Snedeker and Cabrera lead after round three of the Masters

Saturday, April 13th, 2013

On Monday evening I was talking with Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun, who is in Augusta, Georgia this week as a fan at the Masters.

Eric asked me who I thought was going to win because he thought he would put some money on someone. Without hesitation, I replied “Brandt Snedeker”.

Snedeker was brilliant on Saturday down the stretch. He finished up with three birdies in the last six holes in shooting a three-under 69. Snedker, who has won already this year at the historic AT& T Pebble Beach Pro-Am near San Francisco, will have to beat a two-time Major champion to prove my flawless accuracy.

That is because Angel Cabrera of Argentina is tied for the lead with Snedeker at -7. Others in contention for the first major championship of the season are a trio of Australians. Veteran Adam Scott is at -6, followed by Jason Day and Marc Leishman at -5. Matt Kuchar of the United States cannot be counted out as well at -4. Tiger Woods meanwhile is lurking at -3.

Woods win at WGC makes him favourite for the Masters

Tiger Woods (Angela George, Wikimedia Commons)

Tiger Woods came out with a statement victory this past weekend in Florida. At the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championships in Miami, Woods shot a -19.

At one time Woods was in fact a -21 before recording two bogeys on the final three holes.

I know Hunter Mahan, Brandt Snedeker, Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar have also had solid starts to the 2013 PGA season, but none of them can beat Tiger when he is at his very best.

Woods was so dominant this weekend, he had 27 birdies in 72 holes of golf. That is averaging one birdie every three holes. He also seldom had a lead that was ever in doubt as of day two. Graeme McDowell was close at times, at Steve Stricker had a good finish, but it was not close enough.

Kuchar beats Mahan at World Match Play Golf Championships

It was an all-American final Sunday at the World Match Play Golf Championship in Tucson, Arizona on Sunday.

American Matt Kuchar defeated Hunter Mahan on the 17 hole to win his second significant tournament in the last two years. Kuchar won the 2012 Players Championship by two strokes.

Kuchar, who improved to 15-3 at the World Match Play Championships, looked very comfortable in the Tucson desert, despite the cold winds and frigid temperatures. Kuchar and Mahan each played Sunday with a toque.

Kuchar, the sixth seed in the Ben Hogan bracket, defeated Hiroyuki Fujita of Japan in the first round 3 & 2, Sergio Garcia of Spain in the second round 2 & 1, Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium 4 & 3 in the third round, Robert Garrigus of the United States in the quarterfinals 3 & 2, and Jason Day of Australia 4 & 3 in the semi-finals.

Weekend Sports Preview–May 12-13–NHL, NBA, MLB, Tennis, Players’ Championship, World Hockey Championships & WHL

Alexander Ovechkin (Wikimedia Commons)

Three game sevens (and possibly a fourth) will dominate my sports viewing this weekend.

In the NHL, there is a game seven in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. This will be a battle of Alexander Ovechkin versus Henrik Lundqvist. Despite limited ice time, Ovechkin leads the Capitals in scoring with nine points, but will have to get by Hart Trophy nominee Lundqvist to move on to the Eastern Conference Final for the first time in his career. The game can be seen on CBC tonight at 5:30pm.

In the NBA, there are two game sevens, both involving the Los Angeles teams. Tonight the Los Angeles Lakers host the Denver Nuggets in game seven of the Western Conference Quarterfinal  tonight (TSN2, 8:30pm). Questions are surrounding the health of Lakers star Kobe Bryant who played with the stomach flu in game six on Thursday. Afterwards, he was not happy with Pau Gasol for his lack of  effort and had no problem telling him so.

Then tomorrow the Memphis Grizzlies host the Los Angeles Clippers (ABC, 11am) in game seven of another Western Conference Semi-Final. Like the Nuggets, the Grizzlies were once down 3-1 in the series but have clawed their way back to force a game seven. Last night in Los Angeles, the Grizzlies won game six 90-88 on Marc Gasol’s 23 points.

Weekend Sports Preview–February 25 & 26–Scotties Tournament of Hearts, NHL, ATP, World Golf Matchplay Championships

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

This is a big weekend in Alberta curling. Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin will try to win Alberta’s first Canadian Women’s Curling Championship on Alberta soil in Red Deer. She has the capability and overall team skill. Nedohin just has to put it together and notch three victories against Team Quebec, Team Manitoba and Team British Columbia.

A major reason for Alberta’s success this week has been the solid play of their overall team. Lead Laine Peters was second to Manitoba’s Dawn Askin in overall shooting percentage (87%). Alberta’s Jessica Mair was second among seconds at 83% and Alberta’s Beth Iskiw was second among thirds at  84%.

USA still leads Internationals 7-5

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Jim Furyk (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)

The United States remain in the lead of the International squad 7-5 after Day Two of the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Australia.

On Thursday (Friday in Melbourne), the Americans and the International team split the six four ball matches.

Two American teams have impressed me significantly to date. Yesterday I was very impressed with Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson. They won again today defeating Ernie Els of South Africa and Ryo Ishikawa of Japan 3 & 1.

I was also very impressed with Jim Furyk, the 2o03 United States Open Champion, who won his second consecutive match by pairing up with Phil Mickelson. The duo defeated Australian Adam Scott and South Korean Kyung-tae Kim 2 & 1. But the real reason the Americans got the point was because of Furyk’s putting, which was terrific in extremely windy conditions.

Once again, Tiger Woods lost. This time with Dustin Johnson to the Australian duo of Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley 1 up. Woods is the only American not to get on the scoreboard yet.

In other action, the American duo of Steve Stricker and Matt Kuchar defeated Y.E. Yang of South Korea and Robert Allenby of Australia 4 & 3. Australian Geoff Ogilvy, with a terrible mustache, and South Korean K.J. Choi defeated Bill Haas and Nick Watney 1 up and the South African duo of Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen defeated Hunter Mahan and David Toms 2 & 1.

Stricker shoots three eagles in winning Memorial

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Steve Stricker (Bing Images)

We now know who is the best American golfer today.

Nope, it’s not Tiger Woods and it isn’t Phil Mickelson either.

On Sunday Steve Stricker passed Mickelson to move into number four in the World Golf Rankings.

In winning the Memorial Tournament, a course in Columbus, founded by Jack Nicklaus, Stricker shot a -16 to defeat Matt Kuchar and Brandt Jobe by a stroke.

But what everyone will remember from the 2011 Memorial tournament will be Stricker’s remarkable shot making. He recorded an ace on the eighth on Friday and then followed that with two eagles on Saturday.

Stricker, at 43 years of age, might have won the most significant singles golf tournament of his career on Sunday.  I would give the Memorial Tournament equal status to the Western Open which he won in 1996 with the Northern Trust Open which he won in 2010.

Unusual high scores at the Byron Nelson this past weekend

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Keegan Bradley (Stan Badz, PGA Tour)

In analyzing the golf scores this past weekend I was very surprised to see the scores were so high this past week at the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Fort Worth, Texas.

American rookie Keegan Bradley shot a three under par and defeated American Ryan Palmer in a playoff.

American Joe Ogilvie (-2), Japan’s Ryuji Imada (-2) and Australia’s Jason Day (-1) were the only other three golfers to shoot under par.

Bradley’s -3 was the highest score to win the tournament since Bruce Lietzke won in 1981 when he shot +1. Also, just two years ago, South African Rory Sabbatini won the Byron Nelson by shooting a -19.

Wow. So how did the Byron Nelson Championship play more like a U.S. Open Golf course than the Bob Hope?
