Underwood excited as Predators beat Flames 5-3

There is a strong possibility that American country music star Carrie Underwood was a happy woman last night.

Not only did she perform in Richmond, Virginia, but her husband, Mike Fisher, the Nashville Predators centre scored two goals in a 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames.

On Underwood’s twitter account, she stated, “twas a great night indeed!…back home the hubby scored TWO goals!”

It was also a great night for the NHL as anytime you have Underwood tweeting about hockey, it is a great thing.

The Predators also had a strong night from Martin Erat (one goal and two assists), while defencemen Roman Josi and Kevin Klein had two assists each. Klein and rookie defenceman Victor Bartley of Ottawa, Ontario were each a +3.

The Flames lost despite notching two shorthanded goals in the first period from Mark Giordano and Blake Comeau.

Weekend Sports Preview–NHL Playoffs, NBA Playoffs, MLB and World Women’s Hockey Championship

Roberto Luongo (Matt Boulton, Wikimedia Commons)

The tension in Vancouver right now must be astronomical. Sunday night, the Vancouver Canucks will try to avoid becoming only the fourth team in NHL history to blow a 3-0 deficit in the Stanley Cup Playoffs as they travel to Chicago to take on their arch-nemesis, the Chicago Blackhawks (Game Six, Sunday, 5:30pm, CBC). They have two chances to prevent history, but the tension should be significantly more if they have to go back to Vancouver for game seven.

If Chicago wasn’t in Vancouver’s head to begin the series, they certainly are now. That’s what happens when one team beats another by a combined score of 12-2 in 120 minutes of hockey action.

Roberto Luongo needs to simply be better as well. He had a save percentage of .786 in Game four and a save percentage of .667 in Game five. That’s what happens when you give up ten goals on forty shots. But, according to TSN, Canucks’ head coach Alain Vigneault hasn’t given up on Luongo just yet. He’s giving Luongo the Game six start.

But Luongo has not been the only Canuck off his game. The Sedin twins have been a combined  -9 over the last two games.

And I’m sticking to it – 15 minutes of fame with Jim and Geoffrey

Monday, February 21st, 2011

It’s 15 Minutes of Fame for this week and Jim is in Mexico so it makes him a little hard to hear!

This week the boys talk a lot about the National Hockey League’s trade deadline. There have been lots of trades and the boys wonder if the Edmonton Oilers are going to get in on any of them.

Then in the GABBYs: On the good side – the resurgence of the Calgary Flames, the National Football League enters into mediated negotiations with the NFL players association and Peter Forsberg retires gracefully.

On the bad side: Peter Forsberg retires! Tiger Woods can’t do anything right and will the Canadian Soccer Association please pay the women players?

Check it out!

Always space for Underwood at Any Sport Any Time

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

Carrie Underwood (Keith Hinkle, Wikimedia Commons)

One of the most ridiculous bans in the media took place this past week in our nation’s capital.

After the Mike Fisher deal to Nashville from Ottawa for a first round draft pick and a conditional pick, KISS FM in Ottawa announced they will ban Fisher’s girlfriend and country western superstar Carrie Underwood from the airwaves.

Obviously, the executives at KISS FM aren’t significant hockey fans. They didn’t seem to realize that the deal made by Ottawa Senators’ General Manager Bryan Murray was strong for Ottawa. Not everyday you get two draft picks for a player who is -18, struggling mightily defensively, and on the downswing of his career when you are obviously required to rebuild.

Ok, I had to go on Wikipedia to find out that Underwood, the Oklahoma superstar’s top three songs have been “Inside Your Heaven”, “Jesus, Take the Wheel”, and “Some Hearts”. I’m a writer for anysportsanytime, not anymusicanytime. But I do know that KISS FM didn’t think rationally here, and unjustifiably made Ottawa fans blame Underwood on a hockey trade that makes perfect sense.

In writing this blog I do know one thing. There may be no space for Underwood on the airwaves, but there will always be on anysportanytime.

Don’t blame Underwood for Fisher being sent to Nashville

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

The trade today of Mike Fisher to the Nashville Predators from the Ottawa Senators for a first round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional pick  in the 2012 NHL Draft should not surprise anyone.

The Senators are currently 17 points back of the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference for a playoff spot, so don’t be surprised if they consider dealing  a couple of unrestricted free agents, particularly Alexei Kovalev and Chris Phillips, over the next two weeks.

A person that should not be blamed for today’s trade however is country music sensation Carrie Underwood. Fisher is going to a team that is in contention for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Nashville currently sits in fifth place in the West, four points up on the ninth place Minnesota Wild.

The bottom line is that hockey is a business and this deal makes sense for both teams involved.
