Kerrzy’s Notebook: Goals of the Week!

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Another week has come and gone in the National Hockey League, which means it’s time for another look at the top goals from around the rinks!

This time on the GOTW, Lightning strikes against the Ducks, a captain comes up big in overtime, a grizzled veteran shows off some silky hands, a Senator undresses a Capital and a Penguin undresses an entire team!

Let’s go!

5. Teddy Purcell

This beauty goal from the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Teddy Purcell (starts at the 1:30 mark) begins with a nifty toe drag and ends with a backhander to the top shelf – what a beauty!

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Happy Monday!

It’s that time again folks – we’re back with a fresh episode of everyone’s favorite internet sports show: 15 Minutes of Fame!

This week on the show we’re talking about another concussion-filled week in the NHL, and going through the list of hired and fired coaches from around the league. As well, we react to the big news from last week in the CFL: The Edmonton Eskimos traded quarterback Ricky Ray, the face of the franchise, to the Toronto Argonauts.

In the GABBYs: Derek Jeter, Tebowing, Patrick Chan, the National Basketball League, fighting in hockey, Jerry Sandusky’s lawyers. The Punchline this week is the washrooms at the MTS Centre!

Pronger out for the season

The issue of concussions is currently a major story in the National Hockey League.

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that former Edmonton Oiler and Norris Trophy winner Chris Pronger will be out for the rest of the regular season and playoffs due to a concussion.

Pronger has one goal and 11  assists in 13 games played this season. He also has 27 blocked shots and 15 hits.

The issue of concussions is currently a very hot topic throughout the NHL. We have had Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins out to start the season, come back temporarily, before leaving again. When he’ll be back is now anyone’s guess.

Pronger’s teammate in Philadelphia, Claude Giroux, is also out with a concussion after being kneed to the head on the weekend. Giroux currently leads the NHL with 39 points.

Two other players that are also out with concussions are Calder Trophy winner Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes and Milan Michalek of the Ottawa Senators, who leads the NHL in goals with 19.

Around the Rinks: Torres on Eberle – Dirty or Clean?

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Better prep the Wheel of Justice…

The NHL has another questionable hit to review after an Edmonton Oilers win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night at Rexall Place, and it’s a former Oiler who might be getting a phone call from Colin Campbell!

With just under seven minutes to go in the third period of what was then a 1-0 game, Raffi Torres lined up Oilers rookie Jordan Eberle in the Vancouver end, drilling him right in front of the ref. The arm went up instantly and Torres was given an elbowing major and a game misconduct, along with a fighting major for the scrap he got into with Ryan O’Marra, who immediately answered the bell for his teammate upon seeing the hit. (After the jump: Player reaction & video of the hit!) (more…)
