All of a sudden the Oklahoma City Barons, the Edmonton Oilers’ American Hockey League affliate, have had problems scoring and have run into a very hot goaltender.
The Barons headed into the weekend leading the Grand Rapids Griffins, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in the Western Conference Final of the Calder Cup Playoffs, but the Barons failed to score a goal in two complete games this weekend.
Griffins goaltender Petr Mrazek made 40 saves in a 4-0 Grand Rapids win on Saturday and then made 37 saves on Sunday in a 3-0 Griffins win, who took a 3-2 lead in the series.
Game six now shifts back to Michigan on Tuesday evening.

Jonathan Cheechoo (Ivan Makarov, Wikimedia Commons)
Hands up if you knew that former San Jose Sharks’ sniper Jonathan Cheechoo was now playing for the Oklahoma City Barons in the Calder Cup Playoffs?
I don’t blame you if you didn’t realize. Wild thing is that the way the Moose Factory, Ontario native is playing, he should have been playing for the Edmonton Oilers all season instead of with their farm team.
On Wednesday evening, Cheechoo led the Barons attack with a goal and an assist as Oklahoma City defeated Grand Rapids Griffins 4-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference Final of the American Hockey League playoffs.
Cheechoo, who has the Sharks’ franchise record for most goals in one regular season with 56 set in 2006, was also a +2.
The Barons are also getting great goaltening from Yann Danis, who once again was solid as he made 20 saves and only gave up one goal.
Game four of the series will be in Oklahoma City on Friday.

Another Finnish player had a multi-point game for the Barons as left winger Toni Rajala registered two assists.
With the game tied at 2 in the third period, Mark Arcobello scored the game winning goal at 7:45 of the final frame before Hartikainen scored an insurance marker into the empty net with 24 seconds left.

Edmonton Oilers fans aren’t having an opportunity to cheer for the Oilers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but are having a chance to cheer on the Oklahoma City Barons, the Oilers’ American Hockey League affiliate in the 2013 Calder Cup Playoffs.
The Barons beat the Charlotte Checkers (affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes) 3-2 in the Western Conference quarterfinals earlier this month in a best of five series before defeating the Texas Stars (affiliate of the Dallas Stars) 4-1 in the Western Conference semi-finals. The Barons, seeded fifth were underdogs on both occasions.
Now the Barons are facing the Grand Rapids Griffins, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings in the Western Conference Final. The Griffins won game one of the series 2-1 on Friday night.

The Oklahoma City Barons seem to have run into a hot goaltender.
Ben Scrivens of Spruce Grove, Alberta made 30 saves Wednesday night as the Toronto Marlies beat the Oklahoma City Barons 3-0 to take a 3-1 series lead in the American Hockey League’s Western Conference Final.
The Barons are the affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers and the Marlies are the affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to the Canadian Press, the Marlies are trying to reach the Calder Cup Final for the first time since 1992 when the St. John’s Maple Leafs lost in seven games to the Adirondack Red Wings. St. John’s current American Hockey League affiliate, the St. John’s IceCaps, were swept in the Eastern Conference Final to the Norfolk Admirals, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Matt Frattin scored twice as the Marlies, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, took a 2-1 lead in the best out of seven series. Frattin broke a 3-3 tie with a game winning goal with 2:02 left.
The Barons, the top farm team of the Edmonton Oilers, also had a tough time stopping Philippe Dupuis, who notched a goal and an assist, was a +1, and five shots on net.

The Oklahoma City Barons are back on even turns against the Toronto Marlies in the Calder Cup playoffs of the American Hockey League.
Friday night in Oklahoma City, Mark Acrobello and Philippe Cornet each scored a goal and an assist as the Barons defeated the Marlies 5-1 to tie the Western Conference Final 1-1.
Magnus Paajarvi, Bryan Rodney and Bryan Helmer each notched two assists. Paajarvi was also a +3.
Goaltender Yann Danis made 27 saves on 28 shots.
This could be a very important time in the coaching career of Barons’ head coach Todd Nelson. According to John Shannon of Rogers Sportsnet, Nelson is becoming a legitimate candidate the Oilrs are considering as their next head coach.
The clubs also were very physical. A total of 87 minutes in penalties occurred stemming from an altercation with 2:07 left in the third period. The series now shifts to Toronto on Monday afternoon.
In the Eastern Final, Norfolk beat St. John’s 3-1 Saturday to take a 2-0 lead in their series.

On a day where I highly praised the coaching skills of Todd Nelson, and suggested as Sportsnet’s Mark Spector implied, that the Oklahoma City Barons’ bench boss is a legitimate candidate for the Edmonton Oilers coaching vacancy, the Barons struggled mightily Thursday night in a terrible 5-0 loss to the Toronto Marlies in game one of the American Hockey League’s Western Conference Final.
Spruce Grove native Ben Scrivens made 31 saves for the Marlies. Marcel Mueller and Nicolas Deschamps each had a goal and an assist, while top Toronto Maple Leaf prospect Nazim Kadri and Philippe Dupuis each had two helpers.
Speaking of Scrivens, have we seen a better goaltender to come out of Spruce Grove since Grant Fuhr? I don’t think so.
It will be a short turn around for the Barons, the AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, and the Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, as the teams will play game two of the series tonight in Oklahoma City.
Meanwhile in the Eastern Conference Final, the Norfolk Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Tampa Bay Lightning hammered the St. John’s IceCaps 6-1 in game one of their series.

The Canadian media may final pay attention a little bit more to the American Hockey League’s Western Conference Final.
Gosh, golly, gee? Could a network care enough to actually broadcast one or more of the games? Could The Score possibly step up and bring some quality programming for once?
I’m not sure, but you can stay in tune to www.anysportanytime.ca for complete recaps and analysis of the Oklahoma City Barons (AHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers) and the Toronto Marlies (AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs) which will start Thursday.
Friday night in San Antonio, the Barons defeated the Rampage (AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers) 4-3 to win the best-out-of-seven series 4-1 in the Western Conference Semi-Final.
The Barons and Rampage each scored a goal in the second period and two goals in the third period. So what was the difference? Well it was Mark Acrobello’s lone first period goal. Ryan Keller also had a huge impact in this one, scoring the game winning goal for the Barons on the power play with 2:06 left.

Well the Edmonton Oilers completely stunk this season, but the same cannot be said for two teams very close to them.
On Thursday night, the Edmonton Oil Kings, who are owned by the Edmonton Oilers, defeated the Portland Winterhawks 4-3 to take a 3-2 lead in the Western Hockey League Championship Final, and the Oklahoma City Barons, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, defeated the San Antonio Rampage 2-1 in overtime to take a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference Semi-Final of the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs.
I watched the Oil Kings victory and have thoroughly enjoyed the WHL Final to date. The Oil Kings got a huge game winning goal by Mark Pysyk with only 56 seconds left in the game. Pysyk, a draft pick of the Buffalo Sabres is more known for his defense than offense, but performed admirably, recording a goal and an assist. Jordan Peddle led the Oil Kings in scoring with two goals and an assist.
Meanwhile in San Antonio, Chris Vandevelde scored his second overtime goal of the playoffs to give the Barons a key win over the Rampage, the AHL affiliate of Florida.

The Oklahoma City Barons, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, took a 2-1 series lead in the Western Conference Finals of the Calder Cup playoffs on Monday night.
For the second straight game, the Barons won in overtime. Chris VandeVelde scored at 15:50 of overtime as the Barons defeated the San Antonio Rampage, the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers. Josh Green scored the overtime winner for Oklahoma City on Saturday night to even the series.
Anton Lander opened the scoring for the Barons 1:18 into the first period of play before the Rampage tied the game at one with 8:54 left in the third period. The Barons dominated the play in the first period, outshooting the Rampage 10-3.
Yann Danis, who is one of the best goalies in the AHL, made 25 saves for Oklahoma City. The series continues on Thursday with game four.
Meanwhile, the Abbotsford Heat/Toronto Marlies series continues tonight with game four. Toronto leads 2-1.

For the second time on Saturday, a Green scored the game winning goal.
Last night, Josh Green followed up Mike Green’s game winner for the Washington Capitals, with a game winning goal of his own as the Oklahoma City Barons, the top minor-league affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, defeated the San Antonio Rampage 5-4 in overtime.
The Western Conference Semi-Final series is now tied 1-1. The Rampage are the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers.
Several Barons had multi-point games. Green and Magnus Paajarvi each scored a goal and an assist, while defencemen Bryan Rodney and Dylan Yeo and right winger Tyler Pitlick each had two assists. Defenceman Alex Plante was also strong as he was a +3.
