Matt Carle (Rhys Asplundh, Wikimedia Commons)
I think it is fair to say the Edmonton Oilers are running out of elite defencemen on the free agency market to sign.
Last night the Tampa Bay Lightning snagged one defenceman I thought the Oilers should have gone after in Matt Carle.
The Lightning signed Carle to a six year contract worth $33 million. Carle had a respectable season with the Philadelphia Flyers, recording 38 points in 82 games.
But thumbs up to Tambellini for not spending that type of money on Carle.
So who is left? Remember, at this stage of the game the Oilers would be better off with a stay at home defenceman that can play big minutes, rather than one who is very offensive skilled. That is what Justin Schultz will be used for.
The top five free agents available who could fit right into what the Oilers are looking for are Scott Hannan from Calgary, Carlo Colaiacovo from St. Louis, Michal Rozsival of Phoenix, Matt Gilroy from Ottawa and Pavel Kubina from Philadelphia.
The Oilers simply need to sign one more defenceman to get in contention for a playoff spot.

It was quite the day for Kyle Quincey on Tuesday.
First he was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Steve Downie and then moments later was traded to the Detroit Red Wings for a first round pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and minor league defenceman Sebastien Piche.
Quincey notched five goals and 18 assists and was a -1. He joins a Red Wings already with a solid defense with Mike Commodore, Nicklas Lidstrom, Niklas Kronwall, Brad Stuart and Ian White.
One area where the Red Wings put a lot of emphasis is an experienced defence more than anything else and Tuesday was just the latest example of that.
Detroit currently has 84 points and leads Vancouver by two points for first place in the Western Conference Standings and first place for the President’s Cup.
This is the second time Quincey will have joined Detroit. He was a Red Wing from 2005-2008 to begin his NHL career. He was then claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Kings before being traded to Colorado in the 2009 Ryan Smyth blockbuster.
In another weekend move, the Philadelphia Flyers reacquired defenceman Pavel Kubina from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a second round pick, fourth round pick and a minor leaguer. Like Quincey, this is Kubina’s second time with his current NHL team. Kubina has also previously played with Toronto and Atlanta. In 53 games, he has three goals and eight assists.

Colin Campbell is a busy man these days!
The NHL’s head disciplinarian kicked off the 2011 playoffs by handing out a couple of early suspensions to LA’s Jarret Stoll (one game) and Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan (two games). He followed that up by deciding not to suspend Vancouver’s Raffi Torres for a controversial hit on Sunday night (even though Torres probably deserved at least a game or two), which drew the ire of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Well, after Monday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning, it looks like he’s got another couple of decisions to make! Tampa’s Steve Downie and Pittsburgh’s Chris Kunitz will both be hearing from the league on Tuesday, though my guess is that Kunitz will be the one facing a ban for his actions. (After the jump: Watch both incidents, plus an UPDATE on the situation) (more…)

The NHL’s Hockey Operations department has been a busy bunch this week, ever since the league’s general managers called for tougher supplementary discipline at their annual meeting in Florida.
Since that request was made, the NHL has slapped San Jose’s Dany Heatley and Boston’s Brad Marchand with two game suspensions for pretty blatant elbows during Tuesday night’s action. On Thursday night, Nashville Predators forward Patric Hornqvist gave them a pretty good opportunity to make it three suspensions in three days when he rocked Bruins rookie Tyler Seguin with a headshot late in the first period, earning a major penalty and a game misconduct.
With Seguin turning up the boards in his own end, Hornqvist skated in and elbowed him in the side of the head, messing up his ear lobe and cutting him for seven stitches.
Right as contact is about to be made, Seguin takes a peek down at his feet to see where the puck is, but there’s no reason for Hornqvist to come flying in with his elbow that high! Also, it’s pretty tough to argue that you didn’t just clock a guy in the head when he’s got blood dripping out of his ear! (VIDEO after the jump!) (more…)

More Chara
It’s Day Three of “CharaGate” in the hockey world as the fallout continues from the hit that left Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty with a fractured vertebrae and a severe concussion…
Day One featured some “he better be suspended,” a lot of “I can’t believe he wasn’t suspended,” and even some “we’ll pull our sponsorship money!” On Day Two though we saw some even more interesting developments…(After the jump: Kubina suspended, FAIL of the week & more!) (more…)
