This week on 15MOF we recap a very interesting Super Bowl between the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, we discuss the opening weeks of the NHL season and how the Edmonton Oilers are looking and we answer the question: who owns the Phoenix Coyotes?
In the GABBYs: Vincent Lecavalier, David Beckham, the NFL, Ottawa’s CFL team, PED’s and pro sports blackouts. The Punchline this week is OHL ref Joe Monette.
Well it appears that Jimmy Johnson was correct after all. Just days after the former Dallas Cowboys head coach and FOX Sports analyst tweeted that Marc Trestman would be going to the Chicago Bears, Trestman is indeed off to Chicago.
Trestman, who has spent the last five years with the Montreal Alouettes, will try to follow in the footsteps of Bud Grant and Marv Levy rather than Hugh Campbell and Mike Riley.
The Bears are making a strong commitment to offense in the NFC North and hope that Trestman will be able to deliver the same sort of magic with Jay Cutler that he had with Anthony Calvillo.
The Edmonton Eskimos played horrible Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium, losing 38-25 to the Montreal Alouettes.
It was quite possibly their worst first half in quite some time– on offense and defense. The Alouettes scored the first four touchdowns of the football game en route to the easy win.
Anthony Calvillo had a field day, going 22 for 32 and 327 yards passing. He was easily able to find Patrick Lavoie, Brian Bratton, Victor Anderson and S.J. Green, as all four of them waltzed into the end zone.
With the CFL season starting less than two weeks away, it’s time to preview the season. In the first of a four part series, it’s time to take a look at the teams in the Eastern Division.
Montreal Alouettes
The Alouettes are going for a three-peat in 2011. After winning the Grey Cup the last two years, head coach Marc Trestman’s name came up several times over the off-season as a possible candidate at the University of Miami and the Oakland Raiders. Well, Al Davis settled on Hue Jackson, and the Hurricanes on Al Golden.
Trestman has proven a great ability to win with a veteran team, however I feel he did make a couple of key mistakes in terms of strategy on the sidelines last year.
Another key storyline for the Alouettes is regarding the health of quarterback Anthony Calvillo. The three-time CFL MVP is feeling great after undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.
The Alouettes’ most significant off-season signing was cornerback Dwight Anderson from the Calgary Stampeders. The native of Spanish Town, Jamaica was third in the CFL last year with five interceptions.
In the kicking game, Sandro DeAngelis replaces Damon Duval who went to Edmonton. DeAngelis was surprisingly released by Hamilton on May 24.
The Calgary Stampeders have lost one of their top defensive players over the last three years to free agency.
On Wednesday, the Montreal Alouettes announced the signing of cornerback Dwight Anderson.
Anderson was third in the CFL in interceptions last year with five, and led the CFL with two touchdowns from interceptions. The fifth year import from the University of South Dakota also had 49 tackles in 2010.
Originally from Spanish Town, Jamaica, Anderson’s numbers have decreased a little in recent years. At 31 years of age, he had 54 tackles in 2008, 55 tackles in 2009 and only 49 tackles this past year.
Other significant achievements for Anderson while with the Stampeders from 2008-10, was winning the Grey Cup in 2008, being named a Western Division All-Star in 2009 and 2010, and the Stampeders’ most outstanding defensive player in 2009.
After very brutal performances (one from the defense and one from the offense over the last two weeks), the Calgary Stampeders bounced back in a big way from both sides of the football Friday night at McMahon Stadium.
In front of a solid crowd of 31, 167 fans, the Stamps trounced the Montreal Alouettes 46-21 in a battle of two first place teams.
As successfully predicted by Any Sport Any Time’s cricket expert Ron Saywack, the Stamps rebounded. Henry Burris had 412 passing yards–169 to Ken-Yon Rambo and 146 to Romby Bryant.
