More World Records set in the swimmimg pool

Monday, July 30th, 2012

There were two more Olympic Gold medals set in swimming Sunday at the London Aquatics Centre.

Dana Vollmer of the United States set a World Record in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 55.98, and Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa set a World Record in winning the men’s 100m breaststroke with a time of 58.46. France then shocked the United States in winning the 4x100m freestyle.

Meanwhile, middle distance runner Oscar Pistorius of South Africa and blind Korean archer Im Dong-Hyun are not the only two disabled athletes at the Olympic Games that are showing remarkable skill and inspiration.

This past weekend, the world was introduced to Polish table tennis player Natalia Partyka, who with only one arm, defeated Denmark’s Mie Skov 5-11, 11-3, 12-10, 8-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9 in five very dramatic sets. Partyka lost in the third round to Li Je of the Netherlands, but the amount of inspiration she has delivered is remarkable. Partyka will stay in London for the 2012 Paralympic Games.

Olympic performance that has impressed me the most

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

The 2012 Olympic Games are almost one day old, but the result that has impressed me the most so far came yesterday in the men’s archery.

Why? Well, South Korean archer Im Dong-hyun delivered Olympic greatness yesterday in breaking his own World record in the men’s 72 arrow mark and did so blind.

With all of the talk South African runner Oscar Pistorius is getting in athletics (will be running on prosthesis legs), what Im accomplished on Friday is amazing. Im finished the ranking round as the number one seed.

Random Friday Thoughts: Slow Sprint, Drogba Concussion, Howard Giraffe

Slow Sprint

Have you been keeping up with the IAAF World Championships in South Korea?

Let me get you up to date so far: Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt was disqualified in the 100m, double-amputee Oscar Pistorius helped get the South African team to the 4×100 final but was then replaced…and American Samoa’s Sogelau Tuvalu showed us that slow and steady doesn’t always win the race!

The 17-year-old failed to qualify for the shot put, his event of choice, and somehow ended up in a preliminary heat for the 100m instead.

He didn’t have the right shoes or anything, but Tuvalu channeled his inner Trevor “The Tortoise” Misipeka and gave it all he had. By the time the first of his competitors crossed the finish line, you couldn’t even see Tuvalu on the screen anymore. To his credit, he didn’t do any of the things I would worry about if I were in his position – he didn’t false start, he didn’t fall and he didn’t hurt himself! (After the Jump: Video of Tuvalu’s run, Didier Drogba gets knocked out, Dwight Howard dunks on a giraffe…) (more…)

Happy Monday!

This week on 15 Minutes of Fame: The Edmonton Eskimos drop two straight, but can they get back on track against BC? The Toronto Blue Jays get some solid contributions from a top prospect in a week where they’re accused of “stealing signs,” and a couple of former Oilers move on from the NHL for very different reasons.

In the GABBYs: Real Madrid, Oscar Pistorius, Eri Yoshida, the Lake County Fielders, the US ski team and Tiger Woods.
