Tiger Woods (Angela George, Wikimedia Commons)

The leaderboard is exciting at the 2012 U.S. Open. Jim Furyk, Tiger Woods and David Toms who are all major winners from the past are tied for the lead at golf’s second major of the year at -1. They are the only golfers in the field to not only break par, but be even or better.

Furyk, who is playing with Woods’ former caddie Mike “Fluff” Cowan, shot a 1-under par, the third best score of the day.

A major story from the second round however was the play of 17 year-old amateur Beau Hossler, who remarkably had the lead for a short period of time in the second round, before struggling on the front eight. Still, he did make a remarkable chip in on the seventh hole to stay in contention.

Television coverage will get under way on NBC at 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Woods parts ways with Williams

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

It looks like caddie Steve Williams will be working significantly more with Australian golf star Adam Scott in the future.

On Wednesday, Tiger Woods parted ways with Williams, his caddie for the last twelve years. Over that time, Williams was on Woods’ bag for 13 of his 14 major titles.

Woods did not report who would replace Williams and when he was planning to return to golf. Williams, from New Zealand, had worked with Scott at the U.S. Open, British Open and AT&T National (third place finish) in 2011.

According to ESPN, Woods apparently approved of Williams’ request to caddie for Scott while he was hurt, but then later changed his mind.

Williams’ net worth is estimated at $20 million.

This is the second time in Woods’ career he has made a caddie change. Mike “Fluff” Cowan, had been Woods’ caddie from 1996-99 and was his caddie when he won his first major golf tournament in 1997 at the Masters. Woods apparently got rid of Cowan because according to the Washington Post, Cowan revealed the salary Woods paid him. Since 1999, Cowan has been Jim Furyk’s caddie.
