The Edmonton Eskimos will look to improve on their 1-0 record when they play the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium Sunday at 5pm on TSN.
However, even though both teams got into the win column last week, I was much more impressed with Saskatchewan than Edmonton.
The Roughriders completely dominated the Tiger-Cats in recording a 43-16 victory. The Eskimos have struggled mightily over the last few years in Regina and I expect most the same this weekend.
One thing the Eskimos do have going for them right now is their overall team defense. Edmonton has a chance if they force Darian Durant to be as disorganized as Ricky Ray was last week.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching:
Saturday–Women’s Wimbledon Final–(3) Agnieszka Radwanska–POL vs. (6) Serena Williams–USA–TSN–7am–There is a possibility this tennis match may not even take place at all. Radwanska, according to the Associated Press, has a serious respiratory illness right now and was forced to cancel her press conference today because of her health condition. Williams has the 2-0 advantage head to head, including an easy 6-4, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Wimbledon. With the win, Radwanska will move into the world’s number one ranking.

Michelle Wie (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The Royal Mayfair Golf and Country Club will be hosting most of the world’s top ladies golfers in 2013.
Unlike the PGA Tour, whose very best rarely come to Canada, the LPGA Tour rarely has that problem.
So expect to see world number one Yani Tseng, Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Sun-Young Yoo, Se Ri Pak and Ai Miyazato.
The 2012 Canadian Women’s Open will take place in Vancouver.
The Royal Mayfair Golf and Country Club last hosted the Canadian Women’s Open in 2007. That year the winner was Mexican great Lorena Ochoa.
Ochoa retired in 2010.
Another interesting fact about the Canadian Women’s Open is that no Canadian has won the event since Jocelyne Bourassa of Shawinigan, Quebec won at the Montreal Municipal Golf Club in 1973. The event also had major status from 1979-2000.

Michelle Wie (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
I’m going to be away from a computer this weekend, so here is an early weekend sports preview.
In women’s golf, the LPGA will make a stop in Canada for the only time this year, in Mirabel, Quebec. The CN Canadian Women’s Open will take place just outside of Montreal. Last year, Michelle Wie was the victor at the St. Charles Golf and Country Club in Winnipeg.
Wie defeated Kristy McPherson, Suzann Pettersen, Jee Young Lee and Jiyai Shin by three strokes. It has been a struggle in 2011 for Wie however, as she hasn’t had a top ten finish since the Sybase Match Play Championship in May.
World number one Yani Tseng, the British Open Champion and LPGA Championship winner tees off tomorrow at 6:40am MT, while Wie tees off at 6:50am. Canadian golf legend, Lorie Kane, a strong supporter of Edmonton’s Prospect Magazine, tees off at 6:30am Thursday.
The weekend coverage can be seen on CBC at noon Saturday and Sunday.
Here are the other events I’ll be keeping an eye on:

Isabelle Beisiegel, Bing Images
The Canadian Golf Tour is now in the headlines.
On Friday, Isabelle Beisiegel of Montreal became the first female golfer ever to qualify for a men’s professional golf tour.
Ok, it is only the Canadian Golf Tour, not the Nationwide Tour and PGA Tour, but the mere fact that Beisiegel finished tied for ninth place in the Canadian Tour’s Spring Qualifying School in Parksville, British Columbia should be positively recognized.
The Canadian Golf Tour is simply no pushover. Players that have played the tour in the past include 2003 Masters Champion Mike Weir, 2004 British Open Champion Todd Hamilton, and 2005 U.S. Open Champion Michael Campbell. Other high profile names include Steve Stricker, Stephen Ames, Stuart Appleby, Chris DiMarco, Nick Watney, Paul Casey, D.A. Points and Chez Reavie.

LPGA star Natalie Gulbis in a bikini (Bing Images)
Well, I won’t discuss football here because John and I have already discussed the Eskimos and Stampeders in length, while Brian Swane has blogged about Canada’s devastating loss to Lithuania yesterday morning at the World Basketball Championships in Turkey.
So, that leaves me discussing about golf– and the CN Canadian Women’s Open yesterday in Winnipeg.
The tournament was won by Michelle Wie. The 20 year-old Hawaiian won her second LPGA event. Lorie Kane, a previous Prospect Magazine “Words from the Next Level” Contributor finished tied for 11th, her best showing on tour in 2010.
But I will remember the 2010 CN Canadian Women’s Open because a quote from one of Canada’s most famous broadcasting personalities.
While watching Hawaiian Michelle Wie win, CBC’s Ron MacLean who was the head broadcaster yesterday, said the following:
“Statistics are like bikinis. They reveal a lot, but don’t reveal everything.”
Ok, his comment might have been risky. If he said it in the 1970′s when the feminist movement was in full swing, there might have been a huge uproar. But I thought it was a little funny. I would like to know what your thoughts are? Did MacLean cross the line here or did he put a smile on your face?

The World Basketball Championships takes center stage this weekend from Turkey. Canada is playing its round robin games in Izmir, a city of about 2.7 million people on the western part of the region.
Canada is led by Joel Anthony of the Miami Heat and Andy Rautins, the Syracuse product who was recently drafted by the New York Knicks. Edmonton’s Jermaine Bucknor, who plays professionally in France for Clermont will be counted on to provide valuable minutes off the bench.
Canada’s first game in the World Championship goes tomorrow morning against Lebanon, a team that beat Canada in a tuneup game 88-76 earlier in the week. The game can be seen on TSN2 at 9:30am MT.
Then on Sunday, Canada will face the powerful Lithuanians, the co-favourite with Spain in Group D (TSN2 at 7am). When Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union, the majority of basketball players that participated for the powerful USSR in international basketball events came from the Lithuanian region. As an independent country, Lithuania has won the bronze medal at three Summer Olympic Games in 1992 (Barcelona), 1996 (Atlanta), and 2000 (Sydney). They also won the 2003 European Basketball Championships in Sweden. (more…)
