Blackhawks beat Bruins in triple OT

Thursday, June 13th, 2013

The Chicago Blackhawks needed triple overtime, but at the end of the day got the job done Wednesday night in game one of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Andrew Shaw scored with 7:52 left in triple overtime as Chicago defeated Boston 4-3. It was the fifth  longest game in Stanley Cup Finals history. The Edmonton Oilers’ win over Boston in game one of the 1990 Stanley Cup Finals remains the longest.

As a team the Blackhawks fired 63 shots on Boston goaltender Tuukka Rask. The Blackhawks also overcame two penalties in overtime for having too many players on the ice and a shot from the point from Bruins’ defenceman Zdeno Chara that hit the post.

Weekend Sports Preview–April 6 & 7–Davis Cup, NHL, NBA, MLB, World Men’s Curling Championship, March Madness,

Saturday, April 6th, 2013

Daniel Nestor (Wikimedia Commons)

This weekend is an extremely significant one when it comes to the history of Canadian tennis. Team Canada is tied 1-1 with Team Italy in the quarterfinals heading into a key doubles match today and two singles matches on Sunday.

This afternoon (Saturday, Sportsnet, 4:30 p.m., joined in progress) Daniel Nestor of Toronto and Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver will take on the Italian pair of Paolo Lorenzi and Daniele Braccaili. It will be interesting to see how much energy Pospisil has in the tank after he lost a five set marathon to Andreas Seppi on Friday afternoon. Canadian head coach Martin Laurendeau ridiculously went with Pospisil over Jesse Levine, who is overall a much better tennis player.

Sunday’s matches are right now Milos Raonic versus Seppi (Saturday, Sportsnet, 3:00 p.m.) followed by Pospisil versus Fabio Fognini.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Rangers/Blue Jackets blockbuster headlines NHL trade deadline day

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Marian Gaborik (Wikimedia Commons)

So far there have been 15 NHL trades on trade deadline day, but none more were bigger than the trade between the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers.

On Wednesday, the Jackets acquired Marian Gaborik from the Rangers for forwards Derek Dorsett (an enforcer with offensive upside who is hurt right now but might be ready in time for the playoffs), Derrick Brassard, defenceman John Moore and a sixth round pick.

This trade is interesting primarily because the Blue Jackets and Rangers made a blockbuster deal that involved Rick Nash in the summer of 2012.

In other moves, the Penguins acquired shootout specialist Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks reacquired defenceman Scott Hannan from the Nashville Predators and Raffi Torres from the Phoenix Coyotes, the Minnesota Wild acquired Jason Pominville from the Mnnesota Wild, the Phoenix Coyotes also sent forward Steve Sullivan to the New Jersey Devils and Matthew Lombardi to the Anaheim Ducks, the St. Louis Blues sent Wade Redden to the Boston Bruins, and the Colorado Avalanche sent Ryan O’Byrne to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Wild beat Flames 2-1 in overtime

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

The Calgary Flames exemplified some very positive signs on Tuesday, but at the end of the day could only salvage a single point.

Zach Parise scored at the twenty-seven second mark of overtime as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Flames 2-1. Parise’s goal came on the power play after Flames’ defenceman Mark Giordano took a penalty in the final minute of the third period for covering the puck with his glove.

Wild rookie forward Jason Zucker also scored his second career goal to tie the score with 4:19 left. Zucker’s statistical line of one goal, a plus one and three shots was impressive for the limited action of seven minutes he saw on the ice.

Concussions remain an issue in the NHL

Tuesday, February 26th, 2013

Evgeni Malkin (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)

The Pittsburgh Penguins are once again out with one of their star players, however this time his name is not Sidney Crosby.

On the weekend the Penguins put Evgeni Malkin on the injury reserve with a concussion. Malkin had scored four goals and 17 assists in 18 games. Obviously his numbers were off from his Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy numbers from last season, but Malkin is still an elite player in the NHL when he wants to be.

Malkin joins a long list of notable players currently out with a head trauma injury. The list includes Marc Savard of the Boston Bruins, Jeff Skinner of the Carolina Hurricanes, Rene Bourque of the Montreal Canadiens, Ryan Carter of the New Jersey Devils, Darroll Powe of the New York Rangers, Guillaume Latendresse of the Ottawa Senators, Chris Pronger of the Philadelphia Flyers and Vladimir Tarasenko of the Saint Louis Blues.

Awareness of concussions is greater today than ever before, however players are still experiencing them as an injury. It will be interesting to see if the NHL will make a statement or consider greater disciplinary measures against enforcers if the numbers continue to grow.

Predators surprisingly match Flyers’ offer for Weber

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Shea Weber (Sean Russell, Wikimedia Commons)

The Philadelphia Flyers think defenceman Shea Weber is great.

Apparently so do the Nashville Predators. On Tuesday the Predators re-signed Weber to a 14 year deal worth $110 million, matching the contract offer set by the Philadelphia Flyers last week.

Can Nashville really afford their prized defenceman? Who else can they afford to assist Weber as they move forward?

Last season Weber had 19 goals and 49 points, but will his numbers go down with the team losing Ryan Suter to the Minnesota Wild in the offseason?

Will the Predators be forced to rebuild and where will the money come from? Did Nashville make the right move also on Tuesday in announcing the re-signing of Colin Wilson and Sergei Kostitsyn? Wilson was re-signed to a three year contract worth $6 million.

Is Sam Gagner really worth $3.2 million?

Friday, July 20th, 2012

Sam Gagner (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)

The Edmonton Oilers came to terms with restricted free agent Sam Gagner on Friday to a one year deal worth $3.2 million.

I know Gagner had a remarkable game where he set the Oilers record with eight one amazing night against the Chicago Blackhawks this season.

But after that, Gagner’s numbers could only be considered average, with 39 points in the other 74 games he played.

The Oilers have decided Gagner is now a veteran, even though he is 22 years of age, and will be used to mentor the long list of talented young guns.

But really? At $3.2 million? Wouldn’t Edmonton Oilers General Manager have been better off plying some hardball and using the money on a defenceman or gpaltender? Devan Dubnyk is not the answer.

The Gagner signing comes one day after the Philadelphia Flyers made headlines by offering all-star defenceman Shea Weber to a 14 year deal worth $110 million. The Nashville Predators now have until Wednesday to match the offer. It’s too bad nobody offered Gagner a fraction of that amount.

Numerous trades at the NHL Entry Draft– Carolina & Washington improved the most

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

Jordan Staal (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)

I know it is a big time for many prospects on the weekend of the NHL Entry Draft, but I am more interested in the wheeling and dealing that takes place among the clubs.

The Carolina Hurricanes and the Pittsburgh Penguins delivered the biggest blockbuster of the weekend. The Penguins, unable to come to terms with Jordan Staal long term, traded Staal to the Hurricanes for centre Brandon Sutter, their first round pick and a prospect.

Staal, considered by many to be one of the best natural centremen in the game today, will join his brother Eric in Carolina.

This past season Staal had 25 goals and 25 assists in 62 games, while Sutter had 17 goals and 15 assists in 82 games.

The Dallas Stars dumped salary by trading Mike Ribeiro to the Washington Capitals for forward Cody Eakin and a second round pick in 2012. Ribeiro had 18 goals and 45 assists this past season.

Devils move on to Eastern Final–How good can Brodeur be?

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Martin Brodeur (James Teterenko, Wikimedia Commons)

The New Jersey Devils have advanced to the Eastern Conference Final. On Tuesday night in Philadelphia, the Devils defeated the Flyers 3-1 to win the Eastern Conference Semi-Final 4-1.

Ilya Kovalchuk led the Devils with a goal and an assist while Calder Trophy candidate Adam Henrique also had a multi-point game with a pair of assists. Meanwhile, Martin Brodeur made 27 saves. Brodeur is now a perfect 2-0 in his career since turning 40 and has made 47 saves on 50 save attempts.

Bryce Salvador and David Clarkson also scored for the Devils.

The Flyers just seemed to run into a hot goaltender in Brodeur, something they didn’t face in round one when they easily scored on Marc-Andre Fleury.

My major question now is how much does Martin Brodeur have left in the tank the rest of the way? Does he have enough remarkable skill to win one more Stanley Cup and fourth of his career? Please let us know at www.anysportanytime.ca.

Kings make history in sweeping Blues–are they now for real?

Monday, May 7th, 2012

For the first time in Stanley Cup Playoffs history a number eight seed has defeated a number one and number two seed in the same season.

Sunday afternoon Dustin Brown scored twice as the Los Angeles Kings beat the Saint Louis Blues 3-1 to sweep the Western Conference Semi-Final 4-0.

The Kings won game four despite being outshot 13-2 by St. Louis in the second period.

Is it time to take the Kings for real? I think it is. But I want to make something clear. This is not your typical number eight seed. They were in third place up until the last few days of the season, were in fact my pick before the season to win the Stanley Cup, and have had great goaltending from Jonathan Quick all season long.

The big difference is the players that were expected to produce all season long are finally performing more consistently.

Weekend Sports Preview–May 5 & 6–WHL Playoffs,Stanley Cup Playoffs, NBA Playoffs, MLB, Kentucky Derby, World Hockey Chmpionships

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Jordan Eberle (Wikimedia Commons)

Team Canada will have a chance to build off of their tight 3-2 victory over Slovakia yesterday when they face their American archrival nemesis this morning at the World Hockey Championships in Helsinki (TSN, 10am).

The Americans are coming off a commanding opening victory over France yesterday where they won 7-2.

Even though, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Devan Dubnyk and Jordan Eberle missed the playoffs for the Edmonton Oilers, this tournament could be valuable experience for them.

An American Oilers fans would be familiar with is defenceman Jeff Petry, who is joined on the American blueline with Jack Johnson, Alex Goligoski and Cam Fowler.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:

Saturday–NHL Eastern Conference Semi-Final Game 4–New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals–10:30am–NBC–After coming off the longest game of the playoffs Wednesday night (game went into triple overtime), the Capitals will try to tie the series at two games apiece. Brad Richards continues to produce in the playoffs. The former Conn Smythe Trophy winner leads the Rangers in playoff scoring with nine points. For the Rangers to get by Washington however, they will need more from Artem Anisimov and Ruslan Fedotenko. They combined for 25 regular season goals, but only have a combined total of one goal in the playoffs.

Saturday–MLB–Arizona Diamondacks @ New York Mets–1:30pm–FOX–Despite only hitting .254 last season, Mets third baseman David Wright has got off to a great start in 2012, batting  .395 with eight extra base hits. Last night J.J. Putz recorded his sixth save of the season as Arizona defeated the New York Mets 5-4. Arizona is 14-13 while the NY Mets are 13-13.

Kings take command on the Blues

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Drew Doughty (Wikimedia Commons)

The Los Angeles Kings are doing the same thing they did to the St. Louis Blues as they did to the Vancouver Canucks in round one.

They are basically steamrolling by their opposition.

Thursday night, the Kings were by far the dominant team in a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Blues to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

Defenceman Drew Doughty led the Kings offensively with a goal and two assists. Mike Richards and Anze Kopitar also had multi-point games, who are now 7-1 in the postseason and are one win away from defeating the no.1 and no.2 seeds in the West.

Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick didn’t give up a bad goal, unlike Blues netminder Brian Elliott who was very shaky in net. However one thing I feel Quick needs to do a better job with is his decisions with the puck. He was wandering a little too much this evening and it almost cost him on more than one occasion.

Meanwhile in the East, the New Jersey Devils got an overtime winner from Alexei Ponikarovsky to defeat the Philadelphia  Flyers 4-3 and take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

Larsson leads Devils to win in Philadelphia

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Adam Larsson (Wikimedia Commons)

There was one thing that was  going through my head while watching Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal.

Was Larsson a defenceman the Edmonton Oilers let slip away? After watching Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in his first season, I say no, but at the same time it was interesting to see Larsson play so well in his very first postseason game.

The 19 year-old Swede got his chance to suit up in the playoffs when Devils Head Coach Peter DeBoer decided to move defenceman Peter Harrold to right wing because of the injury to sniper Ilya Kovalchuk.

Larsson made the most of his opportunity, scoring a goal, was a +2 and had five blocked shots.

After trailing 1-0 after the first period, the Devils dominated the third period scoring four unanswered goals on Ilya Bryzgalov en route to a 4-1 win.

Game three shifts to New Jersey Thursday night with the series notched at a game apiece.

Ovechkin scores winner despite limited minutes

Monday, April 30th, 2012

Alexander Ovechkin (Wikimedia Commons)

Alexander Ovechkin was spectacular when Washington needed him most in Game two of the Eastern Conference Semi-Final.

Ovechkin scored the game winning goal while Rangers forward Brad Richards was in the penalty box with 7:27 left in the final period.

Despite only playing 13:36 of the game, six minutes fewer than teammate Jay Beagle, Ovechkin had a game high seven shots on net as Washington tied the series at one with a 3-2 win. A major reason why Ovechkin saw his ice time dip is because it appears Head Coach Dale Hunter was not satisfied with his defensive play. Should he have been on the ice more?

The other interesting result Monday came from the eighth seeded Los Angeles Kings who had an offensive explosion in the first period against the St. Louis Blues. This is the second straight series that the Kings seemed to have their opponent off guard. Anze Kopitar scored twice and Dustin Brown had three assists as Los Angeles defeated St. Louis 5-2 to take a 2-0 Western Conference Semi-Final lead. The Kings are now a perfect 5-0 on the road in the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
