Torres suspended again in Stanley Cup Playoffs

Friday, May 17th, 2013

This is sounding like a broken record, but once again Raffi Torres of the San Jose Sharks has been suspended.

This time it is for the remainder of the Western Conference semi-finals for his hit to the head of Los Angeles’ Kings forward Jarret Stoll.

Torres received a two minute minor for the infraction in game one of the series, a series in which the Sharks currently find themselves down 2-0.

A major reason that Torres was suspended for a maximum of six games is because he is a repeat offender. Torres has been suspended three times in the past for 27 games.

Rangers/Blue Jackets blockbuster headlines NHL trade deadline day

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Marian Gaborik (Wikimedia Commons)

So far there have been 15 NHL trades on trade deadline day, but none more were bigger than the trade between the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers.

On Wednesday, the Jackets acquired Marian Gaborik from the Rangers for forwards Derek Dorsett (an enforcer with offensive upside who is hurt right now but might be ready in time for the playoffs), Derrick Brassard, defenceman John Moore and a sixth round pick.

This trade is interesting primarily because the Blue Jackets and Rangers made a blockbuster deal that involved Rick Nash in the summer of 2012.

In other moves, the Penguins acquired shootout specialist Jussi Jokinen from the Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks reacquired defenceman Scott Hannan from the Nashville Predators and Raffi Torres from the Phoenix Coyotes, the Minnesota Wild acquired Jason Pominville from the Mnnesota Wild, the Phoenix Coyotes also sent forward Steve Sullivan to the New Jersey Devils and Matthew Lombardi to the Anaheim Ducks, the St. Louis Blues sent Wade Redden to the Boston Bruins, and the Colorado Avalanche sent Ryan O’Byrne to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Coyotes shut out Flames 4-0

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Mike Smith (Matthew Cerasoli, Wikimedia Commons)

The Calgary Flames played like a team who were playing their second game of a back-to-back Monday night in Phoenix.

Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith made 30 saves and Raffi Torres and Antoine Vermette had a goal and an assist each as Phoenix defeated Calgary 4-0.

David Moss and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also had a multi-point game as they each had two assists. The Coyotes’ defencemen of Ekman-Larsson and Zbynek Michalek were each a +3 for the Coyotes according to www.tsn.ca.

Defenceman Keith Yandle scored the game winning goal for the Coyotes only 41 seconds into the hockey game.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan is still playing strong. At 36 years of age he caused havoc throughout the night and was making Flames’ goaltender Danny Taylor’s night uncomfortable. Taylor was making his first start in his NHL career.

Torres suspended 25 games– Was the suspension too much?

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

Raffi Torres (Wikimedia Commons)

We all knew Phoenix Coyotes’ agitator Raffi Torres would be suspended. But for 25 games? My initial reaction is and continues to be Wow!

But that was the case on Saturday as NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan completely threw the book at the former Oiler. Torres, who delivered a nasty hit on Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks in the early stages of game three of the Western Conference Quarterfinal on Tuesday night, received the second longest suspension in NHL history. Hossa, meanwhile needed to be carried off on a stretcher and hasn’t played since the incident took place.

Torres, who amazingly, didn’t receive a penalty on the play by referees Ian Walsh and Stephen Walkom, is a repeat NHL offender. He has been suspended twice before in his career for incidents. Torres also delivered the hit at a time when the NHL is being scrutinized by the media for the dirty level of play by an influx of players who have participated to date in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

It will also be interesting to see if Walsh and Walkom get second round assignments after their own negligence in missing the call.

Was the suspension fair? Let us know what you think.

Weekend Sports Preview–June 4-5–French Open, Stanley Cup Finals, NBA Finals, MLB, Memorial

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Daniel Nestor (Wikimedia Commons)

One of the most underrated athletes in Canadian sports history will be going for his tenth grand slam title in tennis tomorrow.

Toronto’s Daniel Nestor hasn’t won a singles’ grand slam title, but has won multiple times in men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Let’s not forget as well a Gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia with Sebastien Lareau.

Nestor and Max Mirnyi of Belarus, the second seeds in the men’s doubles competition at the French Open, will be taking on the unseeded pair of Juan Sebastian Cabal of Colombia and Eduardo Schwank of Argentina. Cabal and Schwank cannot be taken lightly however as they  recently defeated Mike and Bob Bryan, the number one seeds in the world, in the semi-finals.

The match can be seen on TSN at approximately 9am Mountain time tomorrow morning, following the women’s singles final.

Here are the other events I’ll be watching:

Canucks win Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Raffi Torres (Bing Images)

If the Vancouver Canucks are going to win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, they’re going to have to do it with strong goaltending, impressive special teams and timely scoring.

They got all of that in game one of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight.

Former Edmonton Oiler Raffi Torres scored with nineteen seconds left in the third period from Ryan Kesler and Jannik Hansen as the Canucks won Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals over the Boston Bruins 1-0.

Canuck goaltender Roberto Luongo made 36 saves for his third shutout of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Canucks win opener in Western Conference Final

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

Henrik Sedin (Jeff Gross, Getty Images)

A buddy of mine told me last week that the San Jose Sharks would easily beat the Vancouver Canucks and the only reason why the Canucks have home ice advantage in the Western Conference Final was because Vancouver plays in the much easier Northwest Division.

I wasn’t so sure. The Canucks haven’t played up to their expectations yet. Granted. But, the bottom line is they are still in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and have the best opportunity in franchise history to win the Stanley Cup.

Suspendable Offence?

The same week he called his job “thankless,” Colin Campbell is out with another head-scratcher!

The NHL’s head disciplinarian went off on TSN Radio about how he feels a bit disrespected by all of the criticism he is facing, especially now that we’re into the playoffs. I can kind of see why he’d be rattled because he has definitely been active in punishing players who break the rules lately, handing out five suspensions in the last week and a half or so. That said, I think we’re all a bit miffed about a few of his calls so far.

Case and point: the Raffi Torres hit on Brent Seabrook…(After the jump: The latest NHL suspension, Real Madrid puts their mark on the Spanish Cup & MORE!) (more…)
