Team Canada is back at the .500 mark in women’s soccer at the 2012 Olympic Games.

On Saturday, Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia scored twice in a convincing 3-0 win over South Africa. With the victory, Canada improves to 1-1 and are in third place in Pool F behind Japan and Sweden, who each have a win and a tie.

According to the London 2012 website, Melissa Tancredi of Ancaster, Ontario opened the scoring for Canada only seven minutes into the contest. Like Sinclair, Tancredi has two goals in the tournament.

According to Canadian men’s head coach John Herdman:

“We said winning was the only option today. We hopefully got what we needed. We could have had more, but that’s football sometimes.”

Like the game against Japan however, Team Canada did not finish the game without a significant injury concern. Robyn Gayle of Mississauga, Ontario went down which appeared to be a lower body injury and did not return. Defender Candice Chapman was injured against Japan and did not play against South Africa. Meanwhile, Emily Zurrer of Crofton, British Columbia hasn’t played in the tournament to date due to an injury.

Canada loses 2-1 to Japan in Olympic soccer opener–Should McLeod be blamed?

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Team Canada got off to a slow start in the women’s soccer tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Nahomi Kawasumi and Aya Miyama each scored for Japan in a 2-1 win over Team Canada in the opening play of Group F action.

The Canadians got off to a solid start and played very competitive with the Japanese for the first half of the first half, but Kawasumi’s goal gave Japan definite momentum. Then late in the first half, Canadian goaltender Erin McLeod came out of her net, misplayed the soccer ball and Miyama scored an impressive header.

Questions are arising whether or not McLeod should have come out of her net to play the soccer ball. Three Canadian defenders were there in pretty good position but allowed Miyama to get her head on the ball.

In the second half, Japan nearly made the score 3-0, but Canadian defender Lauren Sesselmann made a brilliant defensive play to prevent the Japanese from scoring. Then moments later Melissa Tancredi of Hamilton pulled the Canadians within one.

When Canadians watch the 2012 Olympic Games in London, they’ll be watching the Canadian women’s soccer team.

On Friday night at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, Team Canada qualified for their consecutive Olympic Games with a 3-1 win over Mexico.

Christine Sinclair, probably the best  women’s soccer player in the world, scored twice and Melissa Tancredi of Hamilton, Ontario scored the game winning goal.

Team Canada will be joined in the tournament by the United States who earlier on Friday defeated Costa Rica 3-0 in a shutout victory. The Americans despite being outplayed by Costa Rica in the first half.

Team Canada will be looking for redemption at the 2012 Games. Four years ago at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Canada lost 2-1 to the United States in overtime in the quarterfinals. Then at last year’s World Cup, Team Canada played very poor and finished dead last in the tournament.

Other countries that have qualified to date are Great Britain, Japan, North Korea, South Africa, Cameroon, Brazil, Colombia, Sweden and France.  The Olympic tournament starts July 25.
