Seahawks acquire Harvin from Vikings Monday

The Seattle Seahawks are once again counting on a former Minnesota Viking.

On Monday, the Seahawks acquired wide receiver Percy Harvin from the Vikings for their first, seventh and middle round draft pick.

Harvin led the Vikings with 677 receiving yards in 2012 and provides quarterback Russell Wilson another formidable deep threat to accompany another former Viking in Sidney Rice and former Fighting Irish product Golden Tate.

The Seahawks weren’t the only team in the NFC West however to significantly improve at the wide receiver position on Monday. The San Francisco 49ers acquired Anquan Boldin from the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens on Monday for a sixth round draft pick.

Boldin, who will now be joining his third NFL team (has also played with the Arizona Cardinals) was unwilling to restructure his contract in Baltimore.

Ravens and 49ers win playoff classics

Sunday, January 13th, 2013

It was simply an outstanding day for the National Football League on Saturday as the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens won playoff classics.

In San Francisco’s 45-31 win over the Green Bay Packers last night, Colin Kaepernick set a NFL record for most rushing yards in a playoff game by a quarterback. In rushing for 181 yards, Kaepernick set a record set by Michael Vick, who rushed for 119 yards in an Atlanta playoff win over St. Louis in 2005.

Frank Gore had 119 yards  rushing and Michael Crabtree had 119 yards receiving.

However, the Ravens victory over the Broncos was remarkable, with Baltimore winning 38-35 in double overtime. In what should be considered one of the greatest games of all-time, five times the game was tied before Justin Tucker kicked a game winning field goal of 47 yards in double overtime.

Edwards signs contract with the 49ers

Braylon Edwards (John Kusinski, Wikimedia Commons)

Heading into the 2011 NFL regular season, there was a belief by many that the New York Jets would be significantly better on offense with the inclusion of Plaxico Burress from the New York Giants.

Now after being unable to re-sign Braylon Edwards, who signed a one-year contract worth $3.5 million with the San Francisco 49ers, I’m not so sure.

Don’t forget Mark Sanchez hasn’t won a Super Bowl yet. I know the Jets did beat the New England Patriots at Foxboro in the playoffs last year, but the Jets then lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship.

If I was Sanchez, I would rather have Edwards as my number two target rather than Burress, who don’t forget, is just coming out of prison.

The Patriots, in my opinion are now the team in the AFC East to beat, with the Jets battling the Miami Dolphins for second place.

As for Edwards, who had 904 yards receiving and seven touchdowns last season, he will become a viable target for 49er quarterback Alex Smith who now has a strong third option at his disposal. Edwards will join tight end Vernon Davis and wide receiver Michael Crabtree, on a 49er squad more than capable of winning the NFC West.
