2009 United States Open Champion.

Woods had a bogey on the first, fifth and ninth holes and a triple bogey on the fourth hole when he couldn’t clear a water hazard thirty yards in front of him.
