NHL Trade Deadline Preview

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

One of the more intriguing days on the hockey calendar takes place tomorrow. The National Hockey League Trade deadline takes place at 1pm Mountain tomorrow.

Here are is my list of the top ten players I am projecting to be traded:

10) Nikolai Khabibulin–Edmonton Oilers–Even though he is not an unrestricted free agent, the Oilers have Devan Dubnyk and Yann Danis to lead them until they are ready to be respectable. Neither are the long term answer, but a year at the status quo in net will give added heartburn for Oilers fans.

9) Kristian Huselius–Columbus Blue Jackets–The former Calgary Flame has only played two games this season and not since December 2 because of a groin injury but is expected back soon and could provide a contender with offensive depth.

8Steve Staios–New York Islanders–The former Edmonton Oiler and Calgary Flame is 38 years old and could provide a team with some steady presence on defence. Despite not having a goal, he has an impressive 104 blocked shots.

Oilers & Flames lose Monday

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

The Calgary Flames continue to struggle in Anaheim. They have now lost 14 straight games at the Honda Center. On Monday night, former Flame forward Niklas Hagman scored the shootout winner a 3-2 Anaheim win.

The Flames did however preserve a much needed point in the Western Conference Standings when Jarome Iginla tied the game at 2 by scoring on the breakaway. The Flames captain has now scored at least 20 goals every year since 1998-99. Alex Tanguay was the other Flames goal scorer.

Calgary is now three points back of the Minnesota Wild for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They next play in San Jose Wednesday night.

The Oilers defensive woes meanwhile continued Monday night in Toronto. Tyler Bozak scored a key goal for the Maple Leafs on a Cam Barker giveaway that gave Toronto a 4-1 lead at the time en route to a 6-3 victory. The Oilers had no answers for Phil Kessel, who scored two goals, an assist, had six shots and was a solid +4.

Edmonton also got hit with the injury bug on Monday as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins re-injured his shoulder and head coach Tom Renney was absent behind the bench because he got hit in the head with the puck during practice. This was the latest segment of injuries this season prior to game time.

Edmonton next plays in Detroit on Wednesday.

Ducks claim Hagman off waivers from Flames

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Niklas Hagman’s days in Calgary are officially over.

On Monday, the Anaheim Ducks claimed Hagman off waivers from the Calgary Flames. Hagman had one goal and three assists for the Flames in eight games. He was put on waivers so the team could find a spot for Mikael Backlund, who missed the team’s first 14 games with a broken finger.

Hagman came to the Flames in January, 2010, in the Dion Phaneuf blockbuster trade between the Flames and Toronto Maple Leafs. Hagman had 17 goals and 25 assists as a Flame.

Prior to playing two seasons for the Maple Leafs, Hagman played one season with the Florida Panthers and three seasons with the Dallas Stars.

Hagman was also part of Team Finland that won a Silver medal at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino and a Bronze medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

The controversial trade where the Flames dealt Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aullie and Fredrik Sjostrom to the Maple Leafs for Ian White, Hagman, Matt Stajan and Jamal Mayers was seen as one of many reasons why former General Manager Darryl Sutter lost his job on December 28, 2010.

Blues acquire Kris Russell from Blue Jackets

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Kris Russell (D.M. Browne, Wikimedia Commons)

The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded defenceman Kris Russell to the Saint Louis Blues for defenceman Nikita Nikitin.

Russell, a Caroline, Alberta native, an hour north of Calgary, had two goals and one assist in 12 games for Columbus this season. Russell will be reunited with new Blues’ head coach Ken Hitchcock, who was named to his position last weekend after spending four years coaching the Blue Jackets.

Nikitin had no points in seven games and was a -5.

Russell is more of an offensive-minded defenceman that hasn’t completely developed into the player many thought he might become. He has 76 goals and 120 assists in 196 games.

Russell won two Gold medals for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships (2006 in Vancouver and 2007 in Leksand, Sweden).

Kiprusoff sets franchise record in wins

The Calgary Flames (1-2) won their first game of the season Thursday night in Montreal against the Canadiens and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff set a prestigious team record.

In making 35 saves, Kiprusoff passed Mike Vernon as the all-time leader for the Calgary Flames in goaltending wins with 263.

It was a significant night for Rene Bourque who scored two goals on three shots. His first goal came on the power play to tie the game at one. Then he scored his third of the season in the second period from Matt Stajan and Chris Butler.

Butler, who picked up two assists, recorded his first two points as  a member of the Flames. The young defenceman was acquired by Calgary in the deal that saw Robyn Regehr go to the Sabres. Alex Tanguay also notched a multi-point game with two assists. David Moss and Niklas Hagman also scored the Flames.

The Flames will continue on the road, as they next play the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night. Game time is 5pm.
