Edmontonians win World Cups

Sunday, January 13th, 2013

It was a great weekend for two Edmonton-based athletes as Spruce Grove’s Mike Riddle won a World Cup men’s halfpipe skiing competition in Copper Mountain, Colorado on Friday and Edmonton native Jesse Lumsden was the brakeman for Lyndon Rush in a Canadian two-man World Cup bobsled victory in Koenigssee, Germany on Saturday.

Riddle rebounded after struggling in qualification to post a score of 91.2 points. Americans Aaron Blunck and David Wise posted scores of 87 and 83.6 points to finish in second and third place respectively.

Great weekend for Bobsled Canada

Kaillie Humphries (Wikimedia Commons)

It was a fantastic start for Team Canada at the World Bobsled Championships in Lake Placid, New York on the weekend.

In women’s action Saturday, Kaillie Humphries of Calgary and Jennifer Ciochetti of Edmonton (profiled in the 2010 Olympic Issue of Prospect Magazine) won the Gold medal with a four run aggregate time of 3:48.57. It was the first time ever Canada won a Gold medal at a World Bobsled Championship. Humphries and Heather Moyse won the Gold medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

However Humphries and Ciochetti look extremely comfortable together. That is very surprising because of how little they have competed with each other this season. They are a perfect two for two as a team after winning a World Cup recently in Calgary. Humphries began the season with Emily Baadsvik of St. Stephen, New Brunswick.

Then in the men’s action yesterday, Lyndon Rush of Humboldt, Saskatchewan and Jesse Lumsden of Edmonton won Silver in the two men competition behind Americans Steven Holcomb and Steve Langton. Lumsden and Rush had the lead after the second heat but lost it after heat three.

Outstanding weekend by Canadians in Whistler

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

It was a great weekend for Canadian athletes at the Bobsled and Skeleton World Cup in Whistler, British Columbia.

Last night, Lyndon Rush of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Cody Sorensen of Ottawa and Jesse Lumsden and Neville Wright of Edmonton won Bronze in the four man competition behind two powerful Russian teams. Wright, is a great friend of Prospect Magazine as he was profiled in the Olympic issue prior to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. With the bronze medal performance, Rush and his team moved from 14th to 10th in the World Cup Standings. Rush and Lumsden also won Gold in the two-man competition.

Overall, Canada won five medals on the weekend– three Gold medals and two Bronze medals. Mellisa Hollingsworth won the women’s skeleton competition on Thursday. In women’s bobsled, Canadian Olympic Gold medallist Kaillie Humphries of Calgary teamed with Emily Baadsvik of St. Stephen, New Brunswick to win Gold, while Helen Upperton of Calgary and Shelly-Ann Brown of Scarborough won Bronze.

The circuit now moves to Calgary’s Canada Olympic Park next weekend.

Weekend Sports Preview–Super Bowl, NHL, NBA, Bobsledding

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Super Bowl XLVI takes place tomorrow from Indianapolis, as the New York Giants play the New England Patriots in a rematch of the Super Bowl from 2007 when the Giants beat the Patriots 17-14 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Currently the Patriots are a 2.5 point favourite.

With all the talk that the Giants have the better defense than the Patriots, I simply don’t buy it. The Patriots allowed 58 fewer points than the Giants this season.

Offensively, there has been some concern regarding who Tom Brady will be able to throw to at the tight end position with Rob Gronkowski hurt. People must remember that Aaron Hernandez is the best backup tight end in the NFL.

I’m picking the Patriots to win their fourth Super Bowl 34-16. For more information on Super Bowl XLVI please go to my blog earlier in the week.

Weekend Sports Preview– January 15-16

Ben Roethlisberger (Wikimedia Commons)

No two teams in the National Football League mirror each other more than the Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) and Baltimore Ravens (12-4). Both teams are known for their excellence in defence, but a relatively respectable offense as well. On Saturday afternoon, the two juggernauts will collide in a hard-nosed battle that will have fans wincing (CBS, 2:30PM) in an AFC Divisional Playoff match-up that should be extremely low-scoring, but an excellent football game to say the least.

I’ll be interested in comparing the Ravens’ Ed Reed vs. the Steelers’ Troy Polamalu. The two all-star defenders finished first and second in the NFL in interceptions this year. Reed had 8 and Polamalu had 7. Head-to-head, the Ravens won 17-14 in Pittsburgh on October 3 and the Steelers won 13-10 in Baltimore on December 5. My gut is telling me the Steelers because I feel they have a little more experience on offense, led by two-time Super Bowl Champion Ben Roethlisberger.

Weekend Sports Recap–December 18-19

Michael Vick (Wikimedia Commons)

It is time for me to bow. Dog owners may not like this. But Michael Vick is on a roll. He single handedly beat me in my fantasy football semi-finals yesterday, and left me completely shaking my head. Ok. I also hit my mitten against a post several times in the bar I was at yesterday.

The Eagles’ four touchdowns (three by Vick and one by DeSean Jackson who my fantasy opponent also had)  in the final seven minutes and twenty-eight seconds was jaw dropping and a comeback of the ages. Philadelphia was down 31-10 midway through the fourth quarter and won 38-31. I would hate to be New York Giants punter Matt Dodge today. Dodge kicked to DeSean Jackson on the final play of the game in regulation time that led to the Eagles’ winning touchdown. I, like many, was yelling “kick the damn ball out of bounds.”

Sorry folks. I’m venting. The Eagles comeback is the sole reason I was eliminated from my fantasy football pool, and I am still in a very bad mood.

In happier news, I watched Canada win two bronze medals in bobsledding on the weekend. Lyndon Rush of Sylvan Lake won a bronze in the men’s 4-man competition and Helen Upperton of Calgary and Shelley-Ann Brown of Scarborough, Ontario won bronze in the women’s competition at Lake Placid, New York.

Weekend Sports Preview–December 18-19

Kaillie Humphries (Wikimedia Commons)

At the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, one of the most electrifying moments for Canada was the 1-2 finish in women’s bobsled. Calgary’s Kaillie Humphries won Gold and Calgary’s Helen Upperton won Silver.

Fast forward to the 2010-11 women’s bobsled season and the expectations aren’t as high for the Canadian teams as they were a year ago. Humphries’ Olympic breakwoman Heather Moyse of Summerside, Prince Edward Island ruptured two ankle tendons at the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England and will be sidelined until January. Upperton meanwhile is competing with recognizable agony in her shoulder.

The fourth stage of the Women’s World Cup bobsled season takes place Saturday 12:30PM (www.cbc.ca/sports) from Lake Placid, New York. The favourites are two German sleds led by Cathleen Martini and Sandra Kiriasis along with American Shauna Rohbock.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend–
