Prefontaine kicks GW Field Goal in Toronto win over Calgary

Saturday, July 7th, 2012

The Calgary Stampeders fell to 1-1 on the season in the Canadian Football League following a disappointing 39-36 loss to the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday afternoon at the Rogers Centre in the Ontario capital.

But the Stampeders lost more than a football game. In the first quarter, shortly after leading the Stampeders on a touchdown drive, Calgary quarterback Drew Tate injured his left shoulder and did not return. It is unknown at this time if Tate dislocated or separated his shoulder. He is expected to fly back to Calgary this week to have his arm examined.

Backup quarterback Kevin Glenn, who played the majority of the game against Montreal today is expected to start Thursday in Montreal.

One major concern in Calgary today was their sloppy pass defense. Toronto Argonauts quarterback Ricky Ray threw for 407 yards–including 118 yards to Andre Durie and 107 yards to Dontrelle Inman. Cory Boyd also had 101 yards rushing.

Stampeders lose to Argonauts 31-29

The Calgary Stampeders can only blame themselves in a 31-29 loss to Toronto on Friday night at the Rogers Centre.

First half interceptions and second half penalties were solely to blame for Calgary’s loss. And another interesting development occurred on Friday night– a possible quarterback controversy. Henry Burris was clearly outplayed tonight by backup Drew Tate.

Burris was pulled in the second quarter after only going six for eleven for 65 yards, with two sacks and two interceptions. Tate meanwhile, went 19 for 28 for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

The Stampeders were in fact down 28-9 at half time, and clawed their way back in the second half, and remarkably took the 29-28 lead on a 24 yard field goal by Rene Paredes.

Then on the final drive of the football game, three key penalties– including two illegal contact penalties by defensive back Brandon Smith and an unnecessary roughness penalty by Juwan Simpson, put the Argonauts in an excellent position to get a game winning chip shot field goal by Noel Prefontaine, who did not disappoint.

Stamps lose opener in CFL season

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

It was not a strong cohesive performance by the Calgary Stampeders in their regular season debut on Canada Day Friday.

The Calgary Stampeders lost 23-21 to the Toronto Argonauts and it was the kicking game that was the most significant difference at McMahon Stadium.

Rob Maver only went one for four in field goal attempts, missing opportunities from 21 and 34 yards. Argonauts’ kicker Noel Prefontaine, on the other hand went three for three, including converting a 43 yard field goal attempt with 22 seconds left to give the Argonauts two key points.

The poor special teams performance by the Stampeders did not only come from Maver. Stampeders’ kick returner Larry Taylor fumbled the ball early in the second half, that led to a Prefontaine field goal to put the Argonauts up 10-5.

Offensively, the Stampeders missed many great opportunities to score touchdowns over field goals. Henry Burris seemed to be out of sync with his offense at key times. Burris had 293 yards passing, and combined with Joffrey Reynolds for 107 yards on the ground, but were not able to execute when it mattered most.

Weekend Sports Recap– November 13-14

Jason Clermont (Bing Images)

This past weekend was a major example why the Canadian Football League can be considered better than the National Football League.

The B.C. Lions-Saskatchewan Roughriders battle in the Western Semi-Final yesterday from Mosaic Stadium was a thriller, highlighted by Jason Clermont’s overtime touchdown that put the Roughriders into the Western Final against the Calgary Stampeders. Clermont’s OT TD was his first of the season, and it became even more climactic because he spent his first seven seasons as a Lion before signing as a free agent with the Roughriders in December, 2008.

Weekend Sports Preview November 13-14

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Solomon Elimimian (Bing Images)

This is the time where the Canadian Football League takes center stage with two interesting semi-final match-ups.

First up is the Toronto Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Division Semi-Final (Sunday, TSN, 11AM). Both teams finished the year at 9-9 with Hamilton sweeping the season series 3-0  by a combined total score of 74-28. The Ti-Cats are led by Eastern Division nominee for the Best Defensive Player, Markeith Knowlton, who led the CFL with six fumble returns. The Argonauts probably don’t have the advantage on offense or defense, but have a clear advantage on special teams where ex-Eskimo Noel Prefontaine handles the kicking duties and Chad Owens is the best punt returner in the CFL.

Weekend Sports Preview October 16-17

Friday, October 15th, 2010

Justin Medlock (Ethan Farquharson, Wikimedia Commons)

More baseball, football and hockey.

This is what I’ll be  watching this weekend!

Saturday–2pm–New York Yankees @ Texas Rangers–(Yankees lead ALCS 1-0)–Sportsnet–The New York Yankees have an excellent shot of going up 2-0 in the ALCS, as Yankees’ 18 game winner Phil Hughes goes up against Colby Lewis of the Rangers. This is when statistics can be a little deceiving however because even though Hughes was 18-8, he had a regular season earned run average of 4.19 compared to Lewis’s record of 12-13 and earned run average of 3.72.

Saturday & Sunday–6pm–San Francisco Giants @ Philadelphia Phillies–Games 1 & 2– FOX–The National League Championship Series will be excellent if you like pitching, as both teams are stacked at the starting positions. The Phillies will start Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt respectively while the Giants counter with Tim Lincecum and Jonathan Sanchez. For some reason, the little voice at the back of my head is picking the Giants to win the series in an upset. Watch and learn people.

Saturday–8pm–CFL–Edmonton Eskimos @ British Columbia Lions–TSN–If the Eskimos (4-10) make the playoffs like someone on this website is basically guaranteeing, they’ll have to win Saturday night. The Lions (5-9) will obviously start Travis Lulay, who in my opinion is overrated. The Eskimos sent Noel Prefontaine to the Argos this week, and picked up the younger Justin Medlock off waivers, who I am very high on. This is the first gutsy move by Tillman, and I’ll be watching closely, if it works out.

Saturday–8pm–NHL–Edmonton Oilers @ Calgary Flames–CBC–In a rare time when the Oilers and Eskimos play at the same time, both teams are trying to rebound after Thursday losses where they were clearly outplayed by their opponents. The Flames (1-2) seem to be in more of a funk than the Oilers (2-1), so I am going to give the slight edge to Edmonton. How the young Oilers respond in hostile territory is a big question however.

Sunday–11am–CFL–Winnipeg Blue Bombers @ Montreal Alouettes–TSN–Both teams are coming off Thanksgiving wins– Winnipeg against B.C. and Montreal against Calgary. It will be interesting to see if the Bombers (4-10) gain any momentum from their remarkable come from behind win against British Columbia. I say no because the Alouettes (10-4) just looked way too strong Monday.

Sunday–11am–NFL–Seattle Seahawks @ Chicago Bears–FOX–The Seahawks (2-2) have outscored their opponents so far 58-26 at home and have been outscored 51-17 on the road. They got hammered by the Rams two weeks ago, and then the Rams got hammered by the Lions. It could be a long afternoon for Pete Carroll and company as they face the defensive pounding Chicago Bears (4-1).

Sunday–2pm–NFL–Dallas Cowboys @ Minnesota Vikings–FOX–Yes, both of these teams are shockingly 1-3 to start the season, and both will have difficulty making the playoffs because of the difficult schedules they’ll have to face the rest of the way. Welcome to the NFL. The Cowboys seem to be playing a little better than the Vikings who seem out of sync in the early going.

Sunday–6pm–NFL–Indianapolis Colts @ Washington Redskins–NBC–The Colts (3-2) will look to continue to play solid defense after stopping the Chiefs to only nine points last week. The Colts’ rush defense concerns me however, as Maurice Jones Drew and Arian Foster have looked excellent in the Colts’ two road losses. The Redskins should utilize the run over the pass Sunday night.
