It has been quite the tournament for Switzerland at the World Hockey Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.
On Saturday, Switzerland eliminated the United States from gold medal contention with a 3-0 shutout victory. Switzerland will now play Sweden in the gold medal game on Sunday afternoon.
Former Edmonton Oiler goaltender Martin Gerber, who is now playing for Elitserien of the Swedish Elite League, made 26 saves in recording the shutout, while Nino Niederreiter who played this past year with Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the New York Islanders’ American Hockey League affiliate, notched a multi-point game with a goal and an assist.
It was another solid week in the world of sports, and we are once again here to break it all down for you! On this episode of 15 Minutes of Fame: Ryan Smyth’s return to Edmonton and the accompanying controversy, a look at which Free Agents are still looking for work and a thumbs up to the Edmonton Eskimos!

Canada is now off to the semi-finals of the World Junior Hockey Championship.
On Sunday, Brayden Schenn recorded two assists as Canada defeated Switzerland 4-1 in their quarterfinal game in Buffalo.
The win now means Canada will play the United States in the semi-final this evening (5:30pm, TSN).
Expect Mark Visentin to get a second consecutive start. He looked awful on the one Swiss goal that was scored. He didn’t put his right pad up to the post, allowing for an opening for the puck to get by him. Then in the second period, Visentin had a complete mental lapse as he thought there was a Switzerland penalty and went off the ice, when in fact there was a Canadian one. Luckily Visentin’s lapse didn’t cost Canada a goal on that occasion.
Ok folks. He’s only played two regular season games for the Oil.
But I’m telling you Martin Gerber is the best goaltender the Edmonton Oilers have in their system. He beat Colorado Thursday and then made an unbelievable stop last night on a Daniel Alfredsson breakaway, that gave the Oilers momentum and a 4-1 win over Ottawa.
Better than Dubnyk, Khabibulin and Drouin-Deslauriers.
He may have been fourth on the depth chart at the beginning of the season, but even at training camp, I felt Gerber should have been the Oilers go-to-guy.
During Saturday night’s www.anysportanytime.com forum, I felt John Short and his friends (Evan Daum, Geoff Driscoll and Ryan Frankson) could have discussed the most important position in hockey when talking about the Oilers in more detail– the goaltender.
This is one weekend that is marked on every Canadian sports fan’s calendar from coast to coast. On Sunday, the 98th Grey Cup Game will take place at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, and for the second consecutive year the teams will be the Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-8) and Montreal Alouettes (12-6).
This will be the third time that a team from Montreal and a team from Regina would have played in the Grey Cup. In 1931, the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers defeated the Regina Rams 22-0 to win the 19th Grey Cup Championship. It was the first Grey Cup where a forward pass was allowed and the first title game where a point could be scored from a drop kick or place kick. The Wheelers recorded three touchdowns from Pete Jotkus, Kenny Grant and Wally Whitty en route to the shutout.
Then last year, the Montreal Alouettes squeaked out a dramatic 28-27 win. Saskatchewan thought they won it when Alouette kicker Damon Duval missed a last second field goal, but amazingly they had 13 men on the field, and Duval was allowed to rekick, and drained a 33 yard attempt.
