Kerrzy’s Notebook: Goals of the Week!

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

The All-Star break didn’t leave us with many games around the NHL last week, but there was no shortage of highlight reel action before the players parted ways for a few days!

Since it would be a shame to put a goal from the no-defence All-Star game, as nice as it may have been, ahead of a beauty goal that happened with real points on the line, this edition of the GOTW won’t feature anything from this weekend. Here’s what I’ve got for you though: a penalty shot snipe, an incredible fake on a great goalie, a couple of unreal backhanders and a solid individual effort!

Let’s go!

5. Trevor Lewis

I’m not normally a fan of putting penalty shot goals on the list, but this dangle from LA’s Trevor Lewis is definitely worth another look. Sens fans might argue it shouldn’t count, because it shouldn’t have been a penalty shot, but there’s no doubt that Lewis made Craig Anderson look a bit silly with a couple of sweet fakes.

Sweden to play Finland in World Hockey Championship Final

It will be an all-Scandianavian final at the World Hockey Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Friday Finland defeated Russia 3-0 and Sweden defeated the Czech Republic 5-2. It will also be a rematch of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games’ Gold medal match where Sweden defeated Finland 3-2.

Mikael Granlund led the Finnish attack with a goal and an assist. In the second period, Granlund lifted the puck on to his stick behind the goal and went top shelf to beat Russian goalie Konstantin Barulin.

In any case, it will be a candidate for the goal of the year. Finnish goalie Petri Vehanen made 30 saves for the win.

In the other semi-final, Patrik Berglund of the St. Louis Blues continued his excellent World Hockey Championship by scoring two goals. He leads the tournament with eight. Mikael Backlund of the Calgary Flames also played a high level, notching a goal and an assist with seven shots on goal.

Around the Rinks: Torres on Eberle – Dirty or Clean?

Better prep the Wheel of Justice…

The NHL has another questionable hit to review after an Edmonton Oilers win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night at Rexall Place, and it’s a former Oiler who might be getting a phone call from Colin Campbell!

With just under seven minutes to go in the third period of what was then a 1-0 game, Raffi Torres lined up Oilers rookie Jordan Eberle in the Vancouver end, drilling him right in front of the ref. The arm went up instantly and Torres was given an elbowing major and a game misconduct, along with a fighting major for the scrap he got into with Ryan O’Marra, who immediately answered the bell for his teammate upon seeing the hit.
