Olli Jokinen (Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames have lost their leader in assists from last season.
On Monday it was confirmed that the Winnipeg Jets had signed Olli Jokinen to a two year deal worth nine million.
Jokinen had 38 assists for the Flames last season to lead the team and was also second in points (61) and third in goals (23).
The Flames on Monday simply decided to spend their money on Jiri Hudler rather than Olli Jokinen.
Jokinen maybe six years older than Hudler, but Jokinen has proven he is a more complete player. I know Jokinen had only 11 more points, but he also had a whopping 96 more shots on goal.
The Jets love Finnish talent and Jokinen will give Winnipeg hockey fans a glimpse of the past when they had the great Teemu Selanne.

Curtis Glencross (Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames moved back into eighth spot in the Western Conference Sunday with a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Curtis Glencross and Jarome Iginla each scored a goal and an assist for the Flames. Glencross has now scored in seven straight contests. Kent Nilsson and Gary Roberts have the Flames’ record with a goal in eight straight games.
It is just not that Glencross has scored in seven straight games that is interesting. The former Oiler is scoring big goals. On Sunday, Glencross broke a 2-2 tie, just moments after Minnesota’s Erik Christensen scored two goals in a 2:20 time period to tie the game.
It was also a memorable day for Flames rookie Sven Baertschi as he scored his first NHL goal 1:43 into the third period from Tom Kostopoulos and Derek Smith. It will be interesting to see how much time Baertschi will get as the Flames try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2009. Olli Jokinen also scored for Calgary, while Erik Christensen scored for Minnesota.
David Moss, playing in his sixth game since missing 47 games with ankle surgery, might have had the best game he has had this season, leading the team with seven shots on net. Olli Jokinen was also dominant on the faceoff circle, winning 13 of 19 draws.
Flames rookie Guillaume Desbiens also got on the game sheet by having a fight with Wild rookie Matt Kassian.
Calgary next plays San Jose on Tuesday night. They currently are tied with the Los Angeles Kings for eighth place in the West with identical 32-25-12 records, but the Flames have two more regulation wins.

Alex Tanguay (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames are only one point back of a playoff spot. On Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames defeated the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 5-3.
The Flames got a huge offensive performance from winger Alex Tanguay who notched a goal and three assists. The 32 year-old veteran from Ste-Justine, Quebec now has two goals and seven assists in his last five games.
Other Flames with big nights were Jarome Iginla (one goal, two assists), Olli Jokinen (three assists), and defenceman Mark Giordano (one goal and on assist).
Another Flame that has played well as of late has been Matt Stajan, the only Flame left from the Dion Phaneuf blockbuster trade with Toronto. Stajan got a first period goal and notched an assist on Tanguay’s second period game winner. He is also playing strong defensively at the moment too as head coach Brent Sutter is having him play with Iginla a little more.
Sven Baertschi, the Flames first round pick from the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, made his NHL debut. The Swiss native had one shot in 9:08 of ice time.
The Flames won despite being outshot 45-27. Mikka Kiprusoff made 42 saves in the victory. The Flames have 74 total points and are one point back of the San Jose Sharks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They next play the Minnesota Wild on Sunday afternoon.

The Calgary Flames were outstanding for a five minute stretch late in the first period Thursday night in Phoenix where they scored three goals en route to a 4-2 victory over the Coyotes.
Jarome Iginla led the way offensively with a goal and an assist– his goal coming late in the third period into an empty net. Alex Tanguay was the other Flame with a multi-point performance with two assists.
The Flames actually scored their three goals in a span of 3:14. Michael Cammalleri opened the scoring, followed by a shorthanded marker by Curtis Glencross and then nearly a second shorthanded goal by Olli Jokinen, but T.J. Brodie had come out of the penalty box three seconds earlier. Glencross and Jokinen each scored their 20th of the season.
The Flames showed the hockey world Thursday they didn’t need a complete 60-minute effort to win an important game down the stretch. The Coyotes dominated the second period, outshooting the Flames 15-6 before a relatively even third period.
The Flames now travel west to Anaheim to take on the Ducks tonight. They are currently two points back of Dallas for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
In other hockey action, you had to have been impressed with the Winnipeg Jets’ unbelievable effort in their 7-0 win over the Florida Panthers. Evander Kane led the way with two goals and two assists and Ondrej Pavelec recorded 33 saves for the shutout. Winnipeg now leads Washington by one point in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

The Calgary Flames beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 last night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Alex Tanguay led the way with a goal and two assists, but was surprisingly not given star status, despite being the best Flames skater according to the FAN 960′s Pat Steinberg and the Calgary Herald’s George Johnson.
Jarome Iginla and Olli Jokinen also played well by notching a goal and an assist each. With many injuries in the Flames lineup, the Tanguay-Jokinen-Iginla line has been spectacular in recent weeks and is a major reason why the Flames are currently only one point back of Phoenix for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They have been so good, they just might be the best line in hockey at the present time. What do you think?
Paul Byron added a goal on a second period penalty shot and Blake Comeau scored late in the third period to put the game out of reach. Miikka Kiprusoff added 41 saves.
The Flames next play the Dallas Stars tomorrow night.

Jarome Iginla (Wikimedia Commons)
The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames came away with victories during CBC’s annual Hockey Day in Canada.
For the Flames, it was a big 3-2 shootout win over the Vancouver Canucks.
Jarome Iginla scored the shootout winner past an angry Roberto Luongo, to keep the Flames within two points of the Phoenix Coyotes for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Mike Cammalleri and Roman Horak scored for the Flames in regulation, and Olli Jokinen also scored for the Flames in the shootout.
Before the game, the Flames honoured goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, who won his 300th career game Wednesday night in San Jose.
With the win, the Flames improve to 26-22-8 and will next play the Toronto Maple Leafs next on Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Oilers also won their game Saturday after regulation. Taylor Hall scored at the 17 second mark of overtime as Edmonton beat Ottawa 4-3. This was one of Nikolai Khabibulin’s best games all season. Khabibulin made 39 saves for his first win since December 22.
Ales Hemsky also played very well. He showed great stickhandling skills and recorded assists on goals by Shawn Horcoff and Magnus Paajarvi. Ben Eager also scored for the Oilers.
Edmonton next plays Toronto on Wednesday.

The Calgary Flames may have lost twice on a three game road trip against Pacific Division teams this past week, but the bottom line is they got points in all three games.
After Calgary’s 2-1 overtime loss to the Phoenix Coyotes last night, the Flames find themselves in the thick of things in the Western Conference playoff race. Currently, Calgary has a record of 25-22-8, and are only two points back of the Coyotes for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Flames are tied with the Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars for ninth place overall in the West.
The Flames should be very pleased with the recent play of Olli Jokinen, who has taken over the Flames lead in points with 46, two more than Jarome Iginla. In his last eight games, Jokinen has five goals and six assists. One area where Jokinen has been very productive as of late has been standing in front of the net where he has been a constant distraction for opposing goaltenders.
The other red hot Flame as of late is a Finn– veteran goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff who has been spectacular with his high quality saves. He is 24-17-4 with a 2.30 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.
The Flames next host Vancouver Saturday and Toronto Tuesday.

Miikka Kiprusoff (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)
Miikka Kiprusoff has now joined elite company. On Wednesday, Kiprusoff became the 27th goaltender in NHL history to record 300 wins in a 4-3 Calgary win over San Jose.
Even though Kiprusoff joins a very elite list, I don’t think it is as elite as TSN analyst Mike Johnson said it was. During his analysis of last night’s game, he stated that 300 wins for a goaltender is a more elite list than the 500 goal club where there are 42 players on the list. I know there are 15 more players to have recorded 500 goals than goaltenders with 300 wins, but it is much more difficult to get the 500 goal plateau because there have been over 25 times more players in NHL history that have played either forward or defense than goaltender.
A Flame that strongly impressed me last night was Kiprusoff’s Finnish teammate Olli Jokinen who scored three goals and an assist. I’m very disappointed right now because I had him on my bench in a prestigious hockey pool I’m in.
I will have to take the time however to criticize Flames defenceman Cory Sarich as well. Sarich fought Andrew Desjardins last night with his visor on– breaking a hockey code.
With the win, Calgary is one point back of Minnesota for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They next play in Phoenix tonight for the first time this season.
The Oilers meanwhile lost 4-2 to Detroit and will play in Ottawa next on Saturday.

The Calgary Flames moved closer to a playoff spot Friday night.
At the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Flames moved within three points of the Minnesota Wild for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with a 3-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Flames goal scorers Friday were Olli Jokinen, Jay Bouwmeester and Jarome Iginla. Jokinen’s goal was a top corner shot. Bouwmeester meanwhile came in from the point on the powerplay and Iginla deked Ray Emery after receiving a beautiful long pass from Alex Tanguay.
The Flames finally generated some offense after scoring only one goal in their last two games combined. Miikka Kiprusoff was also key as he recorded 26 saves in a game where he passed Mike Vernon as the Flames’ all-time leader in games played with 527.
In other Flames news, the team called up Calgary native Krystofer Kolanos from Abbotsford who played in his first NHL game in three years. Kolanos could be a very valuable part of the Flames offense because of his experience (11 goals with Phoenix in 2002) and the injuries to Curtis Glencross (on the injury reserve with a lower body injury), David Moss (possibly out for the season with an ankle injury) and Lee Stempniak out for the next six weeks with a high ankle sprain.
Calgary next plays in Anaheim on Monday night. The Blackhawks meanwhile have now lost five straight.

The Calgary Flames just might have recorded their most significant win of the 2011-12 National Hockey League season just two days before Christmas.
Leland Irving recorded 29 saves as the Flames defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 at Rogers Arena. For Irving it was his first career victory in the National Hockey League. The win was even more impressive because they had just beat Detroit the night before and were on their second game of a back-to-back.
A key turning point in the hockey game came in the third period when the Flames were up by a score of 1-0. Irving made a key save off of Canucks’ forward Christopher Higgins and then immediately afterwards the Flames killed off a key two minute powerplay for the Canucks due to a Chris Butler hooking minor.
Offensively, the Flames got their goals from Curtis Glencross, Mikael Backlund and Olli Jokinen. Glencross also picked up an assist, while Jarome Iginla had two helpers as well.
Calgary improves to 17-15-4, and are only one point back of the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference for a playoff spot. They next play in Columbus on Tuesday night.

Jarome Iginla (Wikimedia Commons)
The Calgary Flames are currently moving in an opposite direction than their provincial counterparts in the Western Conference Standings–that’s up.
On Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Jarome Iginla scored early in the second period to give the Flames a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild in a Northwest Division battle.
Iginla’s goal came from two Flames who are red hot in the statistical department– Olli Jokinen and Derek Smith. Jokinen now has 12 points in his last eight games, while Smith has five points in his last six games and is playing very well with the absence of Mark Giordano on the Flames’ blueline.
Miikka Kiprusoff was stellar in between the pipes, as he made 29 saves. Another positive area for the Flames on Tuesday was their physical presence. Flames winger Tom Kostopoulos fought Clayton Stoner and Tim Jackman fought Brad Staubitz.
With the win, the Flames move into a tenth place tie with the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference, and are only three points back of the San Jose Sharks and Phoenix Coyotes for a playoff spot.
The Flames next play Detroit on Thursday in Calgary before they go on a seven game road trip because of the World Junior Hockey Championships which start Boxing Day.

The Calgary Flames lost 3-2 to the Florida Panthers in a shootout Friday night, but in the process, moved one point ahead of the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Standings.
In Leland Irving’s first National Hockey League career game, the Barrhead, Alberta native made 39 saves, and looked very comfortable in between the Flames’ pipes. But at the end of the day, he couldn’t make the key game winning save in the shootout, allowing Dmitry Kulikov and Stephen Weiss to sneak the puck by him.
The best Flame on this night was Olli Jokinen, who was the only Flame with a multi-point game (one goal and one assist), and led the Flames with seven shots and 11 faceoffs won. Jokinen starred with the Panthers from 2000-2008, and is their all-time leading scorer with 419 points.
The Flames now move into a tie for tenth place in the Western Conference with the Los Angeles Kings at 32 points, three points back of the eighth place San Jose Sharks and Phoenix Coyotes.
Calgary’s next game is Sunday in Chicago.

The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames both lost Thursday night, but the Flames lost in overtime, meaning they are now tied with the Oilers for 11th place in the Western Conference standings.
Last night in Tampa Bay, 2010 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner Steven Stamkos scored his 19th goal of the season, just thirty seconds into overtime to give the Lightning a 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames.
The Flames however showed an exemplary effort in mounting a comeback to get themselves a single point. Rene Bourque and Olli Jokinen each scored for the Flames in the third period to tie the game at four, and get themselves a single point out of the contest.
The Oilers meanwhile lost 4-2 to the Phoenix Coyotes. Oliver Ekman-Larsson led Phoenix with a goal and an assist. Devan Dubnyk played well in net, but gave up a weak insurance goal to Ekman-Larsson to put Phoenix up by two late in the third period.
Calgary and Edmonton now have identical 14-14-3 records, and are tied for 11th in the Western Conference, four points back of the San Jose Sharks and Phoenix Coyotes.
Calgary next plays in Florida tonight, while the Oilers are in San Jose tomorrow night.

Alex Tanguay (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)
The Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames battle in Part Three of the Battle of Alberta tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome (CBC, 8pm). Oilers fans will hope a different chapter is written this time around after the first two were significantly similar. In both occasions, the Flames came from behind in the third period to grab two points in the Northwest Division standings.
On October 18, Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Tanguay each scored in the last six minutes as the Flames defeated the Oilers 2-1. Then last Saturday, Derek Smith, Mikael Backlund and Olli Jokinen scored third period goals for the Flames that eliminated a 3-2 lead for the Oilers en route to a 5-3 Calgary victory.
If Edmonton is going to contend for a playoff spot in March, better consistency throughout the entire 60 minutes is in order. Last night in their 4-1 win over Colorado, they had a solid third period effort while leading 4-1 and didn’t allow a strong quality scoring chance for the Avalanche in the final twenty minutes.
As for the Flames, they are back on track a little bit, at the .500 mark at 13-13-2. They are three points back of the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars and Oilers for the final two playoff spots in the Western Conference.
