Joey Votto (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
For the third time in his career, Toronto native Joey Votto, the first baseman slugger for the Cincinnati Reds has been named the National League player of the week.
Votto batted .583, had two home runs, five runs batted in, a .655 on base percentage, and a .917 slugging percentage this past week.
On the season, the Reds slugger is second in batting average at .349, fifteen points back of Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Juan Segura at .364. He is also third in runs scored with 33, behind Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies at 36 and Shin-Soo Choo of the Cincinnati Reds at 35.Votto also has six home runs and 20 runs batted in for the year.
Speaking about red hot, so too is Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera. The Tigers slugger and reigning American League MVP is trying to become the first player in Major League Baseball history to win the triple crown in back-to-back years. He currently leads the American League with a .387 batting average and 47 runs batted in, and his 11 home runs are only one back of Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays, Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees, Mark Reynolds of the Cleveland Indians and Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles, who each have 12.

Rafael Soriano (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
It is a question that is worth asking. Why do Major League Baseball teams decide to give huge money to players who pitch an inning a game, and probably on average four innings a week?
On Tuesday, the Washington Nationals did just that, signing Rafael Soriano from the New York Yankees to a two year deal worth a whopping $28 million.
Last season, Soriano was 2-1 with 42 saves and an earned run average of 2.26 in 69 games. He was originally assigned to the set-up man but was pressed into closer’s duty when Mariano Rivera tore his ACL while catching a fly ball during practice in a Yankees’ game at Kansas City.
But should a closer be worth more than a starter or a position player? How many wins does a closer provide a baseball team in a typical season? Yes, Soriano is an elite closer with 132 career saves, but what should his real worth with the Nationals be? Let us know at www.anysportanytime.ca.

Hideki Matsui (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
Hideki Matsui has retired from baseball.
On Thursday, Matsui, who was the 2009 World Series Most Valuable Player with the New York Yankees, decided he was finished playing professionally after ten seasons with the Yankees, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays.
An all-star in 2003 and 2004, Matsui might have had his finest season in 2005, when he set a career high with a .305 batting average and 116 runs batted in.
In the 2009 World Series, the Yankees defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in six games. Matsui was a monster, batting .615, with three home runs and eight runs batted in.
An outfielder, Matsui starred with the Yomiuri Giants for ten seasons before coming to the United States a decade ago. In Japan, he was a nine-time all-star and three-time Japan Series champion.

Josh Hamilton (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
There is no doubt that the Toronto Blue Jays have opened their wallets big time this past offseason and are willing to make a big time move to contend in the American League.
But you have to put everything into perspective. This was still a horrible baseball team last season at 73-89, and will have to win a minimum of 20 extra games to put them in a position to be in a playoff spot.
I know they acquired a whole bunch of talent, but with every single player they acquired, comes a question mark.
The Angels seem to be in a stronger position with the acquisition of star outfielder Josh Hamilton from Texas. The Hamilton-Albert Pujols combination gives the Angels some serious fire power.
The Blue Jays will also have to contend with the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays who will all expect to be in contention as well come year’s end.

Russell Martin (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The Pittsburgh Pirates are hoping that Russell Martin of Toronto, Ontario is able to duplicate his all-star seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007 and 2008.
On Friday, the Pirates signed Martin to a two year contract worth $17 million, significant when you take a look at the Canadian’s poor performances the last two seasons with the New York Yankees. He only batted .237 in 2011 and .211 in 2012.
The Pirates are trying to upgrade a position from last season where former Blue Jay Rod Barajas only batted .206. Still even though Martin was extremely inconsistent, he did hit 21 home runs this season and had a big home run late in a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Divisional Series.
In other baseball news, the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals acquired centerfielders over the last two days. The Braves acquired B.J. Upton (.246, 28 HR, 78 RBIs) from the Tampa Bay Rays and the Nationals acquired Denard Span (.283, 4 HR, 41 RBIs) from the Minnesota Twins. Upton’s contract is for five years where he will make $75.5 million.

Derek Jeter (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The rest of the 2012 Major League Baseball postseason will not have New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.
In an amazing scene Saturday night at Yankee Stadium for game one of the American League Championship Series, Jeter dove for a ground ball, fell awkwardly on the ground and could not get up. In fact, Jeter needed the assistance of manager Joe Girardi to get back to the dugout.
The diagnosis was a broken ankle and yesterday the announcement was made that Jeter will be out for the remainder of the playoffs.
The Yankees have now activated Eduardo Nunez and will start former Toronto Blue Jay Jayson Nix at shortstop.
Currently the Yankees are trailing Detroit 2-0 in the American League Championship Series. Yesterday the Tigers won 3-0 on a brilliant pitching performance by Anibal Sanchez. The Yankees bats are currently frozen. They only had four hits yesterday afternoon.

The Edmonton Eskimos will face a difficult challenge Saturday against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium (Saturday, TSN, 2pm).
Luckily, they will have linebacker J.C. Sherritt, maybe the best defensive player in all of football back in the lineup.
This is a monumental game for Edmonton (6-8), who will not only want to expand their lead on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-10) in a possible crossover, but will want to win the season series against the Roughriders (8-6), because with a victory, they will only be two points back of Saskatchewan in the Western Division. Saskatchewan meanwhile is playing great football lately. They have now won three in a row after beating the Toronto Argonauts 36-10 on Thanksgiving.

The St. Louis Cardinals postseason dramatics continued Friday night.
Down 7-5 to the Washington Nationals in the ninth inning, St. Louis scored four times in the final inning en route to a 9-7 win in the fifth and deciding game of the National League divisional playoff.
The Cardinals got a pair of dramatic two-run two-out singles in the ninth. The first from second baseman Daniel Descalso to tie the game at seven, and then from shortstop Pete Kozma to take the two run lead.
The Cardinals, who at one time trailed 6-0 in game five, will now play the San Francisco Giants in the NLCS.

Buster Posey (Wikimedia Commons)
We now know two teams that have advanced to the League Championship Series in the 2012 Major League Baseball postseason.
On Thursday, San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey hit a grand slam to cap off a six run fifth inning as the Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-4.
The Giants become the first National League team in postseason history to win the last three games on the road after losing the first two games of the series at home.
The Reds season is now over, so that means we will no longer get to see manager Dusty Baker constantly play with the toothpick in his mouth.
In the American League, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander was spectacular in throwing a complete game four hitter and striking out 11. The Tigers got two runs each from Austin Jackson and Omar Infante in a 6-0 win.
Today, the New York Yankees play the Baltimore Orioles and the Saint Louis Cardinals play the Washington Nationals in two more exciting first round divisional series that are going to a fifth and deciding game. On Thursday, the Orioles got a home run from Nate McLouth to beat the Yankees 2-1, and the Nationals got a game winning home run from Jayson Werth in the 9th inning to beat the Cardinals 2-1.

Raul Ibanez (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
The New York Yankees could have easily been scrutinized on Thursday. Manager Joe Torre benched third baseman Alex Rodriguez, (three-time American League Most Valuable Player Alex Rodriguez) for forty year old pinch hitter Raul Ibanez last night with the Yankees trailing 2-1 with one out in the ninth inning to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night.
But Ibanez delivered, with not just a game-tying solo home run in the ninth inning, but a game-winning walk-off home run in the twelfth inning as well. The home run gave the Yankees a 3-2 win and a 2-1 series lead.
The dramatics continued in Oakland an hour later. Down 3-1 to the Detroit Tigers in the ninth inning, Coco Crisp recorded the game winning run batted in as the Athletics defeated the Tigers 4-3. That series is now tied at two, with game five tonight in Oakland.

Russell Martin (Wikimedia Commons)
In only batting .211, it was clearly not the best season for New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin.
But the native of East York, Ontario delivered Sunday night in Baltimore by hitting his second career postseason home run.
The hit was extremely timely as it broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth inning, which helped lead the New York Yankees to a convincing 7-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles in game one of the American League Divisional Series.

Milos Raonic (Chris Johnson, Wikimedia Commons)
This is currently one of the most exciting times in Canadian tennis. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario achieved greatness again Friday night when he defeated U.S. Open and Olympic champion Andy Murray of Great Britain in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 at the Japan Open in Tokyo.
Raonic saved off two match points in the third set and was able to break Murray back after being down 4-1 in the final set.
Raonic also performed admirably while not serving in the third set, something he has struggled with in his career. He will now face Japan’s Kei Nishikori in tonight’s final (11pm, Sportsnet One). Raonic is also seeking his third title of the season, having won in Chennai and San Jose earlier in the year.

Phil Mickelson (Steven Newton, Wikimedia Commons)
The 39th Ryder Cup is currently taking place just outside of Chicago. On Day 1, the Americans took an early 5-3 lead on Europe thanks to some brilliant shot making by Keegan Bradley, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Jason Dufner.
On day two (Saturday, NBC, 7am), there will be four foursome matches in the morning, followed by four fourball matches in the afternoon. The best morning matchup will be Bradley and Mickelson against England’s Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. An interesting morning omission by Davis Love III is Tiger Woods, who played much better in the afternoon on Friday in four ball action than he did in the foursome with partner Steve Stricker in the morning.
Another golfer to watch out for on Saturday is Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, who will be teamed with Spain’s Sergio Garcia against Americans Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner. Colsaerts had eight birdies and an eagle on Friday afternoon.
The Ryder Cup will then conclude Sunday with singles play (NBC, 10am).

The Edmonton Eskimos will try to snap a two game losing streak to their provincial rivals, the Calgary Stampeders, when they face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium this afternoon (TSN, 1pm).
The Eskimos may be sitting last in the Western Division at 5-5, but with a victory can move an important six points up on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a possible opportunity to cross-over in the East come playoff time, if they cannot make up ground on the 5-5 Saskatchewan Roughriders.
This week the Eskimos and Tiger-Cats also made a trade. Edmonton acquired fullback Darcy Brown from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for defensive back Ricardo Colclough and a sixth round pick in the 2015 Canadian Football League draft.
