Great day for former Oiler Adam Oates

Adam Oates, one of the most underrated players in the history of the National Hockey League has been named the head coach of the Washington Capitals and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame today as well.

Oates,  five-time NHL all-star, had 341 goals and 1079 assists and 1420 points with the Detroit Red Wings, Saint Louis Blues, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers from 1985-2004. Oates’ lone year playing in Edmonton came in 2003-04, when he finished his NHL career, scoring two goals and 16 assists in 60 games.

Oates joins Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche, Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pavel Bure of the Vancouver Canucks.

Since his retirement, Oates was an assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Lightning for one year and the New Jersey Devils for two seasons.

The Capitals had a vacancy at their head coaching position when Dale Hunter decided to return to the London Knights.
