Random Friday Thoughts: NHL Conference Finals, Celebration (still) Sidelines Morales

Preview: NHL Conference Finals

Only four teams remain in this year’s battle for Lord Stanley’s mug as we get set for the Conference Finals to begin this weekend.

In the West, the San Jose Sharks will travel to Vancouver to face the Presidents’ Trophy winning Canucks on Sunday, after avoiding a complete meltdown on Thursday with a game seven win over the Red Wings. The Canucks had a much easier time with the Nashville Predators in round two, though it did still take six games for them to finish the job. This will be an interesting series because, as good as both of these clubs are, there are still question marks next to certain aspects of each team’s game. (After the jump: Who wins this series? Plus, a preview of Boston/Tampa Bay and a costly celebration continues to cost the LA Angels!) (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Tennessee Titans = Predators & Grizzlies

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Forget Vince Young – there are a couple of new Titans in Tennessee!

The NHL’s Nashville Predators and the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies aren’t quite “deep” into the playoffs in their respective leagues yet, but they’re both further than they’ve ever been before, simultaneously capturing the imagination of sports fans in the Volunteer state.

The Predators finally managed to shake their first-round jitters this season and win a playoff series, beating the Anaheim Ducks in six games about a week ago. Just five days later and a few hours down the road, the Memphis Grizzlies closed out their opening round series with the San Antonio Spurs, also in six games! Not only was it the first series win for the team that originated in Vancouver, it was also just the fourth time in NBA history that a number eight seed knocked off a number one!

Not a bad time to be a sports fan in Tennessee eh? (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: NHL Round Two Preview

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Eight teams remain in the race to sixteen wins as the NHL playoffs continue with second round action this week.

The opening round had a bit of everything – a sweep, four matchups that went the distance, blowouts, shutouts, overtime drama and a ton of suspensions as well as some other questionable conduct that went unpunished. Oh, and did I mention that a new champion will be crowned this spring?

Let’s get right to it with the Western Conference semifinals…(After the jump: Previews and Predictions!) (more…)

Around the Rinks: Game Seven(s), Roli is Clutch, Jumbo Joe

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Down to the Wire

Get ready for another big night of NHL playoff action on Tuesday!

A day after the Tampa Bay Lightning forced a game seven against the Penguins in Pittsburgh and the San Jose Sharks got a big goal from their captain in a series clinching win over the LA Kings, we’ve got a pair of Game Sevens to look forward to. First up, it’s the Sabres in Philly, followed by the Canucks looking to avoid a total collapse when they host the Blackhawks.

Also on Tuesday night: the Habs can take it the distance with a win over the Bruins, which would give us the most seven-game series’ since the 1995 playoffs!

So, who will join Detroit, Washington, Nashville and SJ in the second round? (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Jet Set?

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

If the Phoenix Coyotes have, in fact, played their last game in Glendale, Wednesday night’s loss was a fitting finale to what has been a nasty, yet productive couple of years in the desert.

It all started with the team going bankrupt back in 2009 and ending up as property of the NHL after a long, drawn-out battle in the courts. As potential deal after potential deal fell through for one reason or another, talk of relocation heated up and the distractions grew large for the team. Despite that, the Phoenix Coyotes won 93 games over those past two seasons and, at times, looked like one of the better clubs in the league.

Wednesday night was a fitting end though… (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: NHL Playoff Preview – Eastern Conference

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

The NHL’s second season gets underway on Wednesday as we get a glimpse of five of the eight first round matchups, including two from the Eastern Conference.

Earlier today I took you through each pairing in the West, from the Canucks to the Predators. Now, it’s the East’s turn!

Washington (48-23-11) vs. NY Rangers (44-33-5)

It was a tough season for the Washington Capitals, as their big three of Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Semin each saw dramatic drops in their offensive output and the team finished…wait, hold on a second. Those three each saw their point totals drop off big time and the Caps still finished first in the East and second overall? Oh boy, the Rangers have their work cut out for them! The Capitals committed to team defense this year and it paid off for them in a big way, but will it mean playoff success? New York might have something to say about that! It’ll be up to Henrik Lundqvist to hold off what is still a high-powered Capitals offence through the course of this series and give his team a chance to hopefully chip away at the inexperience of Washington goalies Semyon Varlamov and Michal Neuvirth. That inexperience between the pipes could be the Achilles heel of the Capitals. (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: NHL Playoff Preview – Western Conference

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Well folks, the NHL postseason is finally here: sixteen teams looking for sixteen wins and an opportunity to sip out of Lord Stanley’s famed mug.

The first round of the playoffs begins on Wednesday night and features some burning rivalries, new and old, and some others that are slowing inching toward “rivalry” status. Whatever the case, it won’t be long now until we see the captain of one of the sixteen remaining teams lifting the Stanley Cup proudly over his head…but who will it be?

Here’s a look, through my eyes, at the Western Conference pairings! (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Time to revisit Goal-Line Technology?

Friday, April 1st, 2011

If the Calgary Flames don’t make the playoffs this year, and it’s not looking like they will at the moment, there’s a good chance that fans will be looking back on the events of Wednesday night and cursing the NHL.

During the second period of what was then a one-goal game, the Flames appeared to make it 2-2 when Tim Jackman and Matt Stajan crashed the Anaheim crease and looked to have pushed the puck into the net. However, an inconclusive replay kept them from claiming that goal and they went on to lose 4-2, a big blow for their playoff hopes. Had the goal counted, they’ll say, who knows what might have happened in the final period and a half!

For a team that just barely misses the playoffs, there will always be a ton of “what if” moments, but was this one preventable? (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: SuperGore goes Beast Mode (and loses)

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

It’s a good thing Lucas Gore isn’t allergic to rubber, because he’s certainly seeing a lot of it these days.

The Chilliwack Bruins netminder has been left out to dry by his teammates more intensely than any other goalie in the league on a few occasions this season, but still has some pretty solid stats to his name. A prime example of that would be a March 16th shootout loss to the Spokane Chiefs where Gore made a whopping 77 saves, giving up just one goal!

No, you’re not seeing things – the kid made 77 stops in 65 minutes! If you’re wondering, and I’m sure you are, that appears to be a WHL regular season record (via Buzzing The Net).

Gore and the Bruins were back on the ice on Friday night for game one of their first round playoff series with the very same Spokane Chiefs, and guess what? He may very well have set a league record for saves in a playoff game! (more…)
