Defencemen are running out for the Oilers to sign

Matt Carle (Rhys Asplundh, Wikimedia Commons)

I think it is fair to say the Edmonton Oilers are running out of elite defencemen on the free agency market to sign.

Last night the Tampa Bay Lightning snagged one defenceman I thought the Oilers should have gone after in Matt Carle.

The Lightning signed Carle to a six year contract worth $33 million. Carle had a respectable season with the Philadelphia Flyers, recording 38 points in 82 games.

But thumbs up to Tambellini for not spending that type of money on Carle.

So who is left? Remember, at this stage of the game the Oilers would be better off with a stay at home defenceman that can play big minutes, rather than one who is very offensive skilled. That is what Justin Schultz will be used for.

The top five free agents available who could fit right into what the Oilers are looking for are Scott Hannan from Calgary, Carlo Colaiacovo from St. Louis, Michal Rozsival of Phoenix, Matt Gilroy from Ottawa and Pavel Kubina from Philadelphia.

The Oilers simply need to sign one more defenceman to get in contention for a playoff spot.

Flames do nothing, Oilers little at the deadline

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

I was expected to be very busy this afternoon writing about a significant number of trades.

The bottom line, there might have been one that I’ll get to later. But living in Alberta, I think it comes as a huge surprise how little the Oilers did and that the Flames did nothing today.

Message to Nikolai Khabibulin, Ales Hemsky, and Ryan Smyth. It’s time to step up. Management has shown confidence in all three of you and it’s time to take your game to the next level.

As for the Flames, it looks like they will continue to battle for a playoff spot. Good news for Flames fans is that Miikka Kiprusoff is reminding you of 2004 and if you get into the playoffs, anything can happen.

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Goals of the Week!

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

As we enter the third month of the NHL season, the beauty goals just keep on coming!

This week’s Goals of the Week list features some slick passing plays, a couple of beauty dekes, an unreal second effort and a long distance give-and-go.

Let’s get right to it!

5. Steven Stamkos

The Tampa Bay Lightning didn’t get off to a great start this season, but Steven Stamkos sure did! Check out this killer give-and-go with Matt Gilroy late in the second period of a loss to the Red Wings. What a snipe!

Alexander Ovechkin (Bruce Bennett, Getty Images)

The Stanley Cup Playoffs continued yesterday with four interesting games. Actually, if you include the Women’s World Hockey Championship in Zurich, Switzerland, I watched five separate games in their entirety, starting at 8am and ending after 11pm, and only missed two goals in the process.

I have already talked about Canada/Finland and the Tampa Bay Lightning/Pittsburgh Penguins game in my other posts, so I’m going to focus on the other three here.

The Washington Capitals eliminated the New York Rangers in the series 4-1, with a 3-1 win Saturday afternoon in Washington. Alexander Ovechkin scored an unbelievable third period goal, as he went by Ranger defender Marc Staal to put Washington up by three.

In this game, Capitals’ defenceman Mike Green got hit in the head by a Matt Gilroy slapshot, knocking two screws out of his helmet. Green, who did not return, should welcome the time off now, because he has had concussion issues throughout the season. It is a bit of a shame because Green has been significantly more defensively consistent in the Playoffs, as he is a +3, to go along with his five playoff points.
