As we get ready to take in some first round playoff action in the NHL, let’s not forget to look back on the beauty goals that got us to this point!
This week on the GOTW (for the week of March 26) we’ve got a couple of guys getting on the end of beautiful plays by their teammates and three awesome breakaways. If you scroll right to the bottom, you’ll also see one of the strangest goals of the year!
Let’s go!
5. Jakub Voracek
That series between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins is really going to be something, especially if we get to see the type of games we saw recently between those two clubs. Check out this beauty goal from Jakub Voracek!
After four days of being down, I am glad to report that AnySportAnyTime is back up and running again. Thank-you to all of our loyal readers for being patient with us.
Here is a recap over what has happened the last four days.
In football, there were two very bizarre Conference Championships that will be remembered more for mistakes made than great plays. In the NFC Championship, Kyle Williams of the San Francisco 49ers dropped a punt in the fourth quarter and again in OT to lead the Giants to a 20-17 overtime win. In the AFC Championship, Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff missed a chip shot field goal late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 23-20 New England win.
Dany Heatley has been traded from the San Jose Sharks to the Minnesota Wild for Martin Havlat.
Heatley, had 28 goals and 36 assists last season on a Sharks’ team that finished second in the Western Conference in the regular season and playoffs to the Vancouver Canucks.
It was the least number of points (64) that Heatley had in a season since his controversial 2003-04 year with the Atlanta Thrashers when he only had 25 points in 31 games. Prior to the 2003-04 season, Heatley was seriously injured after he lost control of the Ferrari he was driving. The accident killed Heatley’s teammate Dan Snyder.
The release of Heatley, breaks up the Sharks’ big three that included captain Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau.
Havlat has been relatively healthy over his last three seasons in Chicago and Minnesota after being a significant injury risk earlier on in his career. The 30 year-old Czech Republic native had 22 goals and 40 assists in 2010-11. It will be interesting to see how he fits into the Sharks’ top six forwards this season.
In an all-Scandinavian Gold medal game, Finland defeated Sweden 6-1 to win the World Men’s Hockey Championship in Bratislava, Slovakia on Sunday afternoon.
This is Finland’s second gold medal. They previously won in 1995 in Stockholm, Sweden.
Antti Pihlstrom, who spent two years with the Nashville Predators, and Janne Pesonen, who spent a year with the Pittsburgh Penguins, each scored a goal and an assist.
Finnish captain Mikko Koivu of the Minnesota Wild was named player of the game for notching two assists.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all, Anaheim Ducks forward Bobby Ryan scored one of the strangest goals of the year on Sunday night in a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild.
In the final minutes of the second period with the Ducks leading 4-2, Wild captain Mikko Koivu loses his stick in the corner, skates past Ryan, rips the stick out of his hand and then starts playing with it! Since the refs didn’t see what had happened, play continued and about 20 seconds later Ryan decides to pick Koivu’s stick up off the ice – before realizing it’s the wrong hand… (more…)
