Kris Letang (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)
The Pittsburgh Penguins had no problems scoring whatsoever in game four of the Eastern Conference semi-final against the Ottawa Senators Wednesday evening.
The Penguins score seven times past the two Senators goalies of Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner en route to a convincing 7-3 victory to take a 3-1 series lead.
Defenceman Kris Letang led the Penguins offensive attack with four assists. James Neal was a force with two goals on nine shots, and an assist. While Jarome Iginla, Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis also had multi-point games, with two points each.
The Senators meanwhile do not seem to have any confidence. Captain Daniel Alfredsson stated afterwards, he didn’t think the Senators would be able to put together three wins in a row and come back and win the series. He later stated his words were taken out of context. That backtrack however does not seem all that believable.

The Ottawa Senators got back into their Eastern Conference semi-final series with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday night from the nation’s capital.
Checking-line forward Colin Greening scored at 12:21 of double overtime as the Senators defeated the Penguins 2-1. Pittsburgh still lead the series 2-1. It was the longest game played so far in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs and the first to go to double overtime.
It was also a great comeback game for Senators goaltender Craig Anderson, who made 49 saves in between the Ottawa pipes.
In the other Eastern conference semi-final, the Boston Bruins defeated the New York Rangers 5-2 to take a 2-0 series lead. The Bruins were led offensively by Brad Marchand and Torey Krug, who each notched a goal and an assist, and by David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron who each notched two assists.

Sidney Crosby (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)
Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all-time. Heck, he is also the greatest athlete of all-time. But I think it is safe to say that right now Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins is the best hockey player in the world right now.
On Friday night, Crosby showed just why he is so great. In a dominating performance, Crosby had a hat trick by the early portion of the second period in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in game two of the Eastern Conference semi-final that put the Penguins up 2-0 in the best-out-of-seven series.
Crosby will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills north of the border this weekend as Pittsburgh travels to Ottawa for game three of the Eastern Conference semi-final (Sunday, CBC, 5:30 p.m.). I know the Penguins are loaded with talent that includes Evgeni Malkin and Jarome Iginla, but the bottom line is when healthy Pittsburgh is Crosby’s team.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching:
Saturday–MLB–New York Mets @ Chicago Cubs–WPIX–11:00 a.m.–Two teams in fourth place in their divisions play today at Wrigley Field. The Cubs are 17-24 in the National League Central, while the Mets are 16-23 in the National League East. First baseman Anthony Rizzo, who represented Italy at the World Baseball Classic, with nine home runs, 29 runs batted in and a .522 slugging percentage. While so far this season, the Mets have been led by third baseman David Wright, who leads the team with a .312 batting average, .418 on base percentage and a .536 slugging percentage.

Jonathan Quick (Wikimedia Commons)
The Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins have taken a 1-0 lead in the conference semi-finals after Tuesday.
Last night in Los Angeles, Jonathan Quick made 35 saves as the Kings defeated the San Jose Sharks to take a 1-0 series lead.
Slava Voynov and Mike Richards each notched a goal and an assist for the Kings.
The Penguins meanwhile got two points each from Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz in a 4-1 win over Ottawa.
It looks like Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma has made a firm decision to move forward with goaltender Tomas Vokoun over Marc-Andre Fleury.
Vokoun, who is now a perfect 3-0 in the postseason, made 35 saves on 36 shot attempts.

Brooks Orpik (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)
The New York Islanders deserve full marks for their team performance in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. They gave the heavily favoured Pittsburgh Penguins everything they could possibly handle and matured significantly as a franchise.
But at the end of the day it is the Penguins that have advanced to the Eastern Conference Semi-Final after Brooks Orpik scored the overtime winner to give Pittsburgh a 4-3 win over the Islanders in game six of the series.
Orpik’s goal was his first of his playoff career in a remarkable 77 games.
This was a game that the Islanders should have won. They outshot Pittsburgh 38-21 and dominated puck possession throughout the contest.
Defenceman Paul Martin also scored a key goal for the Penguins, his first of the 2013 postseason, with 5:16 left to tie the game at two.
The Penguins will now face the Ottawa Senators in the Eastern Conference Semi-Final. That series is likely to start midweek sometime.

Henrik Zetterberg (Dan Nicholas, Wikimedia Commons)
One of the most exciting times in the world of sports is simply game seven. That’s what we’ll have Sunday night in southern California as the Anaheim Ducks host the Detroit Red Wings.
Last night, Red Wings’ captain Henrik Zetterberg scored at 1:04 of overtime to give the Red Wings a 4-3 win over the Ducks to tie their Western Conference quarterfinal series at three games apiece.
The Red Wings might have a strong core of veterans, but after all these years are still getting it done. Goaltender Jimmy Howard is playing at an elite level as Detroit will look to move on during their last year in the Western Conference. How dangerous will Detrot be next year in the East? The answer is very. The game will be seen Sunday night on TSN at 8:00 p.m.
Here are the other events I’ll be watching this weekend:
Saturday & Sunday– PGA–Players Championship–NBC–12 p.m.– Spain’s Sergio Garcia, probably one of the best golfers in the world to have never won a major, currently leads Tiger Woods by a stroke after shooting a -11 at Sawgrass over the first two days of competition. Garcia and Woods have won the Players Championship once before– Woods in 2001 and Garcia in 2008. As for the first round leader, American Roberto Castro, he went from -9 to -3 and 1st to 30th after shooting a 78 on Friday.

Two more teams were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Finals on Thursday. Last night the Ottawa Senators sent the Montreal Canadiens home packing and the Chicago Blackhawks did the dame to the Minnesota Wild.
But the bottom line is these two series were not even close. The Senators trounced the Canadiens 6-1 last night to win the Eastern Conference quarterfinal 4-1. How dominant was Ottawa? Well they outscored Montreal 13-0 in the third period throughout the series.
The Blackhawks were equally as dominant against the Wild. Marian Hossa scored twice and registered three points in a 5-1 triumph as Chicago eliminated Minnesota in five games. The Blackhawks beat the Wild despite not getting a goal in the series from Jonathan Toews.

Tomas Vokoun (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)
The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a significant change leading up to game five in their series against the New York Islanders tonight.
After posting a goals against average of 4.26 and a save percentage of .863 in the last three games, Marc Andre Fleury has been pulled for experenced backup Tomas Vokoun.
Vokoun, was acquired by the Penguins from the Florida Panthers for a seventh round draft pick in June, and was brought to Pittsburgh for this purpose–to step up for the Penguins in case Fleury was as brutal in the playoffs as he was last year against Philadelphia.
If Vokoun gets hot, don’t be surprised if Dan Bylsma gives Vokoun the starting job the rest of the postseason. In 200 minutes of work against the Islanders this season, Vokoun only gave up three goals.
Now with all of the offensive firepower the Penguins have, it is a stretch to think that Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin will not win the Conn Smythe. However if Vokoun settles down the very important goaltending position in Pittsburgh for the rest of the playoffs, he might be part of the conversation.

Patrick Marleau (Ivan Makarov, Wikimedia Commons)
The first team has been knocked out from the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. On Tuesday evening, the third seeded Vancouver Canucks lost 4-3 to the San Jose Sharks when Patrick Marleau scored at 13:18 on the power play in overtime. San Jose won the Western Conference Quarterfinal 4-0.
The Sharks had the man advantage in the extra period because Daniel Sedin was given a two minute minor for boarding Sharks’ winger Tommy Wingels.
Joe Pavelski also came up big for the Sharks as he scored twice.
This is the very first time that the Sharks have swept an opponent in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Marleau meanwhile scored in every game in the series for the Sharks, who now have time to rest for the Western Conference Semi-Finals.
In other action, the Ottawa Senators got a big overtime goal from Kyle Turris to take a 3-1 series lead on the Montreal Canadiens with a 3-2 victory. The Senators were down 2-0 in the third period, before getting goals from Mike Zibanejad and Cory Conacher. Conacher’s goal came with 23 seconds left in the third period, while it appears that Zibanejad’s goal was kicked in.

Joe Pavelski (Ivan Makarov, Wikimedia Commons)
The Vancouver Canucks are now only one loss away from being eliminated from the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
On Sunday night in the Shark Tank, the Canucks got hammered 5-2 to San Jose, who now have a 3-0 lead on Vancouver in the series.
Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture scored twice for the Sharks against a Canucks team that is completely dysfunctional at the moment. Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider was horrible last night in giving up five goals to the Sharks.
In other action, the Montreal Canadiens/Ottawa Senators series is starting to be extremely physical. Last night there were 236 minutes in penalties, and many of the penalties the Canadiens took should be described as stupid. Ottawa meanwhile won convincingly 6-1 as rookie Jean Gabriel-Pageau recorded a hat trick.
In other games, the Pittsburgh Penguins took a 2-1 series lead over the New York Islanders as Chris Kunitz scored the overtime winner in a 5-4 Pittsburgh win. While in Minnesota, the Wild won their first of the series with a 3-2 win over Chicago on an overtime winner from Jason Zucker. Chicago still leads 2-1.

The 2013 World Men’s Hockey Championships will commence this weekend with Canada playing two games in Stockholm. The first will be against Denmark on Saturday (TSN, 8:00 a.m.) and the second will be against Switzerland on Sunday (TSN2, 8:00 a.m.).
There are four Oilers and one Flame on Team Canada. Jordan Eberle, Justin Schultz, Devan Dubnyk and Taylor Hall are the Oilers, while T.J. Brodie is the lone Calgary Flame.
Other notable players representing Team Canada are Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith, Carolina Hurricanes sniper Eric Staal, Florida Panthers defenceman Brian Campbell (defending Lady Byng winner) and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos, who was second in the NHL in scoring with 29 goals and 57 points. Pascal Dupuis (Michael Miller, Wikimedia Commons)
After night one was so strong with two overtime games, night two of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs were mostly yawners.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders are going to get their butt kicked over the next week. If they were in the West, they would have had a worse record than the Edmonton Oilers this season. Literally, the Bruins and Penguins are going to win their respective Eastern Conference quarterfinal series with complete ease.
The Penguins were dominant without Sidney Crosby and James Neal. When you’re getting outstanding offensive production from Pascal Dupuis (two goals), you know things are going really well. The Penguins won 5-0 last night, and the way they’re playing right now, they don’t need to rush Crosby back.

The 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs start this evening. It should be no secret. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks were by far the two best teams in the regular season. But does that mean they will be the two best playoff teams?
The answer this year is yes. The Blackhawks not only had 77 points in 48 games to lead the NHL, they also had a +53 in the for and against ratio. The Penguins meanwhile led the East with 72 points and were a +46. The second seeds of Montreal and Anaheim were well back in their respective conferences and will struggle immensely just to advance to round two.

Marian Gaborik (Wikimedia Commons)
So far there have been 15 NHL trades on trade deadline day, but none more were bigger than the trade between the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers.
On Wednesday, the Jackets acquired Marian Gaborik from the Rangers for forwards Derek Dorsett (an enforcer with offensive upside who is hurt right now but might be ready in time for the playoffs), Derrick Brassard, defenceman John Moore and a sixth round pick.
This trade is interesting primarily because the Blue Jackets and Rangers made a blockbuster deal that involved Rick Nash in the summer of 2012.
In other moves, the Penguins acquired shootout specialist Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks reacquired defenceman Scott Hannan from the Nashville Predators and Raffi Torres from the Phoenix Coyotes, the Minnesota Wild acquired Jason Pominville from the Mnnesota Wild, the Phoenix Coyotes also sent forward Steve Sullivan to the New Jersey Devils and Matthew Lombardi to the Anaheim Ducks, the St. Louis Blues sent Wade Redden to the Boston Bruins, and the Colorado Avalanche sent Ryan O’Byrne to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
