Weekend Sport Preview–September 22 & 23–CFL, NFL, MLB

Saturday, September 22nd, 2012

One of the most intriguing stories heading into the weekend, is how the Calgary Stampeders’ running game will respond to Saskatchewan Roughriders’ head coach Cory Chamblin’s guarantee this week that the Riders will limit Jon Cornish to under 100 yards.

I really liked the Stampeders’ response actually. Both Cornish and John Hufnagel (Calgary’s head coach and general manager) both responded with the statement that all they are concerned about is winning football games and they could care less about statistics.

Week 9 NFL Notes

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Matt Moore (Greg Keene, Wikimedia Commons)

The biggest surprise from the weekend came from the Miami Dolphins who absolutely hammered the Kansas City Chiefs 31-3. I don’t think anybody who follows the NFL expected a tropical Florida crush in the heart of Missouri, especially after the Chiefs were impressive the previous week in defeating the San Diego Chargers 23-20 in overtime. Quarterback Matt Moore had his finest game of the season, as he threw for three touchdown passes, 244 yards and a quarterback rating of 147.5.

The Dolphins won their first game of the year (1-7), and with all of the talk that Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden taking over from Tony Sparano, it looks like Sparano has saved his job for another week. The Chiefs meanwhile fell to 4-4.

But week nine was about the marquee matchups.

If you liked offense, the Green Bay Packers continued their unbeaten run (8-0) in defeating the San Diego Chargers 45-38, in a game where both teams combined for 83 points. Aaron Rodgers had four touchdowns, and threw for 247 yards, including 105 to Jordy Nelson. Even though Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (4-4) had four touchdowns himself and 385 yards passing, he had three interceptions to Rodgers’ zero.

There were also some very interesting defensive battles Sunday.

Dolphins acquire Bush

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Reggie Bush (Bing Images)

The Miami Dolphins have acquired running back Reggie Bush from the New Orleans Saints for safety Jonathan Amaya and an undisclosed pick.

Bush, who was scheduled to make $11.8 million under his old contract with the Saints, signed a 2 year deal worth $9.75 million with the Dolphins, with a $2.5 million signing bonus.

Bush couldn’t seem to be comfortable throughout his career in New Orleans. He regularly shared running back duties. Last year it was with Christopher Ivory and Pierre Thomas.

But ironically, don’t expect him to be carrying the majority of the load in Miami either, especially if the Dolphins look to re-sign either Ricky Williams or Ronnie Brown.

One area where Bush is strong is his versatility, as he is regularly able to catch the ball in short yardage situations. He actually has more receiving yards in his career (2142) than rushing yards (2090).

Amaya played in ten games in his rookie season for the Dolphins in 2010, and collected fifteen solo tackles.

As for the quarterback position, the Dolphins signed Matt Moore from the Carolina Panthers today to a two year deal worth $5 million. He will be competing with Chad Henne for the number one spot in Miami.

Weekend NFL picks

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Jake Delhomme (Mark Duncan, Associated Press)

Before I start in this new segment, I need you all to trust me. I did predict the New Orleans Saints to win Thursday. Now here are my predictions for the other games this weekend. I predict games head-to-head, not against the spread.

Here are my Sunday picks:

11am matchups

Tennessee over Oakland– Titan RB Chris Johnson should be able to run a Raider D.

NY Giants over Carolina–Despite a touchdown to interception ratio of 8:2, Panthers QB Matt Moore didn’t impress me much with his game calling a season ago, and will be pressured by the Giants D.
