Gerardo Parra (Mark Winograd, Wikimedia Commons)
For the first time in 50 years on Saturday, the only run in a Major League Baseball game came on the first pitch.
In Arizona’s 1-0 win over Miami on Saturday, Gerardo Parra, the Diamondbacks’ right fielder, hit a home run on the first pitch of the game off of Marlins’ starter Tom Koehler.
It would also be the last run scored in the entire game.
The last time that the only run was scored in the entire game from the first pitch was on September 2, 1963. According to Sports Illustrated, Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds hit a home run as the Reds defeated the New York Mets 1-0. This was Rose’s rookie season in Cincinnati. Rose, who went on to be one of the most controversial players of all time because he was banned from baseball for admitting to betting on the sport, is the all-time leader in hits with 4,256.
Arizona meanwhile move into first place in the National League West with the victory.

Sidney Crosby (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)
Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all-time. Heck, he is also the greatest athlete of all-time. But I think it is safe to say that right now Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the best hockey player in the world right now.
On Friday night, Crosby showed just why he is so great. In a dominating performance, Crosby had a hat trick by the early portion of the second period in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in game two of the Eastern Conference semi-final that put the Penguins up 2-0 in the best-out-of-seven series.
Crosby will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills north of the border this weekend as Pittsburgh travels to Ottawa for game three of the Eastern Conference semi-final (Sunday, CBC, 5:30 p.m.). I know the Penguins are loaded with talent that includes Evgeni Malkin and Jarome Iginla, but the bottom line is when healthy Pittsburgh is Crosby’s team.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching:
Saturday–MLB–New York Mets @ Chicago Cubs–WPIX–11:00 a.m.–Two teams in fourth place in their divisions play today at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are 17-24 in the National League Central, while the Mets are 16-23 in the National League East. First baseman Anthony Rizzo, who represented Italy at the World Baseball Classic, with nine home runs, 29 runs batted in and a .522 slugging percentage. While so far this season, the Mets have been led by third baseman David Wright, who leads the team with a .312 batting average, .418 on base percentage and a .536 slugging percentage.

The Edmonton Oil Kings are one win away from returning to the Western Hockey League’s Championship Final. On Sunday, the Oil Kings will play the Calgary Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome in game six of the Eastern Conference Final, leading the series 3-2.
On Friday night in Edmonton, the Oil Kings had a similar start in game five of the series to what they had in game four. Complete dominance. The Oil Kings scored three first period goals en route to a 5-1 victory. Game six can be seen on Sunday afternoon on Shaw at 4:00 p.m.

It looks more and more like the Edmonton Oilers will not make the postseason in 2013. However, there is a still a mathematical chance after their impressive 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.
The Oilers played a complete hockey game Friday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Jordan Eberle scored one goal and two assists, while Justin Schultz and Magnus Paajarvi had multi-point games.
The Oilers are now eight points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets with five games to go in the season. The next game on their schedule will be Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks (Sportsnet, 6:00 p.m.). It is basically simple. Their remaining five games, of which four are at home, are mandatory for the Oilers to win.

R.A. Dickey (D.B. King, Wikimedia Commons)
With the acquisition of the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner coming to the Toronto Blue Jays, one needs to ask will R.A. Dickey be a strong positive or a negative for the entire organization?
Fact: The Blue Jays are getting a 38 year-old pitcher who is coming off the best season of his career. The twenty wins means something because the Mets were horrible and the 230 strikeouts were also significant because it led the National League.
Fact: Dickey might be up there in age, but he is a knuckleball pitcher, who generally tend to have much longer lifelines than most pitchers.
Fact: The Blue Jays gave up significant prospects for Dickey. They include catcher Travis d’Arnaud and pitcher Noah Syndergaard.

Miguel Cabrera (Wikimedia Commons)
Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants have won baseball’s Most Valuable Player Awards for 2012.
Cabrera’s AL MVP win should come as no surprise. That is what happen when you become the first player in over forty years to win the triple crown. Posey meanwhile hit .336 and became the first catcher in the National League to win the batting title since Ernie Lombardi of the Boston Braves led the National League in 1942.
Outfielder Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim won the AL rookie of the year in a landslide. Trout led the AL in runs and stolen bases. Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals won the NL rookie of the year. He was fifth in the senior circuit in runs.
Another National to win an award was Davey Johnson who won the NL manager of the year. He was the AL manager of the year with Baltimore in 1997. Also for the second time in his career, Bob Melvin has won the manager of the year award. Nobody expected him to lead Oakland to the AL West title, but Oakland did just that getting by the sexier teams such as Texas and the Angels.

Homer Bailey (Wikimedia Commons)
For the seventh time this season, pitcher has thrown a no-hitter in Major League Baseball. On Friday night, Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds struck out ten and walked one in a 1-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bailey joins Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox, Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Johan Santana of the New York Mets, Matt Cain of the San Francisco Giants, Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners and a six pitcher effort by Seattle.
The Reds are one of four teams that have qualified for the postseason. They are joined by the National League East champion Washington Nationals, National League West champion San Francisco Giants and the National League wildcard champion Atlanta Braves.
In other baseball news, the Cleveland Indians have fired manager Manny Acta and named Sandy Alomar Jr. his replacement. The Houston Astros have also named Bo Porter their 2013 manager. Porter is currently the third base coach for the Washington Nationals.

The Calgary Stampeders and Saskatchewan Roughriders will battle this afternoon at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium (Saturday, TSN, 1pm). Both teams are 3-4 on the year, and are tied for third place in the western division.
The Roughriders got out of the gate quickly, winning their first three games before losing their last four, while the Stampeders haven’t gone on any significant run throughout the season. They haven’t been able to put two consecutive wins together all season long.
The Roughriders meanwhile will try to get revenge on a Stampeders team which came back from a 35-18 deficit to win in overtime 41-38 on July 19 at McMahon Stadium.

The Canadian Football League commences this weekend.
On Saturday night the Edmonton Eskimos host a familiar person to town. Ricky Ray will be quarterbacking not the Eskimos however at Commonwealth Stadium, but the Toronto Argonauts (Saturday, TSN, 5pm).
In a very controversial off season deal, Eskimos GM Eric Tillman traded Ray for quarterback Steven Jyles, kicker Grant Shaw and a first round pick in 2012.
In the Canadian Football League I thought you needed a solid quarterback to win football games. Ricky Ray is a great quarterback and the Eskimos let him go. Apparently Tillman didn’t get the memo.

Johan Santana (Tom Thai, Wikimedia Commons)
For the first time in club history a pitcher for the New York Mets has thrown a no-hitter.
Friday night in the big Apple, Johan Santana accomplished the feat as the New York Mets defeated the Saint Louis Cardinals 8-0.
But should Santana have been credited with a no-no? According to the Associated Press, Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran had a base hit down the line, but it was called foul by umpire Adrian Johnson. The replay clearly showed that the ball hit the foul line, meaning it should have been fair, not foul.
Santana becomes the third pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season joining Jered Weaver of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox.

J.P, Arencibia (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
For the first time in franchise history, a Toronto Blue Jays catcher has been named the American League Player of the Week.
J.P. Arencibia was bestowed the honour this past week from May 14-20. In six games last week, Arencibia batted .360, with nine hits, seven runs, four home runs and ten runs batted in.
In a 14-5 win over the New York Mets on Friday, Arencibia went three for five with two home runs and six runs batted in. He also had three hits in a 8-1 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.
The Blue Jays are playing some of their best baseball of the season at the moment. After their convincing 6-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays last night, they have now won five of six and are two games up on the Oakland Athletics in the American League Wildcard chase. Arencibia, Yunel Escobar and Colby Rasmus all had two hits and despite having six walks, Kyle Drabek threw a quality start.

At 21-18, the Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in a playoff spot in the American League East.
Last night at the Rogers Centre, rookie Drew Hutchison threw six brilliant innings as the Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees to pass the Bronx Bombers into a playoff spot in the American League.
It was a very good pitching performance by Hutchison, as five Yankees bats (including first baseman Mark Teixeira) went hitless. Third baseman Yan Gomes, who became the first ever Brazilian-born player to play in the Major Leagues, got two hits in three at bats in his Major League debut.

Alexander Ovechkin (Wikimedia Commons)
Three game sevens (and possibly a fourth) will dominate my sports viewing this weekend.
In the NHL, there is a game seven in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. This will be a battle of Alexander Ovechkin versus Henrik Lundqvist. Despite limited ice time, Ovechkin leads the Capitals in scoring with nine points, but will have to get by Hart Trophy nominee Lundqvist to move on to the Eastern Conference Final for the first time in his career. The game can be seen on CBC tonight at 5:30pm.
In the NBA, there are two game sevens, both involving the Los Angeles teams. Tonight the Los Angeles Lakers host the Denver Nuggets in game seven of the Western Conference Quarterfinal tonight (TSN2, 8:30pm). Questions are surrounding the health of Lakers star Kobe Bryant who played with the stomach flu in game six on Thursday. Afterwards, he was not happy with Pau Gasol for his lack of effort and had no problem telling him so.
Then tomorrow the Memphis Grizzlies host the Los Angeles Clippers (ABC, 11am) in game seven of another Western Conference Semi-Final. Like the Nuggets, the Grizzlies were once down 3-1 in the series but have clawed their way back to force a game seven. Last night in Los Angeles, the Grizzlies won game six 90-88 on Marc Gasol’s 23 points.

Jordan Eberle (Wikimedia Commons)
Team Canada will have a chance to build off of their tight 3-2 victory over Slovakia yesterday when they face their American archrival nemesis this morning at the World Hockey Championships in Helsinki (TSN, 10am).
The Americans are coming off a commanding opening victory over France yesterday where they won 7-2.
Even though, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Devan Dubnyk and Jordan Eberle missed the playoffs for the Edmonton Oilers, this tournament could be valuable experience for them.
An American Oilers fans would be familiar with is defenceman Jeff Petry, who is joined on the American blueline with Jack Johnson, Alex Goligoski and Cam Fowler.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:
Saturday–NHL Eastern Conference Semi-Final Game 4–New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals–10:30am–NBC–After coming off the longest game of the playoffs Wednesday night (game went into triple overtime), the Capitals will try to tie the series at two games apiece. Brad Richards continues to produce in the playoffs. The former Conn Smythe Trophy winner leads the Rangers in playoff scoring with nine points. For the Rangers to get by Washington however, they will need more from Artem Anisimov and Ruslan Fedotenko. They combined for 25 regular season goals, but only have a combined total of one goal in the playoffs.
Saturday–MLB–Arizona Diamondacks @ New York Mets–1:30pm–FOX–Despite only hitting .254 last season, Mets third baseman David Wright has got off to a great start in 2012, batting .395 with eight extra base hits. Last night J.J. Putz recorded his sixth save of the season as Arizona defeated the New York Mets 5-4. Arizona is 14-13 while the NY Mets are 13-13.
