Arian Foster (AJ Guel, Wikimedia Commons)
I’m smoking hot folks. Last week I went 10-3 for the third straight week to improve to 79-37 on the year. If you’re not reading my weekly predictions blog, what is wrong with you?
Here are my week nine picks:
11am
Dallas over Seattle– The Seahawks are just lousy on the road, where they’re 1-3. I have become a hue fan of Cowboys’ running back DeMarco Murray, and I just don’t think Seattle can stop him.
Kansas City over Miami–The Chiefs have now won four straight after losing their first three. The Dolphins are very close to winning their first game of the season. They will play the Chiefs tight, but Kansas City will win by less than a touchdown.
New Orleans over Tampa Bay–The Saints are playing very inconsistent right now. They have lost to the Rams and Buccaneers on the road. But at home, they’re 5-0, and should be able to beat the Buccaneers, even though Tampa Bay has their number one running back, LeGarrette Blount back in the lineup.
Atlanta over Indianapolis–The Colts will go to 0-9. This one might be over at half time.
NY Jets over Buffalo–In a game that could go either way, Shonn Greene has combined for 269 yards over the last three games, and is playing at a very high level.
Houston over Cleveland–Even without wide receiver Andre Johnson, the Texans have many offensive weapons. Last week, Arian Foster came through with 112 rushing yards.
San Francisco over Washington–If the Redskins can’t score on the Bills, they won’t get many, if any, against the 49ers.

Finally, the National Hockey League in Winnipeg returns this weekend as the Jets host the Montreal Canadiens at the MTS Center (Sunday, CBC, 3PM). When the Phoenix Coyotes moved to Winnipeg on July 1, 1996, Manitoba sports fans have been circling this date on their calendar. Fifteen years later and they finally have their wish. Players that will become household Jets’ names will include Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien, Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler and Evander Kane.
The Canadiens (0-1) meanwhile got off to a slow start as they lost 2-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs Thursday night at the Air Canada Centre. James Reimer was brilliant in posting a shutout.

We’re now heading into a very interesting week of the season–the final week on the schedule before the bye weeks start next weekend.
Last week I went 10-6 and am 30-18 overall.
Here are my week four picks:
11am
Chicago over Carolina–Brian Urlacher will have too many answers for Cam Newton.
Buffalo over Cincinnati–The Bills at 4-0? Yes folks this isn’t 1990.
Tennessee over Cleveland–In a game that could literally go either way, I have been very impressed how Matt Hasselbeck has played with the Titans so far.
Detroit over Dallas–The Lions at 4-0? Yes folks this could happen, and it isn’t…wait the Lions have always sucked.
Kansas City over Minnesota–The Donovan McNabb experiment in Minnesota isn’t working. I’m even starting Matt Cassel in a fantasy football pool.

Patrick Willis (Broken Sphere, Wikimedia Commons)
Another full slate of games are scheduled in the NFL today. To date I have an overall record of 20-12. Let’s see how I do in week 3.
11AM
San Francisco over Cincinnati–The 49ers defensive line has impressed me significantly to date. Navorro Bowman, Patrick Willis and Ray McDonald have been excellent for a San Francisco team that is very capable of winning the NFC West.
Carolina over Jacksonville–The Panthers played the Packers tough last week, and will beat the Jaguars if they have a similar performance today.
Detroit over Minnesota–If the Lions’ defense can limit Adrian Peterson to under 80 yards, the Lions will get a victory.

Matt Ryan (Wikimedia Commons)
I just watched an exciting football game tonight.
If you liked offense, the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons put on quite the show, with the Falcons winning 35-31. Both teams are now 1-1.
The Falcons were led by tight end Tony Gonzalez (83 yards receiving and two touchdowns), Michael Turner (114 yards rushing, touchdown) and Matt Ryan who had four touchdown passes.
The Falcons also spoiled Michael Vick’s first return to Atlanta since spending time in prison.
I’m very impressed in the early going by the Detroit Lions. On Sunday, the Lions had four touchdown passes from Matt Stafford in a 48-3 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs got horrible news in the contest, as it looks like running back Jamaal Charles is out for the season with a torn ACL.
The Lions join the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, and Green Bay Packers at 2-0.
Finally the upset of the weekend in my opinion came in Tennessee, as the Titans shocked the Baltimore Ravens 26-13. But it was the passing game, and not the rushing game that beat the Ravens. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 358 yards, 125 to Kenny Britt. Both teams are now 1-1.

Matt Hasselbeck (Chad Riley, Getty Images)
Here are my Week 1 picks:
Thursday:
Green Bay over New Orleans– Packers will win a shootout and use home field advantage in their favour.
Sunday 11am:
Chicago over Atlanta–The Bears defense is among the best in the game.
Cleveland over Cincinnati– The Bengals have too many questions on offense.
Buffalo over Kansas City–The Bills have a legitimate shot if Matt Cassel isn’t 100%.
Philadelphia over St. Louis–The Eagles will romp the Rams.
Detroit over Tampa Bay–The Lions will win a game where both teams may not score a combined ten points.
Tennessee over Jacksonville–Matt Hasselbeck makes his Titans debut and should do better than most people think.

Tarvaris Jackson (Bing Images)
The Seattle Seahawks will have a new look offense in 2011.
General Manager John Schneider and Head Coach Pete Carroll have elected to go with a little bit more speed.
On Friday the news was made official that the Seahawks had signed quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and wide receiver Sidney Rice. Jackson hasn’t seen much action the last two years because he has been the backup in Minnesota to Brett Favre.
He did have an effective rookie season in 2009 however, completing 88 of his 149 passes for 1056 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.
Rice, meanwhile, didn’t play for the first half of last season due to hip surgery. It was in 2009 where he became Brett Favre’s primary target, leading the Vikings with 83 catches and 1312 receiving yards. Rice’s contract is five years worth $41 million, of which $18.5 million is guaranteed.
With the decision to go with Jackson at quarterback, the Tennessee Titans picked up Matt Hasselbeck from Seattle. Hasselbeck, 35, will be the undisputed number one quarterback in Tennessee with Vince Young going to Philadelphia to back up Michael Vick and the retirement of Kerry Collins.
In another key signing Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs have signed Steve Breaston from the Arizona Cardinals. The addition of Breaston should compliment Dwayne Bowe in Kansas City quite nicely and offer quarterback Matt Cassel a second viable offensive threat.

Marshawn Lynch (Ted Warren, Associated Press)
This is the right time for me to blow my own horn.
I successfully predicted the Seattle Seahawks to win on Saturday. So how did they beat the Saints 41-36? A combination of excellence through the air and on the ground. Matt Hasselbeck was spectacular, posting a quarterback rating of 113, and throwing four touchdowns for 272 yards. Hasselbeck found his tight end John Carlson twice and wide receivers Brandon Stokley and Mike Williams each once.

Peyton Manning (Jed Jacobsohn, Getty Images)
I’ve realized something. It is difficult to make predictions in the National Football League when I am trying to figure all 32 teams in the league out and late in the season, when teams that are in the playoffs start resting their talent and those who are out are looking at possible prospects for next year.
I have now had two straight 6-10 weeks. My overall record now is 147-93.
One last week to go folks. Here are my picks for Week 17:
11am
Atlanta over Carolina–The Falcons win the NFC South with a win, so expect them to dress their starters throughout.
Pittsburgh over Cleveland–Like the Falcons, the Steelers will probably dress their starters regularly because a win guarantees them first place in the AFC North. Expect a regular dose of Ben Roethlisberger and Rashard Mendenhall.

Happy New Year to you all!
This weekend we will see great hockey and football action across the continent.
Here are all the events I will be keeping an eye on:
Saturday–3pm–Rose Bowl–Texas Christian vs. Wisconsin @ Pasadena, California–TSN–The Texas Christian Horned Frogs will try to be one of only two NCAA Football teams in 2010 to finish the year undefeated. The Mountain West champion Horned Frogs are led by quarterback Andy Dalton who had 26 touchdowns and six interceptions and passed for 2638 yards this year. The Wisconsin Badgers are 4th in the country, and their only loss was a 34-24 defeat to Michigan State on October 2. In three of their wins this past year, they scored 70 or more points.

This weekend we will receive an answer to a question that we have been waiting anxiously for all fall– who will travel to Regina for the Western Division semi-final?
Currently the Eskimos have the upper hand. They control their own destiny. It’s simple. Win and they’re in. However, a loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders tomorrow night at Mosaic Stadium in Regina (5pm, TSN) coupled with a B.C. Lion win tomorrow in Hamilton (12pm, TSN), means the Lions are going to the playoffs.
My gut feeling is that both teams will win. But my gut hasn’t been very accurate lately. I was wrong with the World Series and am only 14-13 over the last two weeks in picking NFL games, and I’m not even going against the spread.

Tiger Woods (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
I won’t be able to get up in the middle of the night this weekend to watch golf (have a darn head cold that has got in the way), but will get up as early as I possible can the next three mornings.
The Ryder Cup is this weekend from Newport, Wales. The best golfers from Europe play the best golfers from the United States in a fourball and foursome competition Friday and Saturday, then on Sunday, there are exciting head-to-head singles matches for spectators to enjoy.
But, amazingly, NBC’s coverage on Saturday will be on tape delay.
Here are the events I’ll be watching this weekend.

Kim Clijsters (Andrew Huse, Wikimedia Commons)
Thank-you tennis gods.
On the weekend I had a hockey pool, which I thought would make me miss the Men’s final at New York’s Flushing Meadows. But it got rained out yesterday, and I should be able to watch first seed Rafael Nadal of Spain take on third seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia this afternoon. This will be Nadal’s first U.S. Open Final. He is going for his ninth grand slam title having won the French Open five times,Wimbledon twice and Australian Open once. A victory would also mean he will join elite company by joining Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, Rod Laver, Don Budge, Fred Perry and Roy Emerson as the only players with a career grand slam.
