Two more teams were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Finals on Thursday. Last night the Ottawa Senators sent the Montreal Canadiens home packing and the Chicago Blackhawks did the dame to the Minnesota Wild.
But the bottom line is these two series were not even close. The Senators trounced the Canadiens 6-1 last night to win the Eastern Conference quarterfinal 4-1. How dominant was Ottawa? Well they outscored Montreal 13-0 in the third period throughout the series.
The Blackhawks were equally as dominant against the Wild. Marian Hossa scored twice and registered three points in a 5-1 triumph as Chicago eliminated Minnesota in five games. The Blackhawks beat the Wild despite not getting a goal in the series from Jonathan Toews.

Patrick Marleau (Ivan Makarov, Wikimedia Commons)
The first team has been knocked out from the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. On Tuesday evening, the third seeded Vancouver Canucks lost 4-3 to the San Jose Sharks when Patrick Marleau scored at 13:18 on the power play in overtime. San Jose won the Western Conference Quarterfinal 4-0.
The Sharks had the man advantage in the extra period because Daniel Sedin was given a two minute minor for boarding Sharks’ winger Tommy Wingels.
Joe Pavelski also came up big for the Sharks as he scored twice.
This is the very first time that the Sharks have swept an opponent in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Marleau meanwhile scored in every game in the series for the Sharks, who now have time to rest for the Western Conference Semi-Finals.
In other action, the Ottawa Senators got a big overtime goal from Kyle Turris to take a 3-1 series lead on the Montreal Canadiens with a 3-2 victory. The Senators were down 2-0 in the third period, before getting goals from Mike Zibanejad and Cory Conacher. Conacher’s goal came with 23 seconds left in the third period, while it appears that Zibanejad’s goal was kicked in.

Joe Pavelski (Ivan Makarov, Wikimedia Commons)
The Vancouver Canucks are now only one loss away from being eliminated from the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
On Sunday night in the Shark Tank, the Canucks got hammered 5-2 to San Jose, who now have a 3-0 lead on Vancouver in the series.
Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture scored twice for the Sharks against a Canucks team that is completely dysfunctional at the moment. Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider was horrible last night in giving up five goals to the Sharks.
In other action, the Montreal Canadiens/Ottawa Senators series is starting to be extremely physical. Last night there were 236 minutes in penalties, and many of the penalties the Canadiens took should be described as stupid. Ottawa meanwhile won convincingly 6-1 as rookie Jean Gabriel-Pageau recorded a hat trick.
In other games, the Pittsburgh Penguins took a 2-1 series lead over the New York Islanders as Chris Kunitz scored the overtime winner in a 5-4 Pittsburgh win. While in Minnesota, the Wild won their first of the series with a 3-2 win over Chicago on an overtime winner from Jason Zucker. Chicago still leads 2-1.

The 2013 World Men’s Hockey Championships will commence this weekend with Canada playing two games in Stockholm. The first will be against Denmark on Saturday (TSN, 8:00 a.m.) and the second will be against Switzerland on Sunday (TSN2, 8:00 a.m.).
There are four Oilers and one Flame on Team Canada. Jordan Eberle, Justin Schultz, Devan Dubnyk and Taylor Hall are the Oilers, while T.J. Brodie is the lone Calgary Flame.
Other notable players representing Team Canada are Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, Carolina Hurricanes sniper Eric Staal, Florida Panthers defenceman Brian Campbell (defending Lady Byng winner) and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos, who was second in the NHL in scoring with 29 goals and 57 points. Danica Patrick (Scott Mecum, Wikimedia Commons)
The opening night of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs saw two games go into extra time.
In Chicago, Bryan Bickell scored with 3:35 left in the first overtime as the Blackhawks defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-1, while in St. Louis, Kings’ goaltender Jonathan Quick gave the puck away to Alexander Steen, who scored his second of the game as the Blues defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1.
In other action, the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1.
The biggest story of the night probably came in Chicago, where NASCAR star Danica Patrick scored from center ice during the second intermission. Why was Patrick and her boyfriend Ricky Stenhouse Junior in Chicago, rather than preparing for the weekend’s NASCAR race at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama. I’m not a NASCAR expert, but I wouldn’t take Patrick or Stenhouse for the Aaron’s 499. I think Daytona 500 champion Jimmie Johnson is licking his chops by the fact his competitors are taking some leisure time no where near the race track.

Well you can say the Edmonton Oilers are taking a deep breath today. They finally beat Niklas Backstrom in Minnesota. Backstrom, who was 17-0 against the Oilers in Minnesota prior to Friday, was pulled late in the first period, after Corey Potter put the Oilers up 3-0. Edmonton then went on to win 6-1.
The Oilers won despite being outshot 39-17 by Minnesota. Their play was simply opportunistic. They registered goals on less than one third of their total shots.
Potter and Nail Yakupov scored two goals each for the Oilers, while Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall had a goal and two assists each.
Jeff Petry meanwhile might have had his best game as an Oiler, as he went a +5.

For the seventh consecutive season, the Edmonton Oilers will not be playing in the postseason.
On Sunday evening the Oilers lost 3-1 to the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers needed to win their final five games and get an immense amount of help from other teams to qualify for the postseason. They simply didn’t get it.
How bad is it for the Oilers now? Well, the Calgary Flames beat the Minnesota Wild 4-1 to pass the Oilers in the standings. To make matters worse, it was one of the Flames’ prospects, Mark Cundari, that led the Flames in scoring with a goal and an assist. Cundar was acquired by the Flames from the St. Louis Blues at the trade deadline for Jay Bouwmeester.
Also, the Oilers now have the longest current NHL streak of consecutive playoffs missed after the Toronto Maple Leafs clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2004 after defeating the Ottawa Senators 4-1 on Saturday.
Edmonton has four more games left this season, and to many loyal fans the end of the season cannot come soon enough.

In what could have been the most complete game the Calgary Flames have had all season long, the Flames defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 on Saturday night at Rexall Place in Edmonton.
According to TSN, rookies Sven Baertschi of Bern, Switzerland and Maxwell Reinhart each scored their first of the season. For Reinhart, it was also the first goal of his National Hockey League career.
Baertschi was one of three Flames to have multi-point games, joining Tim Jackman and T.J. Brodie. Baerschi notched a goal and an assist, while Jackman and Brodie each recorded two assists.
Defenceman Dennis Wideman scored the game winning goal for the Flames at 1:55 on the power play from Jackman and Brodie.

Marian Gaborik (Wikimedia Commons)
So far there have been 15 NHL trades on trade deadline day, but none more were bigger than the trade between the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers.
On Wednesday, the Jackets acquired Marian Gaborik from the Rangers for forwards Derek Dorsett (an enforcer with offensive upside who is hurt right now but might be ready in time for the playoffs), Derrick Brassard, defenceman John Moore and a sixth round pick.
This trade is interesting primarily because the Blue Jackets and Rangers made a blockbuster deal that involved Rick Nash in the summer of 2012.
In other moves, the Penguins acquired shootout specialist Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks reacquired defenceman Scott Hannan from the Nashville Predators and Raffi Torres from the Phoenix Coyotes, the Minnesota Wild acquired Jason Pominville from the Mnnesota Wild, the Phoenix Coyotes also sent forward Steve Sullivan to the New Jersey Devils and Matthew Lombardi to the Anaheim Ducks, the St. Louis Blues sent Wade Redden to the Boston Bruins, and the Colorado Avalanche sent Ryan O’Byrne to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Calgary Flames exemplified some very positive signs on Tuesday, but at the end of the day could only salvage a single point.
Zach Parise scored at the twenty-seven second mark of overtime as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Flames 2-1. Parise’s goal came on the power play after Flames’ defenceman Mark Giordano took a penalty in the final minute of the third period for covering the puck with his glove.
Wild rookie forward Jason Zucker also scored his second career goal to tie the score with 4:19 left. Zucker’s statistical line of one goal, a plus one and three shots was impressive for the limited action of seven minutes he saw on the ice.

Matt Stajan (Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames got two goals from Matt Stajan on Saturday in a big 3-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
With the win, the Flames move four points back of the Phoenix Coyotes for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Coyotes lost 3-2 in a shootout to the Edmonton Oilers Saturday afternoon.
According to TSN, Stajan scored his second and third goals of the season for the Flames. His first goal of the hockey game came at 7:19 of the third period from Jarome Iginla and Chris Butler, which turned out to be the game winning goal, and then his second goal of the night was an unassisted empty net insurance goal from center ice with nine seconds left.
Joey MacDonald also had a strong night for the Flames as he made 30 saves. The Flames will next play Sunday night against the Phoenix Coyotes before they go on a two game road trip to Minnesota and Colorado.

The playoffs are now set for the 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. After a solid week, Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones made history Friday night in Kingston, Ontario, by becoming the first female skip to go a perfect 12-0 in the round robin of the national curling championship. Manitoba will now play Ontario’s Rachel Homan in the 1-2 playoff game (Saturday, TSN, 5:00 p.m.) with the winner advancing to the final (Sunday, TSN, 5:00 p.m.) and the loser playing the winner of the 3-4 game between British Columbia’s Kelly Scott and Canada’s Heather Nedohin (Saturday, TSN, 12:00 p.m.) in the semi-final (Sunday, TSN, 7:00 a.m.).

This is not turning out to be a good homestand for the Edmonton Oilers.
On Thursday, Matt Cullen recorded two goals and an assist as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-1.
The Oilers are now 1-3 on this homestand heading into what should be considered a must win game Saturday afternoon against the Phoenix Coyotes? Why? Well, because of the Tim Horton’s Brier, the Oilers will be going on a nine game road trip, the longest road trip I ever remember the Edmonton Oilers having to go on in franchise history. Oh, and on the trip they will have to play the unbeaten Chicago Blackhawks twice. Yikes!

The Calgary Flames salvaged a point on Monday night, but lost 2-1 to the Minnesota Wild in a shootout at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Wild got goals in the shootout from Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise en route to the victory. Niklas Backstrom made 23 saves as the Wild now improve to 6-5-1 on the season and are tied with the St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers for eighth place in the Western Conference.
With the loss, the Flames fall to 3-4-3 on the season and are three points back of a playoff spot.
The Flames had a solid performance from Leland Irving, who will be counted on more over the next while. On Tuesday, according to the Canadian Press, it was announced that Miikka Kiprusoff would be out two more weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament. The sprain in the knee is apparently grade two in nature.
