Chip Kelly (Wikimedia Commons)
The Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars have decided on coaches for the 2012 National Football season.
The Eagles have gone with a familiar face, choosing Chip Kelly, out of the University of Oregon. Kelly, an offensive minded coach should appease Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, but the bottom line is will the 2012 Philadelphia Eagles be able to finish long drives?
This past season, they had no problem moving the ball between the 20 yard lines, but simply couldn’t finish drives.
It will also be interesting to see if Kelly is successfully able to make the transition from college to the pros with his offensive run and gun style. I recent years, Steve Spurrier lacked success in Washington and Nick Saban lacked success in Miami.

Andy Reid (Moses Ross, Wikimedia Commons)
Andy Reid was only out of work as a head coach in the National Football League for three full days.
On Friday, Reid signed a five year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.
I guess the Chiefs are getting an improvement. Reid was 4-12 while coaching the Philadelphia Eagles during the regular season, while the Chiefs were 2-14 this year.
However, the 4-12 record Reid posted this last year, was by far Red’s worst. In 14 years as Philadelphia’s head coach, Reid went 130-93-1 and made the playoffs nine times.
Kansas City also announced that they have parted ways with general manager Scott Pioli.
Pioli will probably get a fresh start somewhere else after witnessing linebacker Jovan Belcher commit suicide on December 1.

Robert Griffin III (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
There are four games that matter immensely in the National Football League this weekend–the two NFC East matchups and the NFC North matchups.
The winner of Washington-Dallas (Sunday, NBC, 6 p.m.) wins the NFC East. Despite winning six straight games, the Redskins (9-6) may have to win a seventh to qualify for the postseason. In their first game on American Thanksgiving Day, Robert Griffin III had four touchdown passes, and 311 passing yards in a 38-31 Washington win. The Dallas Cowboys (8-7) are eliminated from the playoffs with a loss.
If Washington loses, they can still qualify for the postseason with a Minnesota loss to Green Bay (Sunday, FOX, 2 p.m.) and a Chicago loss to Detroit (Sunday, TSN2, 11 a.m.).
The Vikings (9-6) are in a difficult spot as they have to host the Packers (11-4), who are battling San Francisco for the number two seed. Minnesota clinches a playoff spot with a win and could also get into the playoffs with a Washington win, Detroit win and Philadelphia win over the New York Giants (Sunday, FOX, 11 a.m.).

The Canada Cup of Curling will be having its playoffs this weekend from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Two Alberta teams are still in the mix–Calgary’s Kevin Koe and Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin.
Koe (4-2) will be playing an early morning tie-breaker against Manitoba’s Mike McEwen (Saturday, TSN, 7:00 a.m.) with the winner playing Glenn Howard in the men’s semi-final (Saturday, TSN, 5:30 p.m.). The winner of the semi-final will then play Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg in Sunday’s final (TSN, 1:30 p.m.).
On the women’s side, Nedohin will face Team Jones (without Jennifer Jones who gave birth two weeks ago) in the semi-final, and then Stefanie Lawton of Saskatchewan in Sunday’s championship final (TSN, 8:30 a.m.).

Tom Brady (Keith Allison, Wikimedia Commons)
I am 80-53 on the season following Indianapolis’ 27-10 win over Jacksonville Thursday night. The Colts played excellent defense with Darius Butler leading the way with two interceptions, one for an eleven yard touchdown early in the second half.
Here are my Week 10 picks:
11am
NY Giants over Cincinnati–The Bengals D has been horrible over the last three weeks.

I will be watching four kinds of football this weekend–the professional and collegiate variety from both sides of the border.
Obviously the biggest games are the Canadian Football League’s divisional semi-finals.
In the East, the Toronto Argonauts are hosting the Edmonton Eskimos (Sunday, 11am, TSN) in a game that is featuring former Eskimo Ricky Ray, now at quarterback for Toronto. The Eskimos finished the season at 7-11 and the Argonauts at 9-9. However Edmonton did beat Toronto in both meetings this year, 19-15 on June 30 and 26-17 on August 27.

Michael Vick (Wikimedia Commons)
I am now 69-50 on the season after San Diego’s impressive defensive performance Thursday night where they completely shut down the Chiefs offense. Both Demorrio Williams and Shaun Phillips recorded fourth quarter touchdowns on a 58 yard interception return and a fumble in the end zone in a 31-13 victory.
Here are the rest of my Week 9 picks:
11am
Miami over Indianapolis–The Dolphins defense against the Jets last week was excellent and will win a second straight road game even though Dolphins starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill has a sore ankle.
Houston over Buffalo–The Texans are better on offense and defense. Could be over by noon.
Baltimore over Cleveland–The Ravens might have got spanked by the Texans in their last game, but have had two weeks off since to figure out what went wrong.
Denver over Cincinnati–Peyton Manning is looking great. He is now third in passing yards (behind Brady and Brees) with 2301 (more…)

Milos Raonic (Chris Johnson, Wikimedia Commons)
This is currently one of the most exciting times in Canadian tennis. Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ontario achieved greatness again Friday night when he defeated U.S. Open and Olympic champion Andy Murray of Great Britain in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 at the Japan Open in Tokyo.
Raonic saved off two match points in the third set and was able to break Murray back after being down 4-1 in the final set.
Raonic also performed admirably while not serving in the third set, something he has struggled with in his career. He will now face Japan’s Kei Nishikori in tonight’s final (11pm, Sportsnet One). Raonic is also seeking his third title of the season, having won in Chennai and San Jose earlier in the year.

Phil Mickelson (Steven Newton, Wikimedia Commons)
The 39th Ryder Cup is currently taking place just outside of Chicago. On Day 1, the Americans took an early 5-3 lead on Europe thanks to some brilliant shot making by Keegan Bradley, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Jason Dufner.
On day two (Saturday, NBC, 7am), there will be four foursome matches in the morning, followed by four fourball matches in the afternoon. The best morning matchup will be Bradley and Mickelson against England’s Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. An interesting morning omission by Davis Love III is Tiger Woods, who played much better in the afternoon on Friday in four ball action than he did in the foursome with partner Steve Stricker in the morning.
Another golfer to watch out for on Saturday is Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, who will be teamed with Spain’s Sergio Garcia against Americans Zach Johnson and Jason Dufner. Colsaerts had eight birdies and an eagle on Friday afternoon.
The Ryder Cup will then conclude Sunday with singles play (NBC, 10am).

The Edmonton Eskimos will try to snap a two game losing streak to their provincial rivals, the Calgary Stampeders, when they face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium this afternoon (TSN, 1pm).
The Eskimos may be sitting last in the Western Division at 5-5, but with a victory can move an important six points up on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in a possible opportunity to cross-over in the East come playoff time, if they cannot make up ground on the 5-5 Saskatchewan Roughriders.
This week the Eskimos and Tiger-Cats also made a trade. Edmonton acquired fullback Darcy Brown from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for defensive back Ricardo Colclough and a sixth round pick in the 2015 Canadian Football League draft.

Super Bowl Logo (Wikimedia Commons)
Is it me, or does anyone disagree with the notion that there still should be two weeks between the NFL Conference Championships and the Super Bowl?
For those that just might have forgotten, the New England Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 in the AFC Championship and the New York Giants beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 in overtime for the NFC Championship to set up Sunday’s big game from Indianapolis.
If you watched the Pro Bowl in Hawaii this past weekend, and apparently saw Brandon Marshall of the Miami Dolphins record four touchdown receptions, shame on you. How can you have an All-Star Game when the two best teams in the league aren’t represented?

It may be the Christmas season, but it is a very big weekend on the world sport stage. On Boxing Day, the sports world will be focused on Alberta for the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championship. The event is significant because it is the first time that Edmonton and Calgary, two bitter provincial rivals have joined forces to host a world class sporting event. Edmonton will host all of Team Canada’s round robin games, with Calgary hosting the medal round.
Team Canada’s first game is Monday at 1:30pm against Finland (TSN). Both teams have something in common. They both lost to Russia in the medal round at the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championships in Buffalo. Finland lost 4-3 to Russia in the quarterfinals, while Canada lost 5-3 to Russia in the Gold medal game.

The 99th Grey Cup gets under way tomorrow at B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver with a game between the B.C. Lions and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (TSN, 4:30pm).
The Lions are trying to become the first team since 1994 to win the Grey Cup on home soil. But they will have a lot of Edmonton Eskimo fans cheering against them after head coach Wally Buono’s ridiculous comment last week of “I hate Edmonton.”
The Lions have the Grey Cup MVP in Travis Lulay, while the Blue Bombers’ have the league’s top defensive player in Jovon Johnson.
There have been some interesting storylines heading into the Grey Cup. Blue Bombers’ defensive end Odelle Willis tweeted this past week how he wanted to go home to American Thanksgiving rather than practicing on Thursday, and said “a couple of more days and I’m out of this hoe.”
Also, hall of famers, Angelo Mosca and Joe Kapp got into a fight at an alumni luncheon in Vancouver after the two discussed a play in 1963 when Mosca’s hit knocked Lions’ running back Willie Fleming out of the game.
Getting back to the Blue Bombers and Lions, the Blue Bombers beat the Lions twice this year, 25-20 on July 28 in Winnipeg and 30-17 on August 13 in Vancouver.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

The Edmonton Eskimos are only one win away from the 99th Grey Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia next weekend.
On Sunday, they will have to find a way to beat the Lions without star running back Jerome Messam. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I find the possibility of the Eskimos’ running game getting going is still there because the Lions’ defensive line and ability to stop the run has sometimes been a weakness, even with Solomon Elimimian and Brent Johnson leading the way.
But the Eskimos will need to find a way themselves to do a better job in stopping quarterback Travis Lulay, the Western Division nominee for the Canadian Football League’s most outstanding player award. In the Lions’ 29-20 win over Edmonton on October 29, Lulay had three touchdown passes for 322 yards.
