Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals has won the 2013 Hart Trophy. Ovechkin was the primary reason why the Capitals won the Southeast Division. Ovechkin, who also won the Maurice Richard Trophy, led the NHL with 32 goals.

Other award winners included Paul MacLean of the Ottawa Senators as the Jack Adams Trophy winner for coach of the year, Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks as the Selke Trophy winner as best defensive forward, P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens as the Norris Trophy winner for best defenceman, Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets as the Vezina Trophy winner for best goaltender, Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning as the best gentlemanly player and Jonathan Huberdeau of the Florida Panthers as the best rookie.

The 2013 NHL Awards were given secondary status this season because of the lockout situation. A ceremony would have had to take place in July, after the draft and after free agency.

Weekend Sports Preview–Davis Cup, NHL, NBA, PGA

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Daniel Nestor (Wikimedia Commons)

One of the most exciting sporting events of the entire year  got under way last night in Vancouver.

For only the fourth time since 1923, Canada is  in the main World Group of  the Davis Cup, and yes folks there are reasons to be very excited.

Last night, Milos Raonic was dominant with his serve in his 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 win over France’s Julien Benneteau. Equally as dominant though was France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who beat Canada’s Vasek Pospisil yesterday afternoon 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.

Now the stage is set for exciting doubles action today. I know Milos Raonic is the best Canadian tennis player today, but you could make the serious case that Daniel Nestor is the greatest Canadian tennis player ever. Nestor is a doubles specialist, who has a remarkable career record of 830-318. The seven-time major winner is still going great at age 39 and is currently ranked number three in the world. Like Steve Nash who I discussed yesterday, Daniel Nestor is playing at an elite level which is truly amazing to watch. Nestor along with Pospisil will play the French duo of Michael Llodra and Benneteau with the Canadian team favoured to win the match (Sportsnet, 3pm).

Play will continue Sunday (Sportsnet, 3pm) with Raonic taking on Tsonga and a fifth match with possible meaning. The two have never faced each other.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Senators down Flames 3-1

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

The Calgary Flames got beaten by Bobby Butler on Tuesday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Butler scored twice in the final period as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Calgary Flames 3-1 to win their first game in Calgary since 2003.

Butler’s game winning goal and insurance goal were of a highlight reel variety. Twice he came down the wing and delivered an outstanding shot to get the puck past Miikka Kiprusoff.

His first goal came at 9:50 of the third period from Sergei Gonchar and Chris Phillips, while his second was from Jesse Winchester and Erik Karlsson.

For Butler it was only his first two goals of the season after scoring ten a year ago in 36 games. If he continues to perform offensively, don’t be surprised if he rises on Head Coach Paul MacLean’s depth chart. He is currently seeing fourth line minutes with enforcer Zenon Konopka and Winchester.

With the win, the Senators improve to 9-9-1, and in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, while the Flames drop to 7-9-1 and remain in last place in the Northwest.

The other deals

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

Brian Campbell (Wikimedia Commons)

The weekend was headlined by the Oilers reacquiring Ryan Smyth, the Flames trading Robyn Regehr, and the two blockbuster deals involving the Philadelphia Flyers.

But there were some others. Let’s take a look at the other moves.

On Saturday, the Columbus Blue Jackets traded left winger Nikita Filatov to the Ottawa Senators for a third round draft pick. Filatov is overrated. He never fit into Columbus’ offensive game plan, so why would I think he could fit in to any other team in the NHL? He only has six goals and seven assists in 44 games. If he couldn’t play for Ken Hitchcock or Scott Arniel, he won’t for Paul MacLean.

The New York Islanders traded defenceman Bruno Gervais to the Tampa Bay Lightning for future considerations. I think a lot more about Gervais than Filatov. Even though he is a career -60, he has played six seasons with the struggling Islanders. I like his ability to block shots. He has 182 of them in the last two years.

The Florida Panthers acquired defenceman Brian Campbell from the Chicago Blackhawks for right winger Rostislav Olesz. Campbell has played in 626 career games, and at one time was considered an elite NHL defenceman. Despite reduced offensive production the last two years, he still was a +46 on a solid Blackhawks’ team. Olesz only had six goals and 11 assists last year, and I don’t see his production improve significantly in Chicago.

MacLean named head coach of the Senators

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Paul MacLean (Bing Images)

The Ottawa Senators named their 17th head coach today.

The club named Paul MacLean to lead the team for the 2010-11 National Hockey League season.

Known for his unique moustache, MacLean spent the last six seasons as the assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings under head coach Mike Babcock. In 2008, the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup, as they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games.

Prior to that, MacLean was the assistant coach for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for two seasons (2002-04) when Babcock was the head coach there as well.

MacLean does have head coaching experience in the past. He spent three years each as the head coach of the Peoria Rivermen and Kansas City Blades of the International Hockey League. MacLean was also the head coach of the Quad City Mallards of the United League from 2000-02. In his first season with the Mallards, MacLean won the Colonial Cup Championship.
