It looks more and more like the Edmonton Oilers will not make the postseason in 2013. However, there is a still a mathematical chance after their impressive 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.
The Oilers played a complete hockey game Friday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Jordan Eberle scored one goal and two assists, while Justin Schultz and Magnus Paajarvi had multi-point games.
The Oilers are now eight points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets with five games to go in the season. The next game on their schedule will be Sunday night against the Anaheim Ducks (Sportsnet, 6:00 p.m.). It is basically simple. Their remaining five games, of which four are at home, are mandatory for the Oilers to win.
The Edmonton Oilers might have just blown their last realistic chance of qualifying for the postseason Wednesday night against the Phoenix Coyotes.
In a 3-1 loss to Phoenix, the Oilers remain four points back of the Detroit Red Wings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with eight games to go.
The Oilers were completely outplayed in the second period where Phoenix out shot Edmonton 12-7 and scored the first two goals of the contest from Boyd Gordon and Antoine Vermette.
The Oilers continue to struggle in games at home immediately after a road trip. So far this season, they are 2-5.
The Calgary Flames delivered a heroic comeback Sunday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
With the game tied 4-4, Curtis Glencross scored with exactly one minute left in regulation, to give the Flames a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.
According to TSN, the Flames are now at 7-7-3 and are two points back of the San Jose Sharks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the tight Western Conference. Four points are currently separating 5th place and 13th place. The Flames are currently in twelfth position. The Oilers and Flames have the same record of 7-7-3, but the Flames have more regulation wins.
Glencross, who added an assist, was one of five Flames to have a multi-point game. Jarome Iginla scored twice, including the game tying goal with 1:23 left, while Lee Stempniak, Alex Tanguay and Chris Butler all had two assists.
The Edmonton Oilers got a much needed victory before they embark on a huge road trip Saturday.
Jordan Eberle scored in regulation and the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 at Rexall Place.
Teemu Hartikainen scored the game tying goal for the Oilers with 11:56 left in the third period on the power play after Keith Yandle took a tripping penalty on Ales Hemsky which should have gone to Rostislav Klesla.
With the win, the Oilers are one point back of the Los Angeles Kings for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Kings defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Saturday.
The playoffs are now set for the 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. After a solid week, Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones made history Friday night in Kingston, Ontario, by becoming the first female skip to go a perfect 12-0 in the round robin of the national curling championship. Manitoba will now play Ontario’s Rachel Homan in the 1-2 playoff game (Saturday, TSN, 5:00 p.m.) with the winner advancing to the final (Sunday, TSN, 5:00 p.m.) and the loser playing the winner of the 3-4 game between British Columbia’s Kelly Scott and Canada’s Heather Nedohin (Saturday, TSN, 12:00 p.m.) in the semi-final (Sunday, TSN, 7:00 a.m.).
The Calgary Flames played like a team who were playing their second game of a back-to-back Monday night in Phoenix.
Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith made 30 saves and Raffi Torres and Antoine Vermette had a goal and an assist each as Phoenix defeated Calgary 4-0.
David Moss and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also had a multi-point game as they each had two assists. The Coyotes’ defencemen of Ekman-Larsson and Zbynek Michalek were each a +3 for the Coyotes according to www.tsn.ca.
Defenceman Keith Yandle scored the game winning goal for the Coyotes only 41 seconds into the hockey game.
Coyotes captain Shane Doan is still playing strong. At 36 years of age he caused havoc throughout the night and was making Flames’ goaltender Danny Taylor’s night uncomfortable. Taylor was making his first start in his NHL career.
The 2013 Scotties Tournament of Hearts starts today from Kingston, Ontario. For the first time since 1999 Team Canada is from Alberta.
Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin will be wearing the Canadian colours this week and will be participating field. Her first opponent this weekend is New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford (formerly Kelly), a six-time provincial champion, an impressive statistic when you realize Crawford is only 27. The opening draw is on TSN Saturday at noon mountain time.

Trailing 1-0 late in the game, Nick Johnson tied the score with 19 seconds left in the third period on the powerplay after Sam Gagner took a questionable penalty of interference. It appeared that Gagner unintentionally collided with Coyotes’ veteran star Shane Doan, but the referees didn’t see it that way.
The Oilers then won it in overtime on a Nail Yakupov overtime winner on the powerplay after Antoine Vermette high-sticked Jordan Eberle.

The Edmonton Oilers have decided to take a chance on Ryan Smyth for two more seasons.
On Sunday, the opening day of NHL free agency, the Oilers re-signed Smyth to a two year deal worth $4.5 million. Smyth had 19 goals and 27 assists in 82 games this season.
Expect to see Smyth play more of a checking and leadership role for the Oilers, now that they have a ton of scoring up front. However I would still like to see him have significant minutes on the powerplay as he continues to be an intimidating presence in front of the net.
The Oilers also re-signed enforcer Darcy Hordichuk to a one year deal worth $850,000.
There were a few significant signings on Sunday as well. Ray Whitney signed a 2 year deal worth $9 million with Dallas from Phoenix. Whitney, a native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, recorded 77 points last season despite being 40 years of age.
The Edmonton Oilers didn’t seem to be the only Edmonton based hockey team to be a big winner from the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Two Edmonton Oil Kings were drafted in the first round.
Defenceman Griffin Reinhart, son of former Calgary Flame Paul Reinhart, was taken fourth overall by the New York Islanders and center Henrik Samuelsson, son of former Pittsburgh Penguin defenceman Ulf Samuelsson, was taken 27th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes.
Griffin Reinhart has another familial connection to the National Hockey League. His brother Max was drafted by the Calgary Flames two years ago.
This past season, Griffin Reinhart had 12 goals and 24 assists in 58 games, while Samuelsson had seven goals and 16 assists in 28 games.
Another Oil King to be drafted was left winger Mitch Moroz in the second round, 32nd overall, by the Edmonton Oilers. Moroz, a native of Calgary, had 131 penalty minutes in 66 games.
