The Calgary Flames played like a team who were playing their second game of a back-to-back Monday night in Phoenix.

Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith made 30 saves and Raffi Torres and Antoine Vermette had a goal and an assist each as Phoenix defeated Calgary 4-0.

David Moss and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also had a multi-point game as they each had two assists. The Coyotes’ defencemen of Ekman-Larsson and Zbynek Michalek were each a +3 for the Coyotes according to www.tsn.ca.

Defenceman Keith Yandle scored the game winning goal for the Coyotes only 41 seconds into the hockey game.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan is still playing strong. At 36 years of age he caused havoc throughout the night and was making Flames’ goaltender Danny Taylor’s night uncomfortable. Taylor was making his first start in his NHL career.

Smith the difference as Coyotes advance

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

The Phoenix Coyotes are off to the Western Conference Semi-Finals. The Winnipeg Jet-almosts beat the Chicago Blackhawks convincingly in Chicago Monday night by a score of 4-0.

The Blackhawks were the better team in the series in every area except one–the position of goaltending.

The bottom line was that Mike Smith was completely brilliant, compared to the shaky Corey Crawford who needless to say was horrible at specific times when the games were tight.

Last night, after the Blackhawks dominated the first half of the game but couldn’t beat Smith, the Coyotes dominated the third period. Former Oiler Gilbert Brule, Westlock’s Kyle Chipchura and Oliver Ekman-Larsson all notched a goal and assist as Phoenix will now play the Nashville Predators in round two.

In other hockey news, Oilers forward Jordan Eberle has been nominated for the Lady Byng. This season he had 34 goals and 42 assists and only 10 penalty minutes. He’ll be up against Brian Campbell of the Florida Panthers and Matt Moulson of the New York Islanders. Campbell will try to become the first defenceman to win the Lady Byng since Red Kelly of the Detroit Red Wings in 1954.

Eberle meanwhile is being joined by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who is being nominated for the Calder. No Edmonton Oiler has won a major award since Mark Messier won the Hart and Bill Ranford won the Conn Smythe in 1990.

Oilers & Flames lose Thursday

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames both lost Thursday night, but the Flames lost in overtime, meaning they are now tied with the Oilers for 11th place in the Western Conference standings.

Last night in Tampa Bay, 2010 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner Steven Stamkos scored his 19th goal of the season, just thirty seconds into overtime to give the Lightning a 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames.

The Flames however showed an exemplary effort in mounting a comeback to get themselves a single point. Rene Bourque and Olli Jokinen each scored for the Flames in the third period to tie the game at four, and get themselves a single point out of the contest.

The Oilers meanwhile lost 4-2 to the Phoenix Coyotes. Oliver Ekman-Larsson led Phoenix with a goal and an assist. Devan Dubnyk played well in net, but gave up a weak insurance goal to Ekman-Larsson to put Phoenix up by two late in the third period.

Calgary and Edmonton now have identical 14-14-3 records, and are tied for 11th in the Western Conference, four points back of the San Jose Sharks and Phoenix Coyotes.

Calgary next plays in Florida tonight, while the Oilers are in San Jose tomorrow night.
