Happy Monday!

This week on the show we start out with the topic that’s on everyone’s mind – the feud between the Pittsburgh Penguins & the Philadelphia Flyers (and to a lesser extent, the Pens & the Rangers). We also look at a couple of fines handed down to coaches this week (including Edmonton’s Tom Renney) and we run down the upcoming match-ups in the first round of the NHL playoffs.

In the GABBYs: Mike Smith, Ray Whitney, Joey Votto, Alistair Overeem, the Orlando Magic & fans of the University of Kentucky. The Punchline this week is the Baltimore Orioles!

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Goals of the Week!

Thursday, March 1st, 2012

Another week has come and gone in the National Hockey League, which means it’s time for another look at the top goals from around the rinks!

This time on the GOTW, Lightning strikes against the Ducks, a captain comes up big in overtime, a grizzled veteran shows off some silky hands, a Senator undresses a Capital and a Penguin undresses an entire team!

Let’s go!

5. Teddy Purcell

This beauty goal from the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Teddy Purcell (starts at the 1:30 mark) begins with a nifty toe drag and ends with a backhander to the top shelf – what a beauty!

(Check out the REST OF THE BEST after the jump!) (more…)

Happy New Year!

It was 2011 the last time we spoke and much has happened since then! This week on the show we recap the best and worst moments of the year from the world of sports, we talk about Sean Avery getting waived ahead of the Winter Classic, plus we recap the big game. Also: we’ve got a theory about the success of Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators and we look at the main event at UFC 141 and tell you which fighter retired after losing.

In the GABBYs: The Green Bay Packers, The NLL’s Philadelphia Wings, Petr Mrazek, Tim Tebow, Yorvit Torrealba and the NHL All-Star voting process. The Punchline this week is basketball player Manny Harris and his strange injury!

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Over-Celebrating?

Friday, December 9th, 2011

It seems like over-celebrating has been all the rage in the world of sports over the past few months, and that trend continued on Thursday night in the NHL!

From “Tebowing” and “The Burris” in the NFL, to Arron Asham’s controversial “Go to Sleep” move earlier this season, it seems like guys just keep on finding new ways to express themselves out there. Well, you can add New York Rangers “sniper” Artem Anisimov to that list!

Things got ugly at MSG after Anisimov scored a beautiful shorthanded goal to put his club up 2-1 over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning. As he skated away from the net, Anisimov morphed into a Teemu Selanne/Tim Tebow hybrid, flipping his stick around, dropping to one knee and pretending to “shoot” Bolts goalie Mathieu Garon! (VIDEO after the jump!) (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: Goals of the Week!

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

The NHL is finally back, and what an opening week it was!

Sure, it’s too early in the season to get a good read on how your team is going to do and who is going to run away with all of the individual awards, but at least we can now sit back and watch the multitude of early season dangles!

Throughout the year, I’ll be counting down the top five goals each week ending each Sunday. I’ll also be trying to track down the “What the Puck” moment of each and every week of the NHL season, which you’ll find after the number one gino.

Here we go!

5. Jiri Hudler

Detroit Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler gets us started this week, taking a nice feed from Pavel Datsyuk before making a deposit into the bank of shelf with a sick backhander! If I had to caption Craig Anderson’s post-goal response, it would probably read: C’mon Man! VIDEO AFTER THE JUMP! (more…)

Kerrzy’s Notebook: C is for Captain

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

It’s one of the greatest honors you can be given in a team sport, and two more NHL players are now part of that club.

The NY Rangers announced on Monday that 26-year-old winger Ryan Callahan will wear the “C” this season, becoming the 26th player in team history to hold that honor. Last Friday, the St. Louis Blues named power forward David Backes the franchise’s 22nd captain since 1967.

Callahan and Backes join a pretty solid list of players who have captained either the Rangers or Blues, from Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky, to Brian Leetch and Al MacInnis. With that extra bit of fabric on your shirt comes a lot of responsibility in the dressing room and on the ice, but I’m sure both players are up to the challenge – it’s not something that coaches give out just for the sake of having a captain.

Just ask the NJ Devils, the Buffalo Sabres, the Florida Panthers and the Colorado Avalanche… (more…)

After the recent deaths of two NHL tough guys, is it time to think about taking fighting out of hockey? Also: Sidney Crosby isn’t ready to go yet, Chris Drury hangs ‘em up and The Hockey News predicts a last place finish for the Oilers (do you agree?).

In the GABBYs: Jim Thome, Dan Uggla, the Texas Rangers, El Clasico, Desmond Bishop and Terrelle Pryor!

It’s Monday, and that means a new episode of 15 Minutes of Fame.
This week, our heroes discuss the Edmonton Eskimos and their big win over the BC Lions and what this means for their still-alive playoff hopes.

They also discuss Gilbert Arenas of the NBA’s Washington Wizards and his fake-injury-turning-into-a-real-injury saga.

The Oilers are also on tap this week as usual – will the backup goaltenders ever play? Find out.

Lastly, watch Jim well up with tears as we say a fond farewell to the Commonwealth Games in Dehli, India.
