Tiger-Cats fire Bellefeuille

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have fired head coach Marcel Bellefeuille.

This firing doesn’t make a significant amount of sense to me by General Manager Bob O’Billovich. The reason is despite the fact that Hamilton had a losing record at 8-10, they did make the playoffs, and advanced to the Eastern Conference Final with a dramatic 52-44 victory over the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final.

It makes me wonder if O’Billovich made up his mind quite some time ago, and didn’t take the playoffs into account in his final decision making process.

So now the question is who will be Bellefeuille’s replacement in Hamilton. One name I think that will be strongly considered is British Columbia offensive-coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine, who played for the Tiger-Cats as a soltback from 1987-1989. Two other possibilities in my opinion are Rich Stubler, who was the defensive co-ordinator in Edmonton last season, and Lions’ defensive co-ordinator Mike Benevides. But don’t be surprised if Chapdelaine and Benevides receive strong consideration for the Lions’ head coaching position if Wally Buono decides just to be a General Manager next season.

Offensive explosion in the Eastern Semi-Final

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Yesterday morning I was at a local bar with a good friend watching about ten NFL games while I had the bartender put the Eastern Division semi-final between the Montreal Alouettes and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on the smaller television in the corner.

Well, after a ton of points were scored, the game should have been on their big screen rather than their little TV.

Every time I looked someone was marching down the field and into the end zone. There was no defense by both teams, as the Tiger-Cats won 52-44 in overtime.

The 96 total points was a CFL playoff record, breaking the 89 points set in 1956 when Montreal defeated Hamilton 48-41 in the second game of the two game total point Eastern Final.

TSN called the game “eastern fireworks”. I think that is a completely fair assessment based on the offensive explosion presented.

But one area that deserves significant question marks is why Tiger-Cats head coach Marcel Bellefeuille decided to go for two points in overtime while leading 50-44. Instead of going for the simple convert, quarterback Kevin Glenn had a two yard pass to Chris Williams. Did Bellefeuille feel a single point wasn’t enough? It worked, but if it hadn’t, there would have been a lot of second guessing in Steeltown.

The Alouettes meanwhile failed to march into the end zone on their overtime possession as Anthony Calvillo had a pass to Brandon Whitaker go incomplete.

Bruce traded to Lions

Arland Bruce III (Bing Images)

The British Columbia Lions, who are winless at 0-5 to start the season have found a premier wide receiver to compliment Geroy Simon.

According to Dave Naylor of TSN, the Tiger-Cats have traded wide receiver Arland Bruce III to the British Columbia Lions for a third round pick in the 2012 CFL draft and a conditional draft choice.

Bruce III was disappointed with his diminished role in Hamilton this season, requested a meeting with head coach Marcel Bellefeuille and general manager Bob O’Billovich. In last week’s 34-26 win over the Montreal Alouettes, Bruce III didn’t receive a catch, despite the fact that quarterback Kevin Glenn had 295 passing yards– including 107 yards to David Stala, 59 yards to Avon Cobourne and 54 yards to rookie Chris Williams.
